Rugd1022
Excellent information, special thanks to Mark Alden for the detailed accounts of movements in the last week the 43's were in traffic & love the comment "I just hope I don't get to read this later in book by a dodgy journalist from Peterborough as 'an exclusive revelation'...." - Still looking for last date in traffic for D833/D844 & D852 if anyone could help? 833 - stopped on 22/9/71 after A engine failed, hauled from Reading to Newton Abbot on 25/9/71, then withdrawn, official w/d date 3/10/71. 844 - last working not known but withdrawn on 4/10/71, travelled from Marsh Junction to Worcester under its own power in late October to perform carriage heating duties, returned light engine to Swindon for scrapping on 26/11/71. 852 - stopped on 11/9/71, thought to be at Bristol Bath Road, to store and withdrawn 3/10/71. Spartan was seen on 23 8 71 between Southall and Paddington Last sighting of Tenacious, apart from Swindon scrapyard, was on 29 7 71 at Ealing Broadway. When looking back at these notes I thought "why didn't I have a top-quality cine camera and a decent SLR with several lenses at the time.." then I remembered,I was only 12... Rugd1022
Worth posting, certainly Brian! 844 at Lydney... it's one of those lines on the Western which is almost overlooked compared to the rest of the region, I've not seen many photos of Warships on this route (or on the Swindon - Gloucester line either). September, 1971 and we were on the 07:05 Cardiff - Gloucester, Swindon Cross Country, heading for Crewe Works Open Day. Normally we'd go on the 05:38 Cardiff - Crewe via the North & West, another Swindon Cross Country. Don't know why we chose the route via Brum ? . D860 VICTORIOUS
Fascinating stuff Brian.Vanquisher was pretty close to withdrawal when you saw her. Me and my mates went to Swindon Works and Marsh Junction on 12 3 72.An unforgettable day, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons... Neil
