I had a very frustrating evening yesterday trying to line my C65 using Pressfix lining. It's a long time since I've done any lining but I just couldn't get the line below the windows to sit smooth and straight (the cantrail line isn't too bad). Normally I'd do the lining before fitting door furniture and so on but that wasn't possible as this is only a repaint. Even applying the transfers 3 inches at a time didn't make it but better. Any tips?

If I can't get it right I think I'll strip the transfers off and go back to the good old ruling pen.

I still line with a bowpen. I can't get on with lining decals..the modelmasters ones seem to work as good as any.

I do use acrylics as you can get a finer line and it doesn't bloom like humbrol can.

Thanks. A few minutes work with a blunt cocktail stick and some Carr's Transfix (GBP 1.17 from Dick Buckley's. Gawd knows how long ago that was...) this evening has got them into a state where I'm comfortable to leave them as they are, although they're by no means perfect due to the underlying condition of the coach itself. As I said on my own topic, a lot of work was put in by whoever built these coaches but sadly not all of the highest quality.

I'll leave them to harden off overnight, then clean off the gum residue and number the coach ready for varnishing.

PS I struggle with Modelmasters. I never seem to be able to get rid of the film "shadow".

Nice to see the results of your labours; I too have been building up a fleet of ex LMS vehicles for use on Hest Bank.

Yes, Barry, I confess that I too have had problems with some lining transfers. Some of the waterslide ones (Name withheld) went on in about 6 different pieces! Others were better but there were still occasional glitches.

I too resorted to using a bow pen; two times out of 3 they were fine, but I have one or two where the lines got distinctly blotchy so draw a veil over them (or turn the coach round so you can't see it!)

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Terry

Look at them from an "embankment" distance..say a good foot away.  Do you notice any blotches...no..well that is fine..if yes even I set off to try and sort them..

My problem is. .I have too many coaches for Barnbow. But some are used on Herculaneum Dock, some on Shap and a fair few on Chapel en le  Frith (Central). And I do like LMS coaches.

Hi Barry

I appreciate the words of comfort. They very much chime with one of my old fellow members of the Wolverhampton club who invented (I think) the expression "stand off scale", by which he meant that if you couldn't see it at normal viewing distance, it didn't matter. And in these days when I need slightly more powerful specs to see what I'm doing, things are becoming less critical.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing future coaching stock (ex-LMS) from the Oliver stables.

After working my way through all of these coaches....I have been catching up with some locos.

I bought some locos pre-built...

A recent EBay acquisition, A kit built (westward) jinty. As delivered the crankpins were set up so that the chassis only worked when the body was not fitted.

123235318_Jinty47320otherside.JPG.555c712ddbccd6607b828adf726351bb.JPG

It is now a Brunswick loco. A coat of weathering should get rid of the shabby paintwork look.

Wills 4F

10149818_4F44007withtendercab.JPG.27fcd03f21bbff9730b458a626097417.JPG

arrived sans motor and gears but with the tender cab. It has a nickel silver compensated chassis. I have fitted a High Level gearbox and a small motor from China. Something different with the early tender fitted with an etched cab. A Skipton loco to visit Barnbow East.

DJH WD

131936137_DJHWD90464.JPG.6d9d125015ac3e35aeeb9d8165016018.JPG

This had its original motor and gears (a D13 I believe). This also now has a High Level Gearbox and has a longer Chinese motor. It too will get a lot of weathering.. although I may change its number as it was out of Service at Sutton Oak.

255452169_ModelLocoBlack5plain.JPG.bb421e3eae77aa333f0c4e161e513635.JPG

Modle Loco Black 5. This had a Portescap fitted which had a seized gearbox. Lots of work has been done on this and eventually it has started to run. It was in LMS lined Black. Will be turned into a BR lined Black one. As will

1823096960_ModellocoBlack5withLMSemblem.JPG.c1f11762562c81532a77346065e9515c.JPG

I have some repair work required on the paintwork. I want it to look like the LMS has been either painted over or removed. It too had a totally seized portescap. This one took a lot of work to get it to move. Someone had added some form of grease (Axle?) which just did not want to ocme off.

It too will be finished in BR lined black.

The Black 5s have taken a while to get to wok. The remotored locos were done today...

now for a lie don!

Can you tell us a little more about the small Chinese motors please? How do they need to be adapted to take the gearboxes? How well do they perform? And, where do you get them from?

Thanks.

I get them from EBay.. CCT transfers sell a similar small motor (Mitsui).. that one can be screwed onto a high level gearbox. BUT it goes on at a 45 degree angle. Luckily this easily fits into a Will 4F,

The longer ones I also sourced from China through EBay. They have no screw (or any form of fastening)  holes in them so..after advice from Mike Edge, I solder them onto the gearbox. I didn't think that would work for me (unlike Mike I am just a muddling modeller) but it does.

I will get some photos tomorrow all being well.. I have another 4F to remotor...

The Mitsumi

this does have screw holes for fastening it to gearboxes

But at an angle.

It does fit the high level gearboxes easily

a WIlls 4F fitted together today

This is the "long" motor

and soldered to the High Level Gearbox

and I do have a mega motor. It is in black ..and seems to have Neodinium magnets ( not used this one yet!)

I may need to grind off some of the coating as..

Look! No screws!!

Hope this helps!

Two more pre-owned locos remotored today.. the Mitsumi and High Level Gearbox fitted into a Wills 4F (well built but the paintwork needs a lot of work)

and with the body on..

does it go better with a high sided tender?  44602 had one when shedded at Bolton. Tender etch from Innocentman.45102435_4Fwithhighsidedtender.JPG.d11ea2a0f9168b8f3e5c62166a0533b0.JPG

and a DJH Standard 3MT Mogul

I do like the high-sided tender. Not something you see modelled very often.

I don't like it with the 4F. Small locos need small tenders, big engines need big tenders. That's why I don't like Jubilees with Fowler tenders or Castles with 3,500 gallon tenders.

Baz, where did you get the black 'mega motor' from and what size is it please.

EBay purchase direct from China. I will measure it later. It has realy powerful magnets...a bit big for 4mm but I have an Ankle 2 and an A1 (DJH kits) which it may fit in.

The small numbers are wrong, this size was very rarely used, they should be the same as the ones on the 4F.

I can usually work out your "fat finger" or "predictive text" typos but "Ankle 2" has beaten me.

It has the look of a Hornby X9108 motor as fitted to the Britannia, Clan, 8F, King and others; albeit the worm is fitted at the end with the electrical connectors. No longer available as spare. I think many were used to upgrade the motor in the Hornby P2.

If Hornby fitted one of these it would work wonders for the performance. I guess it has neodinium magnets.

It certainly looks a bit different with the high sided tender. Is there any scope to remove what looks like splasher beading to make it a proper LMS 4F?
