Good morning!

post-9147-0-72506600-1493927623_thumb.jpg

Saturday's plan was to take the train down to Bellinzona in the morning for the Saturday market there. As you can see from the above picture we had superb weather for it (to the point that I got sunburnt because Mrs SG didn't want me to bring my big Aussie hat). The route was Voralpen Express from Luzern to Arth- Goldau on the Sud Ost Bahn, then an SBB express from there through the Gotthard Base tunnel to Bellinzona. We got to Luzern HBf early so more pictures and video were taken before leaving as there were some simultaneous departures and coach shunting going on.

The Voralpen Express was quite empty and pleasant, I tried to get a picture of one heading in the opposite direction, but a catenary mast put in an appearance at the wrong time. The SBB Express through the Base tunnel was a standard RE460 on a single deck push/pull set, with extra coaches added. No pictures of this as the train was so full that me and Mrs SG couldn't even get seats together. The route under the alps was clearly very popular and efficient, but it definitely lacked the character and soul of the old route over the top.

After wandering around Bellinzona town and castles for a bit, we headed back to the station and had some time to kill waiting for our return train. Plenty of passing freight and a lot of stopping passenger trains (6 car Flirts around those parts).

Our return train was the 'Gotthard Weekender' which is a tourist train that still heads along the line over the top. For me this was the highlight and best decision of the holiday that I would thoroughly recommend to others. The train arrived as a single RE420 (formerly RE4/4ii) hauling 3x 1st class panoramic coaches, 3x older 2nd class coaches with opening windows, and a baggage van. We went to the rear cattle class coach, and were the only ones in it. We left with a pair of RE420s and the head of the train, they had no issues with such a light load heading up the south ramp to Airolo. The tunnel at the top was longer than I expected, and we emerged at Goschenen into snow!

We travelled up the North ramp on our trip to Filisur last year before the base tunnel opened, it was a constant procession of trains heading over the top. This time, it was eerie how empty it was, only passing 1 Flirt heading in the opposite direction.

We got off the train at Rotkruez to catch an SBB IR service back to Luzern. An interesting sized junction in the middle of nowhere, but I caught an RE10/10 passing through that we'd passed when we left Bellinzona. So passengers have sped up through the tunnel but freight is still taking the same time!

Rotkruez!

There's still some green coaches around but definitely not as many getting added to trains as there was last year. I even got a glimpse of an old green lightweight coach with comfort stripe on our way back to Luzern!

I spent an hour at Goschenen last week and only saw the panoramic train and the hourly locals, pretty much everything else seems to use the tunnel now, which spoils one of the worlds great days trainspotting, somewhere on the Wassen curves.

The Gotthard NEAT (Base Tunnel) is equipped for 200kph for stock so equipped. Freights are still limited to 80 kph, due to their make-up: the freight cars are often not allowed speeds over 80 kph. Little known fact: as the new tunnel is equipped with ERTMS Level 2, and only trains so equipped are allowed through, should a freight get stuck inside the 57km of tunnel and have to back up, it's allowed to do so at 80 kph (!!) :O

(I know, had the dice rolled a little differently back in 2015, I'd now be a driver in Switzerland using the new Gotthard tunnel extensively :P ) :(

Do you know why the south junction for the tunnel is a flat double junction, but the north at Erstfeld is a flying junction? that's confused me a little and I can't see the point in just one of them being flying.

The original plan was to got to the transport museum and chocolate experience in the morning, and if there was time we'd go up Rigi in the afternoon. The weather was so clear and hot again though that we decided to go straight to Rigi just incase the weather came in in the afternoon.

Luzern to Arth-Goldau was an SBB Interregio, single deck push/pull with an RE460 on the rear. The 460 is Seen here with a Voralpen express Lok 2000 heading towards Luzern at Arth.

Rigi Kulm and the top of the Rigi Bahn where the Arth-Goldau route and the Vitznau route meet. Blue trains to Arth, Red trains down to Vitznau on Lake Luzern:

Mrs SG scored a winner on the route down by realising there was a pair of seats at the front of the train next to the driver so we had a lot more space than the rest of the tourists crammed in :)

At Vitznau there was a quick change onto one of the lake boats to the Transport Museum (Intergrated transport working at it's finest), and both Rigi and the boat was covered by our travel pass, so other than a hot chocolate at the summit the trip didn't cost any extra.

