Some of you might have noticed Carl W's recent topic on his Hither Green PAD layout which he is building as part of the Lyddrail 2017 Challenge. So he doesn't feel alone here is my effort so far.

I have reverted back to a diesel stabling point, my big change is it is Western Region and will incorporate some blue locos for a change.

post-16423-0-18711000-1474238853_thumb.png

So far I have built the baseboards, laid the track, and wired it up. This evening I have had a trial operating session. I have designed the layout so it can be operated from either side and viewed from either side, there will be no backscene. Track is Peco code 100, using insulfrogs, with today's motors and drive systems there is no stalling on the insulfrog points, it don't 'alf save wiring.

Here are two views of the layout.

From the fiddle yard end. The control panel is mounted in the fiddle yard.

Locos at the buffer stops. One of the 47s will be renumbered, one day.

looking down the yard.

Using the track plan as a guide, locos can enter the shed from the top track or the third track. One set will be the lines to the passenger station and the other to the nearby freight yard. The next few photos show a Peak entering the stabling point form the lower fiddle yard. This involves the loco having to reverse twice so that it enters the fuel point from the bridge end.

The green 47 is driven forward to the headshunt  freeing the fuel point for the Peak, space is quite tight at Pig Lane.

The Brush then leaves the yard to take up its next duty.

Now follows is the daily delivery of fuel tankers replacing the empty ones.

post-16423-0-82139100-1474240332_thumb.jpg

The train is brought forward on to the bypass road.

post-16423-0-69970900-1474240396_thumb.jpg

The loco is uncoupled and moves on to the headshunt.

post-16423-0-99290400-1474240453_thumb.jpg

It then runs round its train.

post-16423-0-47207900-1474240494_thumb.jpg

The train is then propelled into the headshunt. This does tend to block up the workings of the stabling point so the delivery of the fuel has to be well timed.

post-16423-0-15729800-1474240517_thumb.jpg

The next move sees the loco going back down the run round loop before reversing to collect the empty wagons.

post-16423-0-60087800-1474240705_thumb.jpg

The empties are pulled forward then reversed and coupled up to the full tanks.

post-16423-0-32802300-1474240781_thumb.jpg

post-16423-0-00125400-1474240804_thumb.jpg

All the wagons are then pulled forward on the run round loop. The train is then reversed so that the loaded wagons can discharge their cargo.

post-16423-0-41182500-1474240926_thumb.jpg

Now the headshunt is free the warship can be brought forward freeing up the fuel line for another 47 and a 50.

post-16423-0-38828100-1474241032_thumb.jpg

The empty fuel tanks are now ready to be taken to the freight yard to start their journey back to the refinery.

Like it, as Phil said above.

It may be called Pig Lane but the layout is recognisably Ranelagh Bridge - an arrangement that I would dearly like in my next layout but which had to be the loser in the 'lack of space' compromise.

Cheers Phil, Paul and Andy,

The concept is to try and keep things simple, so it is DC. No lights, no noise sound or other gadgets.  :sungum:

Glad the hydraulics have met with approval, mind you I have enough 25s, 31s, 47s and Peaks to keep it WR without a oil bath in sight.  :nono:  :nono:  :nono:

As for Ranelagh Bridge it is stored at the moment while we wait our house sale. The WR locos need somewhere to run so I built them a new layout. Ranelagh Bridge track plan can be seen in many larger depots if you look carefully, it is the basic shed layout.

I will (well may) weather the locos. I need to decide what time of year the layout is set and what the weather conditions are on the day. You see some lovely weathered locos with all the damp muck that gathers in winter running on layouts that are set in summer. Dirt is darker on wet days than dry days.

No but after being hid away, in case we got a buyer for the house, it was set up yesterday and I have had an operating session on it. So that is progress of a sort.

Good Man, and with a small Layout and 24 hours notice of a viewing there's plenty of time to hide it away again.

Have a good New Year mate.

Any updates Clive?

Not much has happened, the plan is to work on it during May and June when is light and I can set up in the garden. I have added the hard standing and brought some more locos and stock. I seem to get myself in trouble when I bring it indoors and at the moment there is not much room in the garage.

That's where I am going wrong, better give Mrs M back her 6 inch brush and steal the little one.

Now where is the turps :scratchhead: :O  :scared:  Oh I will just hide it in the bottom of the decorating box. :sungum:

Hi Steve

Cheers mate.

Track has been painted, ballast in place waiting watered down PVA (with a few drops of washing up liquid) to ba applied. Hardstanding painted. Bridge started, as is teh fuel tank. Water tank built again needs painting. Progress slow.

A few more blue en-gins and a bubble car.

Mind you I am checking my tape measure as it seems to have a shorter 4 ft 8 1/2 ins marking on it than other entrees rulers.

Morning Clive, it's looking good mate, but I've found room for at least 8 more Points, you must be slipping, all that wasted baseboard and no Track! :O

Don't tempt me, who needs scenery?

Hello Clive.

I really don't know where Paul is going to put all of these layouts.  At least you should be safe from being put outside given that I think you are the only person who has obeyed the "rules" - No fines here!

It's all looking good so far, plenty of locos to be shunted about.  Have you started on the scenery yet or are you in the same boat as me? - I've still got my wiring to do!

All the best, Cheers, Andy.

Hi Andy

Wow your post was well timed, I was going to post an update so can answer your question at the same time. The layout has been operational since September, so I should have had it finished by now. It has even had a trial outing, I took it to my club and a few of the guys had a drive. So fits in the car and travels well.

I hope I haven't ruined the layout, I have just added the watered down PVA (with a drop of washing up liquid) to the ballast. Why does it always make me feel I have messed up the layout. When it dries I will tart up any areas of track and ballast that look bare, then set about freeing up points and making it electrically good again.

I have an area of hard standing like there was at Ranelagh Bridge, but I am not happy with the concrete effect. The bits between the tracks have been painted earth brown an are waiting to have the greenery, paths etc placed on it. The scenic break, the bridge has been started, the water tower needs a paint job. Important to to things are the fuel tank, the fuel pumps and unloading thingies. A couple of little huts and it should be ready for weathering. I don't think the locos will have anything done to them by Lydd Rail. Now had I gone Eastern I could have filled it with all sorts of home made locos and used bits off Hanging Hill......perhaps there might be a change.

Edit, I have just had a thought, as I appear to be the only person to obey the rules, then I can see I am in line to be disqualified for doing so. You know how Paul's mind works sometimes.

You'll probably have to do the washing up as a forfeit ;)

I normally am one of the few who help with the washing up, you would have thought with his retirement package he would have brought a dishwasher. :scratchhead:
