Jon Fitness' average 7mm signals workbench.

Recommended Posts

Here's the first four signals for 2020. All are LMS upper quadrants and use Scale Signal Supply arms and post caps, Modelu lamp cases and some of my own etches and castings. (Ladders, bolting plates, weight bars, smoke deflector and No5 bracket). The lattice post is an extended MSE super7 etch. All are LED lit and servo operated.

A rare burst of sunshine provided some nice natural lighting (it was raining 5 minutes later:blink:)

Here are 2 out of a batch of 4 SR ground signals recently completed. They are all from the MSE kit but with my own etched nickel silver disc faces. They are all LED lit and servo operated.

Very nice , it’s makes me up my game in my own 7mm signals every time I see your work

I would have been under the impression the landing boards would have been a dark colour , as opposed to a nearly “ new” timber colour  ??

I think the boards get bleached in the sun but get a bit green in the damp. They'll change as the weather changes...

Yes. I Have wondered how best to represent them.

The boards are .8mm ply strips. I stained them with a thinned wash of my usual humbrol 33/62 mix. This then had a hint of Matt green drybrushed sparingly over it.

They look beautiful Jon but how many Southern yellow arm ground discs came as half discs as opposed to the (very) miniature semaphore arm style ?    I can't readily recall seeing any as half discs (possibly once, not sure) so I suspect it was probably a later development and the miniture are style definitely lasted a long tme - into the 1980s if not a little later I would say.

Good point. I'll have to investigate that. Maybe, as you suggest, it was a later BR development. It's one of those things where I'm sure I've seen a picture of it but if I go off and look, it simply won't be there...

Certainly in the instances with which I am familiar most were installed in the 1930s onwards with the miniature arm and I suspect that the black half-disc examples were either BR-era replacements for old arms or BR-era examples of new signals.

There is one on the Mid Hants but it is serving in a rather different role so hasn't got the original colouring of yellow arm with black vertical stripe.

Jon,

Those Ground Signals are the bees knees.

A couple of shots I took at Swanage a year or three ago....

Steve.

Ah, thanks for that Steve. Good enough for me:good_mini:

I posted 4 views, iirc somewhere on here, of the above signal. I've spent an hour or so in searching through my thousands of photos, and can't locate it. My photos were indexed via picassa, but not any more

Looks very thoroughly restored.

It does indeed but accurately so from what can be seen in that view.  It is exactly the same basic signal as the half disc versions with the only difference being the colour of the light when on and a miniature semaphore arm bolted on instead of a half disc.   Look at the various photos and you can see the bolt heads in the same position in exactly the same position for the two different 'arms'

Interestingly S&B made '4mm' scale cast metal working models of both types back in the 1950s but they were probably nearer 7 mm scale than 4mm - lovely t little things and they worked with (near invisible) springing to hold them in the 'on' position.  Beautiful little models but I haven't seen one for many years despite coming across various S&B items at auction sales.

Strange you should mention those. Think I still have one, see if I can find it.

There is now an elevated 'not yet in use' red version of this signal at MSN (shunt 23), but I can't find any recent photograph of it in my files - maybe somewhere local there can help?

The only one I have got a pic of is a similarly modified one on the Mid Hants.

I notice the back blinders on these signals are painted white. I always assumed they were black but some photos of prototype signals I've looked at recently also show white ones. Any idea whether white was always used or could they be either colour.
