In between weathering stock, fitting dcc and dcc sound for a number of clients I spend some of my time bodging together a variety of vehicles.

These can be in plastic, brass or a mixture. While I am a 4mm (OO) modeller of the LM Region of BR I do end up with some interesting bits and pieces ...as shown in ...

Exhibit 1

post-7650-0-66009400-1475507339_thumb.jpg

A pair of CLC brake vans for use on Herculaneum Dock, Mike Edge layout.

The 6 wheeler was acquired almost completely built but has been reworked and is a Jidenco kit.

The 4 wheeler is a D&S kit built, painted and weathered by myself. Wrong colour scheme for Herculaneum Dock but I did think a CL lettered vehicle would be nice.

and to show a diversity of what I get up to

post-7650-0-53056600-1475507510_thumb.jpg

a BR built Porthole Brake Third Corridor (BTK) This is a real mash up of components. Sides are etched from 247 Developments. Ends are castings from 246. Buffers are Comet cast whitemetal. Bogies are whitemetal Westward (re-used from something else). Underframe etched from 247 with whitemetal fittings from comet and 247. Solebars and trussing from Evergreen angles.

Interior made up using Comet doors, Southern Pride seats and plasticard.

Painted with Halfords paint (brown primer) and lined using Humbrol and a bow pen

Awaits some couplings ( KD at inner end and DG at the outer (brake) end ready for use on the new Leeds Club layout of Chapel en le Frith

I have had a DJH Standard 4MT I bought sans motor for what seems like ages.

I have now managed to fit a High Level gearbox (which went together fairly quickly) and a Mashima Motor I have now fitted it.

post-7650-0-27099100-1476187938_thumb.jpg

The gear ratio is 30:1 and coupled with a Mashima 1424 it fits (with a bit of jiggling) onto the middle axle. This loco is destined for banking duties so it doesn't need to have a high top speed. If it does I will change the motor.

As with most of my stock it has now been weathered

I have been bodging some signals for our Club layout, Chapel en le Frith.

First up I have fabricated the low underslung starter from brass and MSE parts. The signal post has been fitted into a large diameter tube to allow it to be removable from eth layout- how I did that is shown below

post-7650-0-84789800-1476910159_thumb.jpg

The idea is that these signals will be removable but will also be servo driven.

In the second photograph you can see the signal "Planted" and the tube for the next signal in place but not cut to height.

post-7650-0-07915400-1476910181_thumb.jpg

There is a 2 doll 4 signal arm at one end of the station

I have fabricated this from brass tube, some brass channel and some MSE signal arms

post-7650-0-52220000-1476910024_thumb.jpg

I made up a base (which fits snugly into a piece of tube already "planted" in the baseboard (see previous photos. This has a large dameter tube with 4 operating wire "holding" tubes soldered into the bigger tube, two either side of where the signal post will fit.

post-7650-0-41192200-1476910031_thumb.jpg

The post was then fitted and held in place by aA piece of nickel silver shaped to fit around the post and the operating wire tubes.

post-7650-0-63621800-1476910039_thumb.jpg

Now just have to fit operating the signal controls, servos and wiring.

Today I have been sorting out a problem spotted the other day by LNER 4479. I had bought a third hand DJH standard 4MT tender loco. It was motorless so i have made up and fitted a High Level/Mashima  motor and gearbox.

Without testing it I took it along when I went to "help" LNER 4479 this week. He is always keen to see locomotives and, as usual, we did try it but it ran very poorly. On checking it appeared that one central axle bearing was too low.

On investigation it transpires that one wheel was slightly larger than the other 5.. a first for a set of Romford drivers fitted by someone when the loco was built. Luckily in my "odd" wheels box I came across a suitable wheel (well actually a pair of them), which has now been fitted and the lcoo now runs very well.

As my old mother used to say .."You learn something new every day!"

So its the Christmas break.. now what should I do?

Well I mentioned a pile of coach sides. So picking sides for items which I already have Chassis built and ready...

first up a Stanier ex LM 50' kitchen car, door handles and corridor handrails added.

post-7650-0-22650800-1482928107_thumb.jpg

and the other side

post-7650-0-41400200-1482928118_thumb.jpg

and a Period III Corridor Composite ( to fit onto a battered Airfix one)

post-7650-0-13256400-1482928126_thumb.jpg

again with corridor hand rail added

post-7650-0-32605900-1482928139_thumb.jpg

and a Period 2 Coach - with an etched Stones ventilator added to see how it looks before final fitting

Time for a quick update.

I have been converting one set of 50' ex LMS Period III kitchen car sides into

post-7650-0-38228100-1483280483_thumb.jpg

a complete coach

post-7650-0-71781600-1483280486_thumb.jpg

This now needs a coat of primer/undercoat and top coat (BR Maroon) as well as a change of couplings (Kaydee No5 ) and then lining and lettering.

And I have been getting some more of the signals for Chapel en le Frith (our club layout) to a more complete state.

post-7650-0-66550400-1483280879_thumb.jpg

and from the other side

post-7650-0-93183600-1483280883_thumb.jpg

and all of the brass bit now fitted to the gantry

Another day another...

ex LMS coach

This is a Third open

and the other side

post-7650-0-14185500-1485091734_thumb.jpg

Notice the tarnished brass where it has been sellotaped to the card in the Comet pack. This one uses a Comet Chassis.. still to do .. add roof details, sort out bogies and .. doh! forgot the dynamo...

Then off to the paint shop.

I think you need to add the whole roof not just the details.

I have finally got round to fitting a new chassis to a very old Mainline Jubilee - I had renamed it Sturdee many moons ago.

post-7650-0-57297000-1486485456_thumb.jpg

I have used a comet chassis and valve gear/pistons kit, along with Markits wheels and a Mashima 1624 coupled to a Comet gearbox.

As i was fitting the second guide to the piston on one side.. ping... lost it!  I do have another kit with the etch and white metal parts so I will dig that our and finish this.

I will check it runs then fit brakes, final pickups etc and a quick spray of Halfords black and ..another Jubilee for Chapel en le frith!

Sturdee update: I found the missing part and its all fitted back together. Not completed as I need to reline the boiler bands and add weight.

Two "quick" build items though have been completed up to being weathered

post-7650-0-83407500-1488471583_thumb.jpg

two Parkside ex LMS brake vans with duckets. Trying to get the handrails to look like the photos of these in service is not easy... bent, twisted, out of alignment ..yep they are like that

These are also for Chapel to go with two of the ones without duckets, one of which is featured below

post-7650-0-10511200-1488471721_thumb.jpg

they are something different to the run of the mill Airfix/Hornby LMS offerings...

post-7650-0-05959600-1497216507_thumb.jpg

Just need to finish the 62' dining coach to go with one of these (I built a Westdale one as my first ever Coach kit build while at University

Kit bought at Wakefield Model Centre.. those were the days!)

So for our new club layout Chapel en le Frith we needed Jubilees.

I had a Mainline one

post-7650-0-99470100-1502810471_thumb.jpg

which has now had a new Comet chassis, High Level gearbox etc fitted

then I had a Bachmann one

post-7650-0-43782200-1502810436_thumb.jpg

Billy Ruffian - engine shed cleaned

then I bought one of Geoff Brewins estate

post-7650-0-30801700-1502810389_thumb.jpg

Leeward Islands

and finally a Ks/Hornby mix

post-7650-0-77870100-1502810352_thumb.jpg

Sakatchewan - awaiting weathering.

I believe I have another Ks one lurking somewhere but I thinks that's enough

With Mainline and Bachmann you have a straight throatplate and sloping one; for additional variation, which is the essence of the class, I think you need a domeless one amongst them and maybe a variation on the smokebox saddle too. Plus there's the Stanier 3.5K tender, I don't know if Fowler ones were still attached in BR days.

Lovely engines.

Fowler tenders were still attached into the 1960s. Seahorse swapped its Fowler tender in about our time period but i think we are trying to get her in "Fowler tender" mode.

Lummy! Where did the Autumn go??

Well, as it is Christmas I have found time to do some modelling

First up....a Parkside Grampus kit.

post-7650-0-33272700-1514473852_thumb.jpg

building this reminded me how bad a (very) few Parkside kits were. Some items didn't fit, other (ie the sides) are already bowing....

I will get couplings and numbers etc on this today.

Then, a Chivers ex LMS 6 wheel Fish van..

post-7650-0-42514500-1514473982_thumb.jpg

a delight to build, awaiting transfers, couplings, a bit more paint on the roof then weathering

And some more coaches. First up an ex LM Period II Suburban Third. Unknown make of side,247 etched floor pan, Comet/247 castings,

Bachmann bogies. Roof is cut to length but needs fitting as does interior fittings and door handles.

post-7650-0-32671900-1514474047_thumb.jpg

This will be in BR Maroon for use on Chapel en Le Frith.

And

I started the ex LMS Period II Open Third last Christmas.

Well it is moving along now as sides and ends have been welded together.

post-7650-0-10381600-1514474223_thumb.jpg

Will be either Crimson and Cream or LMS lined maroon. Comet sides, 246 ends.

And to go with it ..

an ex LMS Period II 12 wheel dining car

post-7650-0-64813100-1514474311_thumb.jpg

as it happens this has comet sides, a floor and fully kitted out roof is ready for this one.

(I also have a similar vehicle from a set of 5522 parts which I was given but this needs a major rebuild)

One will be in BR Crimson/Cream the other in LMS Maroon (1930s livery).

and, finally a set of three ex LM Period III non Porthole TOs (follow up on the one completed last Christmas.)

post-7650-0-50836600-1514474515_thumb.jpg

Probably to be finished in BR Maroon as I have a few of these in BR Crimson and Cream already.

....a pile of coach sides and ends...

post-7650-0-73315100-1514474579_thumb.jpg

At this rate I may just get my pile of coach kits finished in 5 years time....

I found - too late - that the height of the Grampus ends and sides didn't match, so it's best only to view my model from one side...

This was made in Singapore, although I don't think that had anything to do with it.