The Travel pass gave 50% discount into the Transport Museum, getting Museum tickets also gave us discount into the Chocolate experience ride at the same location so that kept Mrs SG happy.

Musuem was good as all the reports, the new Gotthard HO model was impressive. All the standard Crocodile photos of course, and the look inside an old RhB GE2/4 at it's motor was interesting. And Mrs SG not behaving...... I was very pleased to see a former LSE railcar in the museum, brought back memories of skiing holidays when I was younger, even if it was in the wrong livery. Plus another Globi carriage! (I really want a pair of his trousers). The model of a Titlis cable car at 1/20 scale was full of bad ideas for me...

Usually happens when posting on the iPhone as it automatically puts thecwidest side across!

Were they taken on the phone? If so I usually find Saving the posted image and turning it on the PC and resaving them as a file with B or similar added sorts it out.

There must be some hidden code in the way the phone decides which way up it was attached to the pic at a guess.

Trip home. Our flight from Zurich wasn't until the evening so we'd planned to head up to Rhine Falls, but the weather was rubbish. So instead we took the scenic route, ZB to Interlaken over the old Brunig Bahn route, then an SBB Intercity for Interlaken to Bern, and Bern to Zurich Airport.

I hadn't really planned on taking anymore pictures at Luzern while we were waiting to leave, but Mrs SG noticed a freight arriving, and it used a platform, RE420 lead it in, RE10/10 formation taking it out again. So there's that, some more Voralpen Express, and Luzern - Engelberg Express.

At Interlaken, everyone else that filled the ZB train to almost standing room only headed for the BOB towards Grindlewald. I can't help but think that they need more seats on the Brunig Bahn route, all the units I saw using it were very full, and switching to fixed formation multiple units has made adding more space (extra coaches) a bit difficult.

Interlaken. Some BOB, our RE460 that took us to Bern, and we chose to have lunch on the train in the restaurant coach which was a very good choice! I scored good points with Mrs SG for this, dining in a smooth comfortable empty coach around the edge of a lake with at table service.

Bern to Zurich IC was different to trains through the alps that we'd got used to. RE460 hauled again, double deck stock with a few extra single deck at the back. We jumped into an almost empty single deck coach, and got a non-stop 200kmh run all the way to Zurich, overtaking a couple of DB ICE units and a TGV along the way. No pictures from this, I was just enjoying the scenery. Reaching the outskirts of Zurich started revealing things like the pair of RE420s at each end of a double deck set, a glimpse of a 'light weight' coach still in dark green with comfort stripe, and a couple of the old blue/grey/yellow local service coaches still floating about, at least 1 was a driving coach with a red end.

That's it until next holiday.

Unfortunately, it's standard Digital camera, and a windows laptop. The only difference to other times I've turned pictures from this camera is it's now windows 10. I'll get on google and look into it like Dutch Master mentions.

You need to store/save them 'right-way up'. The 'hidden code' Paul mentions is nothing mysterious, it's known as EXIF data. Google it, very revealing ;)

Anyway, the Mrs was absolutely 'a very naughty gal' there :nono:  The RhB Ge2/4 207 was state of the art in 1913 (!!) when it first arrived. Electric motors have most definitely evolved since then

(FYI: the Ge 2/4 series was build in 1912 (201-202) and 1913 (203-207) and entered service in numerical order between 27-12-1912 and 23-6-1913 on the Engadin line, which was the first RhB line to be electric from new. The DC lines to Arosa (open 1914) and Bernina (open 1908) where separate companies. The 2nd RhB line to be electric from new was the Vereina tunnel, 1999 :P  Loco 207 is part of the VHS collection since 1982)

Croc 402 was build 1921 as part of the first series 401-406, with follow-up orders in 1922 (407-410), 1925 (411+412) and finally 1929 (413-415), primarily for the Albula route (Chur-St. Moritz/Samedan) and entered the VHS in 1985.

