Boxcab
Here are two of my O Scale Alco's; an Atlas QSI fitted RS1 and a RS3 that is currently being fitted with a Loksound V4.IMG_0033.jpg Is the RS3 a Weaver "China Drive" one? The decoder looks like a Loksound XL. Have you got the latest version of the sound file for the RS3? it is better than the earlier version. Nice to see some more O Scale modelling. Have you got the latest version of the sound file for the RS3? it is better than the earlier version. Nice to see some more O Scale modelling. Looks like the Atlas Trainman RS3 to me. Being in the Master range, the Atlas RS1 is a much more accurate model than it's stablemate.
RMweb Premium Ref44 Posted March 19, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2018 The RS3 is the Atlas Trainman and it is the XL version of the V4. The sound file is the latest version and sounds fantastic. It probably needs the master volume winding back for use at home I do have a Weaver RS3 with the single Pittman motor and chain drive, which is slowly being worked on. It has a QSI Titan in it at present, but having heard the Loksound one, I suspect that will change when funds permit. There is also a RSD 12 which needs chipping.
JAMO
You have installed a XL version. The L version isn't enough for power?
RMweb Premium Ref44 Posted March 20, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 20, 2018 The XL was initially purchased for my RSD 12. It has been moved to the RS3 as that will be a better fit on my version of a Chicago Fork. My understanding is that the XL has a stay alive built in and that was the reason for trying it, rather than the extra amp in motor current. Like others I have used HO decoders in O scale without frying them.
JAMO
I permit me to post here Broadoak's S-2 Alco photos from his thread. A very nice model! Always a popular subject for a picture we see a TVRR Alco S2 switching grain cars at Broadoak yard. Peter M

DanielB
More O scale Alco goodness. I've been repainting a Weaver B&M RS3 that I bought from Jason Dickie. It now looks like this: Still a ways to go, but I'm enjoying this project considerably.

RMweb Premium skipepsi Posted April 28, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 28, 2018 (edited) I have found them. The boxed ones can go back on ebay including the S1 unbuilt in its box its weathered brother can go too. Then the tricky bit comes I have 4 BL2's to go with the WM RS3 and some GP9's to go with the ATSF RS 1, the Soo line RS 27 is not leaving so that leaves the NYC which I think is a RS 2. Range of manufacturers from Atlas to Bachman including Proto 2000. Edited April 28, 2018 by skipepsi
DanielB
Which gray did you use ? Humbrol Acrylic Primer - comes in a small rattle can. Simplest paint scheme ever: Prime it, paint the nose, draw on the black line around the yellow with a Sharpie, apply decals, seal with dullcote, then attack it with Pan Pastels to weather it up.

I've struggled with decals on primer, so have been looking thru the shelves at Halfords for a suitable gray for L&N and covered hoppers.
DanielB
I use Humbrol Decalfix in a thin layer on the surface of the primer before I apply the decals, and it seems to work fine. Getting them to sit on all the raised details can be a pain, but I have taken to cutting the decals into smaller pieces and jigsawing them together. I use "racking grey" enamel from Halfords for light grey covered hoppers - I think it looks ok, and grey primer for some of the darker grey ones, but sealed with varnish. cheers Paul..... mikjd
During the 'close season' I've managed to pick up a few O scale Alco's. Two of them are Lionel 3-rail, and require wheels, pilot spacers, handrails and couplers. As they were new, and under £100 each, I couldn't resist (despite the cost of postage etc). They are dummy locos, but that's fine for double heading. One of the loco's is a bit of a rarity, although the roadname is a massive clue ...... Youngest at the front, oldest at the rear ........
mikjd
A few close ups, first the RS11. I never thought I'd have a loco with the Train-phone antenna, that will need to be surgically removed. I need to find some pictures to see if any of the hardware was still visible after removal.
mikjd
Next up the youngest, the C425. A 'quick' patch to PC patched Conrail should do.
mikjd
Now the oddity, a high hood C420. I'm surprised that Lionel made the changes to the tooling to produce this, but am grateful they did. Now if only their high hood GP30 could be found so cheaply ...... A lot of weathering required on this one. I have another one of these coming which may donate it's high hood to produce a N&W C425 ......
