Jimbuoy
Hi, I'm new to N Guage and am building my first layout. I'm having a problem with couplings. I have the Graham Farish Jinty and it's rear coupling seems to droop a touch. (despite it bing bought new) It pulls a couple of Dapol Carriages with no problem. But Peco trucks/ wagons regulalry come uncoupled. Have I lost a spring? Are the couplings changable and if so how. Is there a better/standard coupling I can use Thanks in advance Jim
RMweb Premium Kris Posted September 25, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 25, 2016 You could try the Dapol knuckle couplings, an easy fit in the current version of the Jinty, but the Peco wagons would require modification.
mjkerr
An alternative is to modify the existing coupling I have to do this with the outermost Dapol coupling on Mark 3 coaches Very gently bend the straight section of the coupling, using a pair of nose pliers
Dr Al
Farish have gone through a few (subtle) iterations of their NEM coupler, and this is the most recent, and not necessarily the best. Drooping is not an uncommon occurance. As suggested you could bend the coupler head (I've done this on occasion), or you could clip in a normal Dapol coupler instead - I've done this also - if you unclip the coupler (just pulls out) you'll see the detail of the end is slightly different to other designs - below is the standard and the two little prongs at the top can be gently adjusted in height to sort out any droop. This isn't a standard method, but I've used extensively. You'll see that the Farish version probably doesn't have these if it's the newest style. Chris Higgs
It's amazing how some things never change. I can remember 40+ years ago when Farish wagons persistently suffered from drooping couplings and coming uncoupled. Peco wagons on the other hand where on their best behaviour Plus ca change... RMweb Premium Crepello Posted September 27, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 27, 2016 You could try a small piece of styrene strip in the Jinty's NEM pocket; The Peco wagons don't have springs, so are less tolerant of bumps in track.
