Re: D6321, the latest photo I have without headcode boxes is dated June 1965. The earliest with headcode boxes is February 1967.

Re: D6322, it would seem that no members of the class that had their headcode boxes retro-fitted while in green livery were repainted to either of the first two styles of blue. Or to put it the other way around D6302/03/14/18/22/25/27/28/32 didn’t have headcode boxes while in green livery.

The work on D6322 itself was carried out during April/May 1967 following collision damage at one end. The “new end” is subtly non-standard.

So would D6322 have received the blue livery at the same time as getting the collision damage repaired and the non-standard headcode boxes?

No, I don’t have a date for when it received the yellow panel while in green, but probably during one of its works visits between 1962-1964. It then remained in this condition until its collision damage repair in ‘67 at which point it gained headcode boxes and BR blue with full yellow ends

There are photographs of D6332 on the Taunton-Barnstaple line in Summer 1965, without either SYP or head code boxes. The latest of these has a date of 4/9/65 (there are earlier photos, in June and August). It was also captured on Video/DVD in this condition - Changing trains v2 (Chapt 7, at 31.15-32.30).

Just had a look at stock quantities at various outlets online some variants have sold out as an example hattons seem to be down to 2 variants at the special price. They seem to be flying off the shelves so I helped myself to another!

Thought would mention in case anyone is considering one.

Thanks, but its D6321 and D6322 that I am interested in. D6332 is in Blue with Full yellow End from Dapol, and it received that in March 67, so a bit late for my period.

Side mention, but DCC supplies have bodies for £19.

they aren’t decorated, the rest of the fittings costing around another £10.

However it could be worthwhile if you want to back fill with some different numbered variations to grab one of those bodies, and a discounted one, and swap the bits, even if you dispose of the unwanted body, your still coming in with a cheap one.

Having just acquired a Dapol Class 22, and very nice it is too as D6325 in green with headcode discs and no yellow panel, I am curious to know how you work out which is No 1 and No 2 ends. My reference books do not make this very plain so am hoping some erudite Class 22 student on here may know. Tks.

There's a drawing on this Web page that shows which is the "A end" :-

There seem to be two circuit boards fitted in the Class 22 models, the later one seems to work everything correctly, the earlier one had issues re the lighting, thus we have produced two different ESU decoders which correct the earier lighting issues or the other is aimed at the current model.

Just for interest we now have Class 22's, Class 41's & Class 43's available.  See

Got my bargain D6332 yesterday and whilst it looks good, I do wish Dapol would sort out their quality control. I have suffered poor solder joints on their locos before, but this was a new one, one of the joints has no solder whatsoever. How the factory can solder the joints either side and miss one is beyond me (and that sort of things used to be my job).

The photo doesn't show it but the wire is in there.

Would they be manually soldered?

The other joints don't seem to be.

The surface mount components will have been soldered using something like a wave soldering machines, but the leads from track pick-ups / motor etc. will have been manually soldered. Dapol* have a history of not doing that well here, the early class 68s being a prime example.

* a problem that has also afflicted Hornby and Bachmann at times, although to a lesser extent in my experience.

The joints look OK in picture. A similar board (if not the same). Is in the 52s.I had problems via this board where we found "dry joints".A visit with soldering iron & a dab of flux to refow joint solved problem. If i have a model play up now i always look for dry solder joints & believe me most manufactures have the problem of "rouge" joints.

The joints were all ok bar two, the one that had not been made at all, and another dry joint (off photo) - nothing I can't sort but these locos shouldn't really be sent out in that state. My Class 68 had several wires that had to be resoldered before I was even prepared to try using it.

I succumbed to temptation and bought D6327 in blue with small yellow panels from Hatton's. I fitted a 6-function Zimo MX638D decoder after testing on DC. So far so good. She ran well with the Zimo decoder.

I like the way Dapol have arranged the lights: F0 works the headcode plus marker or tail light directionally at the A end, F1 works the headcode and marker light at the B end, and F3 works the tail light at that end. However, the cab lights refused to work at all. Then I realised the MX638D uses two logic outputs for the 5th and 6th functions. However, a useful trick with the MX634 and MX638 families is that the user can change the logic outputs to full powered outputs with a simple CV change, changing the decoders to MX634C or MX638C. The trick is to program CV8 to 3 for powered outputs (as the 'C' variant), or CV8  = 4 for logic outputs (as the 'D' variants).

Anyway, the cab lights at each end now work on functions 4 and 5, respectively.

I 'fixed' the lower body valance panels to the chassis with some black-tack to prevent them from randomly dropping off, although that would be prototypical behaviour!

The next job, before putting D6327 into service properly, is to put some headcodes in. On my previous Dapol class 22 I fitted some Heljan paper headcodes from one of their Western models inside the headcode boxes. I am working on a couple of alternative ideas for this one. I'll report back once I have done something about this.

What size labels did you use ?

I understand that there different sizes printed for 00 models.

I note you fixed the head codes externally, Is it not possible to fit them internally?

Many thanks

Hi Terry,

I can't remember off-hand what size the labels were. It is possible to fit the headcodes internally, but the thickness of the plastic glazing means you could not use the full-height characters. I did add some thin clear glazing cut to fit the aperture, on top of the newly added characters.

I did fit internal headcodes to my Dapol Western diesel using Heljan figures, but the results weren't entirely satisfactory to me. The class 22 effect is better, I think, but not perfect by any means.
