Hi Mike

I agree the Regent III would have not been in service in 1970 but sure the Regent V would have been. I remember seeing them in Bedford bus station on a joint United Counties and City of Oxford service between the two. I will double check with my brother who is a bus spotter.

Clive

Apologies for the late comment but just to confirm that the last AEC Regent V's were withdrawn from City of Oxford by September 1971, namely 953-5            953-5AJO.

Great to see this layout at Alexandra palace!

Interesting  change of fuel tanks. They looked ok.

I find it strange, that you have not mentioned, that the people are all hand made from millput? These were wonderful to see. Individual figures that have not been mass produced! Where is the order form?!

Thanks, so a Regent V just fits in my time period like the Warship and class 22.

Glad it went well mate, now how about an extension at one end?

Extension ??????

No way. My plan of escape worked, show closed at 4.30pm, all on the barrow in one load, in the back of the car and rolling out of Alexandra Place by 5.03pm.

The layout didn't behave as well as I would have liked.

Locos, all ran reasonably except the 08s. One throw its con rods on its first shunt. and the other just ran very badly. the Lima bubble cars wheels cruded up quickly. The other were showing signs of bad running towards the end. The track was really dirty at the end of both days.

Thanks to Andy the Saturday boy and Dave who was only there for the free cuppa, for their skills in driving one of my designed layouts.

It is not a crowd puller, but I have found operating other small layouts they are not as exciting as big roundy roundy layouts to the general public and a lot of the modelling fraternity.

BIG THANK you to all who came and said "Hello". I will not name you all just in case I leave someone out or add someone who wasn't there.

It was a pleasure to put a face to the name, Clive (and to Dave).  Super little layout too; less quantity, more quality.

In fact I've had an excellent day at the show, managed to not spend TOO much on quite a few useful bits to help along the Round Tuit Project Collection.

Just watched a short clip of Pig Lane on You Tube.   Looking good.

Cheers, Ade.

Thanks Ade.

I have just watched the videos from Ally Pally, I never saw any other layouts than the few by mine. I was that busy all weekend.

I forgot to say, when I setting up Nick Freezer (exhibition manager) passed a comment about how he like my depot layouts as I seem to get things right, like fuel tanks being able to take the volume of fuel delivered by the oil trains. A few minutes later when I opened the buildings box I realised the fuel tank was still in Lincolnshire. Thankfully one the stalls had a Bachmann fuel tanks model that played the part very well.

The Bachy tanks may be modified for the Exchange.

Good to see you Clive, sorry we were unable to spend more time with you. You know what its like getting Keith around shows but we did manage to see everything we wanted to.

Ok, reliability was not as good as you'd liked, but Dave was pleased I'm sure to operate such a huge layout (by his standards).

The small details always go a long way, despite being a long way from our viewpoint!

Nice to see you & the layout yesterday.

I think the above comment is a bit hard on Dave. He was running your layout every time I passed it & I only saw you once. I think he earned a few free cuppas!

That's their problem, keep on doing what you do. You're probably better just doing the more specialist/well thought of exhibitions, you'll get a more apporeciative audience than at the general money making type exhibitions such as AP.

He was very good. For a lot of the time yesterday I was busy with other things which went over the time expected and Dave just kept on driving and entertaining the public.

Your layout is one of the small types that are open and welcoming!

With no back scene or lighting gantries, the ‘human’ behind it is accessible for a chat!

It did not matter that the class 08 had a problem, it made it real!

Exhibitons can be a very social event. Thanks to Rmweb, I spoke to more people than I have before at Ally Pally. I am now more richer in knowledge and experience.

Great to see Pig Lane on Sunday, I didn't get a chance to say hello but you were pretty busy and wasn't around when it was quieter. I like the track plan and your method of operating, Dave certainly had plenty of things running on there!

Well done to you both.

Clive, it was great to meet you. I always think of you as the man who builds the flat pack diesels.

I liked pig lane. It's got me thinking that perhaps I should build something on that scale, that way I may have a chance of actually finishing something!

Cheers,

John.

Clive. Do you have a copy of the playing card system you could post? As we spoke about on Saturday I would like to try that to operate my layout and the one bit I cannot remember is how the playing cards decide moves to a specific place, whilst I do remember you said that if I have 7 trains, then I need to use ace to 7. Thanks

Hi Steve

The system I use on this layout is the simplest I have ever used.  I only have 12 locos and two trains. Each loco is allocated a card number or picture, an ace is for the fuel train and a joker is for the stores train. Irrespective of where the loco is if its number is next then it is the next loco to arrive if off the layout or depart if on the layout. With the two trains they bring on fresh wagons, do a bit of shunting and then remove the empty wagons.

If as you say you have seven locos then put the 8 to king cards some where safe.

The system ensures all locos get a run, I have found in the past not having a system my favorites run more than they should and those tucked up at the back of a siding stay there all show. Plus boredom soon sets in.

Clever! :-)

How many locos do you have on shed/off scene when you start?

Presumably locos get to the back of sidings because others get stacked on top?

Another assumption: locos onto the depot get fuelled before storage, locos off go straight to ‘traffic’.

I have a feeling that locos could get an A Exam on small depots like Pig Lane, do you simulate that? (Calling UDJ . . .)

Paul.

Hi Paul

On setting up I turned over five cards and plonked those five locos on the layout in suitable places.

All locos coming "on shed" are refueled then shunted into a siding to make space for the next loco to be refueled. From my understanding  is at many locations the A exam would be done while being refueled.
