RMweb Premium Barry O Posted December 31, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2018 Plan for today is to sort out 3 roof sections. Has anyone else got a real problem matching Comet roof profiles to cast coach ends? If these are completed, the interiors will be a doddle.. but two of the three coaches are to be finished in blood and custard livery - so a bit of warmth is required to get the custard in place. After that... finishing the Chapel signals, a DeCrostied 9F and a J11... plus a bit of weathering... Have a great 2019 everyone! Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted January 17, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 17, 2019 Well managed to just about complete the 65' Period III coach. looks nice with it kitchen car (which has also seen some attention. Too cold for spraying the "custard" on the two other coaches. I may just build the interiors next. Baz
Jub45565
Probably a bit late! - but the Comet roof is a hybrid to suit several profiles. Therefore it only suits the Comet ends. Unfortunately 247 don't do the correct roof any more. My current choice is the Dapol kit one. They can be cheap but does seem a big waste - & they refuse to answer emails requesting them as a spare part. Looking good though!
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted January 17, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 17, 2019 (edited) Very nice Baz!. I need a 50' kitchen car for my Caledonian - it will be the first Comet kit I have built. I think I will be ok up to forming the roof and attching to the sides. Any pifalls there? No, it is a fairly simple kit. I build up the sides with handles etc then the underframes. I bought a Kaufman clamp from Branchlines to get the sides/ends in the right place for soldering. I think the roof fits more easily with the Comet ends. JF Probably a bit late! - but the Comet roof is a hybrid to suit several profiles. Therefore it only suits the Comet ends. There was a correct version but the extruding tool for it was lost. These need a lot of settling but they can be made to fit. Might do something else when I finish the period I and II coaches I am part way through. Baz Edited January 20, 2019 by Barry O

Hmm, I still reckon it would work. Anyway, the proper chairs for sitting in whilst dining on a train are loose Pullman chairs. I had one in my office at Lovers Walk. Very comfortable.
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted February 4, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 4, 2019 I have now fitted tables to the Period III 65' coach as well as no smoking decals in some of the windows. (Thanks to Andrew at Wizzard for the tables) With other things going on it may be some time until I can complete the remaining coaches and one or two wagons. So don'y hold your breath but watch this space... Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted May 20, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2019 Finally getting there! Two Blood and Custard ex LMS coaches are nearly finished. They still need tables ( and a Period II Diag 1761 TO needs some seats. This is one of the early Period I Open Thirds used as part of a mainline catering set. Need to complete the interior and then fit the Stones ventilators. Baz
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted May 20, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 20, 2019 How do you make your Stones Ventilators? I'm in the middle of making an ex-LMS set for my Dudley Zoo Excursion trains and it includes three P1/P2 coaches fitted with these. I haven't decided yet on the best way to represent them considering that they are layout coaches, not museum glass case specimens or competition entries. Buhar
I've been wondering about casting in clear resin, but it would be an expensive route. Maybe overlay clear plastic strips or scribe some acetate.
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted May 20, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2019 I have some nickel silver etches courtesy of Nicktoix. Comet openings are slightly small so I adjust the etches to fit. You do notice the stones vents in pictures of coaches fitted with them I used to use scribed acetate shaped to fit, then glued in...but the etches do look better. RMweb Premium Barry O Posted July 16, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 16, 2019 at last some progress on the blood and custard TOs. Stones ventilators fitted Tables also fitted and the PII TO Oops spotted a wonky table or two and start has been made on a PD I ex LMS CK and the other side Baz
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted July 16, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 16, 2019 Those Stones vents are making me jealous. I'm just doing three P1/P2 opens for excursion stock and they look rather smart compared to my plastic efforts so far, most of which are now landfill.
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted July 16, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 16, 2019 Despite being etched or me by Nicktoix I still have a bit of work to do to get them to fit. The Nickel Silver etc looks good though/ baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted July 18, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 18, 2019 Tried the TOs out last night on Chapel en le Frith. Worked fine. Now need to crack on with the CK today. Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted July 18, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 18, 2019 Between gardening, travelling to umpire cancelled cricket matches and life in general the CK is coming along... Final livery to apply (Carmine and Cream), interiors and roof details still yo be done. and the corridor side . Note the body has not been raised on teh bogies as yet Some time ago I bought a Southern Pride BR Mk1 BSK in Maroon to go with six other BR Mk1 s. Described as "Started" but well constructed (!) it has been a bit of a challenge. This too needs general etched details fitting and the roof needs painting. Apologies for the sun reflections...too bright today. Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted August 30, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 30, 2019 Finally finished! RMweb Premium Barry O Posted September 21, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 21, 2019 A few wagons being worked on currently. Does anyone know what this is a representation of? At a guess, I think it may be modified to resemble to the Shock version of the Palvan (Palshocvan) as the upright angles have been cut short and the doors don't have the deep framing. Really the body would need shortening slightly to get close to accurate, though demounted and used as a grounded body you could probably get away with a much simpler conversion. Several pictures on Paul Bartlett's site (including one as a grounded body).

RMweb Premium Barry O Posted September 22, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 22, 2019 It is a quick conversion. It is not 100% accurate but will do as a layout wagon which is different to a normal Palvan. I did change the ends but decided trying to cutilise a small slice out of both sides would cause lots of work si left the body as is apart from new ends, new door detail, new buffers etc. How many Palvan Shock models have you seen on 00 layouts? RMweb Premium Barry O Posted October 22, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 22, 2019 The three ex LMS Blood and Custard Coaches (2 TOs and one CK) all ran well on Shap. One of the freight trains needed an ex L&Y Van. I found a MAJ kit for one of these and have finished it (still needs weathering) and it too ran all weekend on Shap at Hartlepool Show.
