Minerva GWR Pannier Tank - open for advanced orders

Assuming it's all connected correctly (and I guess it is, or it wouldn't go at all) then I don't believe it can be a motor/loco issue - the motor doesn't "know" what it's connected to, it just "sees" a voltage on its input, and reacts accordingly.  My guess is that this is an issue with the decoder output, but it is certainly unusual - are you sure that the decoder has been properly reset?  I'd be looking for a specialist setting (automatic signalling?) but I'm not very familiar with Lenz decoders, as I use Zimo and ESU.

Would be interested to hear what you find out

best

Sounds like a decoder issue.

That's what I thought, which is why I changed the decoder.

Like I said, I'm not that bothered as I only own a few O gauge locos, so always use them on DCC, I was just curious really.

If another 8pin decoder passes my way I'll swap them round and see what happens.

Thanks

Just had an enjoyable hour reading back through this thread.  Can somebody with more knowledge than me confirm my line of thought?  On the GWR liveries, the wording 'Great Western' was, I think, used up until the early 1930s, when the shirt button logo was introduced.  The change to 'G W R' came in the early 1940s, during the war years.  Am I right in my thoughts with that?

I note when the shirt button option was dropped Chris K mentioned that those with existing orders would be fulfilled using transfers fitted in the UK - Chris is there a recommended transfer for that to use with the plain green livery?  Can anyone suggest a suitable transfer option for the buffer beam numbers as well - again, if I am right, they only went to smokebox plates under BR?   Normally I use Railtec Transfers, but I don't think Steve does a 'Great Western' wording and lettering style at present.

Rich

I have always used HMRS transfers for my locos.

Your time line is correct,

Fox do all the suitable transfers as well,

Thanks Simon and Steve.

Much appreciated.

That is true. I'm sure they will appear in the fullness of time but Fox will be able to get you out of a hole there.

Coincidentally I'm literally just fulfilling a long-outstanding request to design a 7mm GWR Rhymney pack for PW (although I suspect Steve Fay might have something to do with it too?!), vaguely in parallel with the existing range of complete loco packs w/ choice of number for BR period. It contains 3d cab side plates (number of your choice), matching 3d smoke box, 3d shed code (depot of choice), 3d caution plates, and L/R or L/L facing crests. Here's a sneak peak with a pack for #42:

Thanks Steve,

We'll have to get you to do the 'Great Western' lettering - I know you spend all your time sat twiddling your thumbs trying to come up with something to do  :jester:

Rich,

I use HMRS Methfix decals, but then I have had them for ages. I look forward to transfers from Railtec. Those I have used to date have been first class.

The so-called shirt-button totem replaced "GREAT WESTERN" and was first applied in 1934 lasting until 1942.

From 1942-1947ordinary passenger and goods classes carried the letters 'G W R' appropriately spaced on tender or tank sides, and express passenger locos had the Coat of Arms between 'G' and 'W'. From 1942 to 1945, all classes receiving full repaints in the works, except for some Kings, Castles and Stars, were painted all black, as a result of wartime shortages. Locos were not lined, and it seems that safety valve covers were painted over. For locos painted black, the G W insignia did not have any black shading. The insignia used for 'G W R' on some locos by Caerphilly Works during and after WWII was in a sans-serif font called Grotesque, but it isn't known whether it was in gold or straw colour. Green livery was restored in 1945.

Smokebox number plates were a BR fitting.

Regards,

Chris

I’d suggest that in general they came in only when the next visit was scheduled, unless something dire had happened. And I’d suspect that the repaints became rather less frequent and possibly on an as-needed basis as war started, and certainly afterwards, when austerity was a fact of life rather than a policy. Of course, this is probably more true for the pannier & branch line coaches than the King or Castle & Cornish Riviera sets.

I think the early thirties was probably quite a good time for maintenance and upkeep, (from the railways point of view) as wages were relatively low (though beginning to rise perhaps) there was plenty of labour, and the government were handing out loans to encourage employment. Hence the new loco sheds under the loan acts. The forties were a different matter.

The counsel of perfection is to choose your loco, and then find an accurate colour photo of it on the precise date of your model, and then copy that... :)

Hallo Chris!

Well, I think I shall call it a day on the weathering of 3702 by Minerva. I do like the very fine guard rails protecting the bunker windows. The photos are taken on Tonfanau Camp, but I am posting them here for continuity.

Regards,

CK
