And now for something completely different...

With current national restrictions having prevented me from doing any work on the real 37003 for quite some time, I decided to scratch the itch by working on a miniature version instead!

I've had one of the Groups limited edition models of 37003 since release a decade ago (and in typing that I suddenly feel older!) but in that time I've not really done much with it aside from fitting the rollerblind headcodes supplied with the model.

With three other Bachmann 37s to work on (501/502 need nameplates and pipework whilst 116 needs pipework) I decided now was the time to do something with 003. After an hours running session to check the model still worked I set about deciding on what detailing I required:

- The NEM couplings would need replacing by less obtrusive wire loops.
- Bachmann only supply an oversized air pipe, so new pipes would need to be sourced/made and potentially new holes would need to be drilled to fit them.

I found a suitable source photo to work from:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/rgadsdon/6219560335/

Interestingly, in 1974 the loco was still fitted with a steam heat pipe despite having lost its boiler circa 1967, but this was gone by the time of the photo I would be working from in 1976. As the loco was not yet fitted with air pipes, the loco would need to be modelled in vac only condition, with the hole supplied by Bachmann needing to be "capped off".

Additionally, the horizontal pipework picked out in white in the photo posed an interesting challenge and so this was added to my to do list.

A wire coupling loop was designed to be drilled into the bufferbeam but to sit behind the cowling to hide the join.

The air pipe hole was capped off using cuts from a thin plastic rod, pushed into place and painted black.

New bufferbeam pipework was cut and shaped from lengths of thin wire, with a bent attachment point on the end to superglue it behind the bufferbeam and allow it the hang forward under the cowling.

The additional pipework underneath the bufferbeam was made by cutting lengths of wire to 22mm, bending the ends to hook into the long redundant snowplough fixing points on the bogies (a relic of an older tooling) and suitably curving these to sit over the NEM socket (the bottom one of the three curving more than the top one).

The vac pipe is, ironically, the air pipe supplied with the model, as it is the correct shape and thickness for a vac pipe. It only lacks the ribbed effect but this is not noticeable unless you break social distancing by getting up close and personal with the front end of the model!

With all these pipes painted and fitted, the final job was the fit the frost grilles which are quite honestly a pain to fit! I used an acrylic varnish to fix these in place but found that slight discrepancies in the shape of the etches meant one corner would lift away and that trying to persuade all for sides to remain flush to the bodyside is actually quite a task!

That said, I'm pleased with the end result, although I cannot say it is completely finished as I've since ordered some EE works plates for the cabsides! I also have some whitemetal steam heat pipes so if I wish to backdate the model further in future, I can still do so.

Here are a few photos to hopefully show these mods to good effect. Feel free to comment below or to show off your own 37 related modelling efforts!

Nice work, the Bachmann bufferbeam detail and pipes is an excretable work of fiction and always has been.

I’m done hacking them about though, I’ll wait for accurascale

Blue is the theme this week with our latest intake of stock from Bachmann, expected imminently. We have yet more DRS 20/3's on offer, as well as a Class 150 DMU for those so inclined and some rather tasty LMS coaches in BR Blue/Grey for those who take a fascination in that remarkable crossover period of the late 60's and early 70's.