The Lok2000 project was a study by SBB for a modern loco with semi-conductor technology, which resulted in the SBB Re460 and BLS Re465 designs from SLM. With only 4 loco's in this series (designated Re 4/4 IV ) it was essentially a maintenance nightmare for SBB workshops, as the required storage of parts took a lot of space. As it happened, the SOB had tagged on with the SBB in an earlier order for the Re 4/4 III, with 4 loco's. Being smart, once the project was concluded (and the Re460 was being build) both parties realised the mutual benefit of a swap, SBB sold their Re 4/4 IV's to the SOB in return for their Re 4/4 III's very quickly. SBB happy, as they got rid of an expensive proto-series in return for an equally useful set as part of a larger series, thus lower costs, SOB was happy as they got newer and more modern loco's that also are more energy efficient too. :imsohappy:

Thus concludes the lesson for today :)

:punish:

:bye:

Very informative. I think then in this one short holday I've managed to get pictures of an entire class of locomotive :) (there's definitely 4 different livery Lok 2000s there)

Well our next organised visit isn't in the snow, and we're back at Hotel Grischuna in Filisur!

Flight into Zurich as before, SBB to Zurich HB, then an SBB IC service to Graubunden. We just happened to get into an SBB ex EC coach, which is possibly the smoothest and quietest train we've ever been on (Mrs SG fell asleep very quickly!). Also surprised to see a set of push/pull coaches still in the old NPZ style grey/blue with yellow doors as we left Sargans :)

Rather than a direct Chur - Filisur, we decided to pad out the time and see/sleep through some scenery, so we got off thd SBB at Landquart and took a RhB to St Moritz via the Verina tunnel to have a look in the Engadin Valley. We got off that at Samedan to get in a shiny new Albula Coach down to Filisur. We ended up in the coach with the children's slide. She wouldn't let me have a go on it :(

Moving on the RhB, lost count of how many Ge4/4ii and Ge4/4iii we saw, Krokodil no. 415 passed through Landquart light engine, seen at least 3 of the Ge6/6ii, a Ge4/4i arrived on freight at Samedan, and a Gem4/4 left Samedan on it's way back to the Bernina. Camera wasn't always to hand but it was a good day of accidental spotting!

Various movements at Landquart:

Driving trailers for the new Albula sets. There were 2nd class versions too but the picture failed :(

Our train from Landquart to Samedan had the LGB advertising Ge4/4ii on front, and was a very LGBesq train consisting of just 4 standard coaches!

post-9147-0-36773100-1531575276_thumb.jpg

And back to the good view over Filisur station :)

post-9147-0-87175400-1531575250_thumb.jpg

The new coach sets seem to cover most of the Albula services now, either Allegra or Ge4/4iii hauled, there's even 1 set running with it's driving trailer. To me, the Ge4/4iii on the new coaches looks very good, but the Allegra's are still leaving me a bit cold, especially as the driving trailer has been designed to match them. That said, the sight of a 3 vehicle railcard hauling 6 Albula coaches + 6 Glacier Express coaches (15 vehicles total) up the Albula is very impressive! There is also 1 Albula service still being covered with older loco hauled stock, as well as hauled stock boosting the numbers on the new sets during peak times. The difference in noise coming from old stock compared to new is very noticeable!

Apart from the occasional Crocodile, the Filisur - Davos turn is covered by old rail cars or more commonly a Ge4/4iii on a 4 coach push/pull with very impressive acceleration :)

Finally a video at 2100 after dinner, I wasn't expecting that on a St Moritz - Chur turn!

We went to Davos. Historic train behind a Krokodil :) We may have missed the point of Davos though, other than world leader summits, a Casino (No thank you), and skiing, what does Davos do?! Also, the weather was cold and drizzly so we headed back to the sun at Filisur quite quickly to relax for the rest of the day :)

Quick RhB operations question; we see the freight coming down from Samedan each evening, but never see any freight going up. What time does it head up? Or is it doing a large loop of the system each day through the Verina tunnel?

If you can access it, there is the Grafischer Fahrplan for the Albula line at

I think the 5xxx numbers are freights.

... We may have missed the point of Davos though...

Same experience here - I stopped off there on the way back to Chur once (at the Davos station where the Filusur shuttle terminates) with the idea of getting some food and it seemed very concrete and mostly closed. Ended up with a Currywurst from a fairground that was just opening up, then hopped on the next train. I suspect the outlying villagey bits are nicer than the ski resort centre.

