Jinty's WB for 7mm

The Ivatt Class 2, 2-6-2t has visited me from West Kirby Town to have a couple of bits done to it.

Firstly it was fitted out with a Zimo MX645R and a twin speaker system, replacing the ESU that was fitted prior.

Secondly I have made up a mounting bracket, as near to the real thing as I could, so that the 'Welsh Dragon' headboard could be fitted when required. This was made up from brass section, soldered together and filed to shape in certain areas such as the extra lamp irons on the ends of the frame. All painted black and fitted.

Once that was all done, I've attacked the loco with the weathering bits and bobs and tried to have some restraint in showing her as a cared for, but in service, preserved locomotive. This aspect was more difficult to do than heavily weathering a loco in my opinion, severe restraint had to be called for. The sides of the tanks and the boiler sides are finished with a satin sheen to show a cared for loco, other places such as the top of the firebox was given a gentle dusting of powders and sealed in place with a sealing medium. A gentle airbrushing of road dirt was applied around the chassis and wheel areas, and some slight rusting shown in applicable areas. Oil stains and wet areas were highlighted as was the edge of the steps and footplate where engine men would tread.

Here are a few pictures:

The next little item on my WB is this Dapol 5 plank wagon that I've been experimenting with in some different techniques.

I've created some damage to the angle iron either side of the door on one side and represented one of the door guards broken off. I used my small hot air gun off my soldering station to create the bent angle iron, and then rusted it accordingly.

Again, some pictures:

It is only when getting up real close that the muck becomes obvious on heritage locos. Having seen the Mickey Mouse 2-6-2T model first hand last weekend, I think you have made an excellent job when one considers weathering to preserved condition is usually a case of minimalism. That wagon weathering is a marvel of modelling. You must have some patience!

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Sorry about the gratuitous photos but we had some nice sunshine this morning, so I thought it would be rude not to....................................

Jinty, the wagon photos in the sun remind me of a scene long ago when I lived in Texas. Old box cars and gondolas were stored on an abandoned line between Houston and Victoria. The line ran alongside Highway 59 for miles and the string of freight cars all resembled your state of weathering on the 5 plank. Of course it should probably be said that your effort resembled the 1:1 scale wagons, not the other way round.

Your work, as well as others’, are slowly converting me to the need to weather my kit built locos beyond that ex-works look. Whether I would ever weather my Lee Marsh Jubilee is another story!

Slight derail.  What the heck is this "steam hammer" looking thing next to the smokebox?  Theres one on both sides, and appears to be some apparatus that does something with the exhaust steam before it departs the stack, but I've got no clue.

Auto Vacuum equipment for push & pull working of specially equipped coaches. It started to replace mechanical rod equipment on the LMS and LNER in the mid 1930's. Some coaches retained mechanical equipment into the early 1950's. Locos with superheater had the auto vac equipment both sides of smokebox.

The SR and GWR had their own systems and there was another system on the L&Y which the LMS kept on a small handful of 2-4-2T's and coaches until circa 1953 for a line near Blackpool.

How well does the Mickey Mouse run? Is the driving wheelbase rigid?

Hi Chris,

The Ivatt 2-6-2t runs very well actually, there is some side play in the chassis but only really on the middle and rear drivers, obviously the front is quite rigid to clear the slide bars.

I think it would benefit from a little bit of compensation on the middle axle, maybe similar to Jazz's spring steel pushing down on the bearing in an elongated slot type of affair.

  • 3 weeks later...

Down on page 3 eh???

Anyway, I've had a couple of days re-modelling my workbench to make it more useable.

I've also been fettling this BR blue class 25/1, as 5202.

I've straightened the buffer beams and she's fitted with a Zimo MX696S & adaptor board and twin bass reflex speakers.

Marker and tail lights are directional and I've fitted it with cab lights too.

Weathered as an 'in service' loco, just needing a bit of a wash!!!

Here are a few photos.............................

A few other things can now get dealt with, now that the workbench is clear and ready for work!!!!!
