Does it make a massive amount of difference? ...albeit needing to check photos of one's chosen Prototype more carefully (mine will be good with the "untidy" pipework :sungum: )

 

It does if you want the model you're ordering to represent a particular engine as it was at a particular time.

As far as I read it, the spec adjustments aren't major things are they?

Plain Green for the GWR variants (add own Shirtbutton or G W R decals to choice) seems a good idea to me, and the supplied injector pipework seems to be based on the most common ("untidy") variant, with spare parts included to change to the "tidy" version if required. 

At least I now know exactly what & where the injector pipework actually is...!!! :mosking: :whistle:

Chris B and I have decided to post some of the CAD drawings for the forthcoming Minerva GWR 57XX/8750 0-6-0PT locomotive. Both locos will be available with or without top-feed. We have cut away the drawings to show the cab interior and  the representation of inside motion under the boiler. The various "flying" parts such as steps, vacuum and steam pipes, tool boxes, whistle shields, fire-irons and bucket (with working handle) will be supplied as loose items for the owner to fit. This is to allow maximum choice of variant to be reproduced and also to ensure the parts do not come loose or break during transit. The model is progressing through the tooling phase and we are on schedule for delivery of the 8750 next summer with the 57XX following three months later.

Looking good. I looked at the image showing the inside motion and thought "Ooh look, a Dean Goods...."    ;)

I thought the same, but then I checked the rivets on the splashers, cab cutout shape, firebox shape, lining, number plate position, topfeed, smokebox door, splasher size and many other details and I have to conclude it was not a CAD of a Great Western Engine at all.

 

On a more serious note, is there any chance of an as-built cab for the 57xx. As far as I can tell we have had 5 x 4mm, 2 x 2mm scale and 2 x prospective 7mm scale RTR models with a cab that did not exist before 1938. I am sure that Edwardian would approve if he were not hiding under a bridge.

If I correctly understand the offering, it's two "early" locos, option of riveted or plain tanks, and one later one. The early locos will have "porthole" cabs, which I understand to be the "as built" (1930) condition. The next-to-last picture in Chris' post above shows it with a welded tank.

No boy missing anything - I am not explaining fully. As built the first 300 locos had a cab with a pillar rail at the front of the doors and no shutters and a stanchion rail at the back of the door. From 1938 onwards (IIRC) these were modified to have stanchion rails either side of the doors and shutters.

 

The Mainline, Dapol (2mm), Bachmann, Minerva and as far as I can tell the Dapol 7mm model will all have the post 38 cab.

 

My experience with a Mainline body is that the cab can be modified but it is not easy.

Until its recent overhaul 7714 (Kerr Stuart built) on the Severn Valley Rly still had its rivetted tanks IIRC.  I don't recall seeing it mentioned on here but all the preserved ex London Transport panniers have a modified cab in that the cab roof gutters were cut back to fit the LT loading gauge.  Only a small change but quite noticeable.  The only preserved 57xx with unmodified 'early' type cabs are 7714 and 7754 which went from B.R. to the NCB and thence the SVR and Llangollen respectively.

The GWR org website suggests that the symmetric "knob mounted" cab handrails were being built by 1933, but this is clearly not exhaustive. Similarly, it appears that they were not all converted by 1938.

 

Were all the early ones built like this, or only some batches of them?

 

I guess it's back to finding a prototype picture and modelling it. Safest approach!

The cab handrails on some of the earlier 5700 to 8749 engines were later modified to the '8750' style on an adhoc basis.

 

Note the difference in brake hanger style - double hanger on the earlier locos, single hanger on the later locos. (With the earlier style at a different angle.)

 

Some of the earlier locos with the early-style brake hangers were later modified to the later style of brake hanger, again on an adhoc basis.

The  toolboxes designed for the Minerva Peckett E 0-4-0ST, Kerr Stuart Victory 0-6-0T and 57XX/8750 0-6-0PT locos are now available as a separate accessory pack. The pack contains two each of small, medium and large sized tool boxes. The price is £4 per pack + £1 P&P all inclusive of VAT. They are also available from the Minerva stand, which will next be out at the GOG show at Kettering on 4th March 2017.

Will the BR/Black locos be lined? Also will it be a paint finish, or bare plastic?

The BR locos will be unlined black. The plastic superstructure will be finished in moulded black plastic and the diecast metal footplate will be painted black. The finishe will be the same as the Kerr Stuart Victory 0-6-0T and Peckett E 0-4-0ST as shown in the photographs.

 

Chris, any chance of dimensions for the large toolbox please?

The large toolbox is 20mm x 8.5mm x 8.5mm.

Here are some photographs of the first test shots of the large components for the Minerva 0 Gauge RTR 8750 from the moulds. Obviously there is still much to do, but we remain confident about delivery in July 2017.

 

The discounted offer price for advanced orders of the Minerva GWR 8750 0-6-0PT locomotive  expires on 31st March 2017. Deduct £40 from the normal prices shown below:
• DC   £265 + £9 carriage
• DCC fitted  £320 + £9 carriage
• DCC sound fitted £390 + £9 carriage

The welded and riveted 57XX versions will  become available around October and Christmas of 2017 respectively.  The prices are the same as the 8750 version, but we are pleased to announce that we are extending the deadlines for these discounted advanced order prices to:

• 30th June 2017 for the welded tank version
• 30th September 2017 for the riveted tank version

In each case, this is approximately 3 months before production quantities are received.

Here is a link to a short video clip of the first engineering prototype of the Minerva 0 gauge RTR GWR 57XX 0-6-0PT on the test track at the factory. The model is incomplete and the 8750 prototype is on its way to the UK.