Sunday. We went to Chur in the morning, it was closed. So then we went to the designer outlet village in Landquart for lunch and shopping.

RhB trains around Chur in the morning:

A couple of movements at Chur, plus there's still some 2nd class RIC coaches in green livery!

The less conventional reverse-Landwasser view on the way back to Filisur ;)

An interesting afternoon/evening of movements at Filisur (for a Sunday!) Ge4/4i on a special with a very mish-mash selection of coaches including a Pullman and a Bernina 4 wheel historic coach. Standard GEX shot! Plus my favourite video of the trip which highlights how 'standardizing' the Albula sets isn't going to ruin it for enthusiasts; the Chur - St Moritz Ge4/4iii hauled with an extra coach, the St Moritz - Chur with a new driving cab leading, Allegra pushing, plus another booster coach! And the Krokodil running around the Davos service:

Monday. Woke up very early... I may have forgotten to turn off my work alarm...

Not one to miss an opportunity though, left Mrs SG asleep and went outside to read my book, just as the first train to Chur came through before 0600. Another very modellable Ge4/4ii on 4 coaches:

The first Chur - Samedan 'passenger' train of the day, 2nd class only! (Yes that is a public scheduled passenger service, it was on the timetable)

Cloud came in, a works train turned up. These guys were doing something along the dynamic loop towards the Landwasser all day, and were back at it Tuesday when we left to come home, but had to come back up to the station sidings every hour when the 'rush' happens:

Last full day on our second trip to Filisur and I finally see a freight heading up towards Samedan :) pauses to let a Light Engine Ge6/6ii back down the line:

post-9147-0-43452500-1531897650_thumb.jpg

The original plan for the day was to head to Tirano for Pizza and Ice Cream, but Mrs SG decided she'd like a look around Chur while it was open. So instead we decided to go up to Arosa for a drink and stop in Chur on the way back.

Lots of good scenery on the way up to Arosa, all Allegra run ( :( ) no pictures, but there was quite a lot of tail end freight heading up the mountain.

Leaving Chur, some more still green RIC 2nd class coaches:

Back in Filisur for the afternoon. Workmen head back up the valley, plus standard gratuitous GEX picture:

The 1600 rush. Allegra leading the driving cab of an Albula set?...

...I guess the old Gourmino dining coaches aren't push pull fitted then!

Mrs SG napping again so went out for a walk. GEX from the rear:

1700 rush with the last Davos Krokodil of our holiday:

A little further around, the end of the Dynamic loop before the Landwasser tunnel, the view from above the viaduct, and above the less photo'd end of the tunnel. BEX to Davos arrives in the distance:

Headed home. No pictures, but RhB to Chur, SBB to Zurich. All very smooth as expected by now, one little last treat from the SBB window as we approached Landquart was seeing an RhB Ge4/4i being used on a freight heading towards Chur :)

That's all until next time...

Thanks very much for posting these; looks as though you had a wonderful holiday!  I'm off to Davos for a week's holiday next month and look forward to seeing some of the sights you've entertained us with on here.  I'm staying at the same hotel that I stayed at last year, and have to say I found Davos a good place to stay - although maybe somewhat soulless in the town centre, it's well served by funiculars and cable cars as well as the RhB and buses allowing you to get out and about for some lovely mountain walks.  The cost of these is included in the holiday package, as it includes a "Davos Card" giving unlimited travel on the RhB between Filisur and Klosters, and all the above mentioned public transport modes.  Last year we ended up in the station cafe at Filisur almost every afternoon!

Davos / Davos-Platz is alright. I last went there in October 2006 for a day; surprisingly quiet and no sign of snow at the time. Only one small reasonably-priced café was open; the restaurants looked expensive!! Walked round the town; camera was very short of battery power so I wasn't able to take half the photos I wanted to.

Chur was much busier, to the point of being frantic on a Friday / Saturday, round about 4pm. The best place to see the Swiss get really frantic is the local branch of MIGROS just before closing time.

I think things are very seasonal in places like Davos in Switzerland, around the skiing season and to a slightly lesser extent summer holidaymakers; October is neither one nor the other!  Cheaper eating out is usually available at the cafes in Co op shops.
