A Cartoon of Helston(ish)

Well I'm running out of, up to date, pics, so the might be another

hiatus coming! For all the good reasons, that generally progress

is being made, but it is both slow, and cross a number of fronts.

For example the station/platform are off the layout, and whilst

not in the ideal position, can be worked on. Yesterday, most or

the drains got laid, and some fencing erected. However this

entailed time out to get the reference book out, which seemed

to show 2 different set-ups at the up end. I worked out how to

get the best compromise. Then realised that the gate position

didn't leave room for the running in board, on either side. A

compromise was found by extending one side, and moving a

mess room (shed) marginally nearer to the old foot-warmer

shed.

DSC_1278.JPG.afe89bbf50af569ad62f5da1512aac89.JPG

That gave me an excuse to use a similar pic to previously published copies.

Here the foot-warmer hut is brick built, on the platform, next to the Choc /

Cream Mk1 restaurant coach. The mess room, is off the platform, but is

the wooden building next to the signal box.

The 94XX has been airbrushed black, and had it'd missing footstep

and chimney cap re- affixed. And I am quite pleased with how this has

covered most of my errors quite well (I think). But there will probably

be no more pics, until I think it's finished.

The barren triangle opposite the crossing keepers cottage, is filling up,

must be an early Spring in Helstonish. again no pics 'til it's "finished".

So to end today's missive  another rural shot, of the peaceful fields,

between trains, just up the line from Helstonish.

This evening I grabbed a few minutes to give the new little

camera another try.

I rigged up a mount on a Hornby Dublo container flat, to be

pushed in front of a loco. That passed through the bridge,

but didn't quite clear the tunnel roof. Although that could

be sorted, if it works ok.

A video taken, forward and back seemed ok but was upside

down!

I then stopped the train every so often, and clicked a few stills.

Some didn't come out, but by chance I did turn the camera right

way up. (So I could get to the buttons.)

Here are a couple.

First re-entering the station (If it was there).

PHO00023.JPG.fb7244720cbef8647b12f08f373dd6ab.JPG

and the end of the line.

PHO00025.JPG.dae9c91a631df973334084b23640a103.JPG

Not the greatest pics, but they are views not possible with the DSLR.

And potentially get closer, broader views. But I suspect may need

some enhanced lighting.

Do you think it's worth persisting?

I am part way through a photo session, but just had to recharge

the camera for a second time!

However, I thought I would share a couple with my regulars, now.

'cos I am quite pleased with where we've got to with some of our

recent scenics.

Remember the bare triangle?  Looks a bit different now, but overall

this bit of the layout is much more Forest of Dean, but not unknown

in Cornwall either.

This was what was behind the BR Brake

DSC_1226.JPG.bef9b1d621c17eaf3e489b73fb6a970d.JPG

He's still wondering where they've hidden his lorry!

It's good to see this BRS idea hasn't caught on. Clearly the folk

of Helstonish still send their goods by rail.

DSC_1287.JPG.9206d1aa17b2cc8c6d80bf0caec7cab3.JPG

This does also show the undergrowth that has grown since lockdown. Along with

the field extension.

I'm much happier with the effect of this end of the layout. So will be taking some

more pics later. (After all ! only downloaded 57 yesterday). Must remember to

take the loco couplings off, and find some lamps. (Forgot yesterday).

p.s. Thanks for the reactions to yesterdays post.

I like that a lot. A very familiar looking level crossing keepers house too!

Thanks Rob.

The aim all along has been to re-create an iconic Ben Ashworth pic.

At last I think we at the point of achieving that. Bar the addition of a few

details, there's not too much more to do. But it's not easy to get people,

and chickens, when there are no shows etc. I've also yet to actually

work out how to create the chicken pen.

However these are not key to reproducing that shot.

Yesterdays photos were some of the best I've managed, but there are

detail deficiencies. So I aim to have another go tomorrow.

The key is having got the setting more balanced, and right, I now have

to spot the deficiencies created by the location, through the camera

screen.

So here are a couple more, without compromising the shot we are

looking for.

The mail move's off from the crossing keepers house. And heads for Greendale.

More soon.

Well I've bitten the bullet, and posted Sodley Cottage on the

realistic modelling thread.

Never thought that would happen.

I will put copies of those pics here in a day or two, for the record.

However, here are a couple of others, for my regular supporters,

with thanks.

Hi

Tony

Those two pictures are really good, especially the second one with the Pannier as part of the scene & not dominating it.....

Keep up the good work....

Thanks Bill for your comments.

It sometimes feels like it's taken a long time working towards

this, but It feels worth it now. Still a cartoon, but I like it.

Here are a couple more pics I think you might like.

Again more train in the landscape, I think.

Includes Dan Beechworth, one of the local photographers.

And more like what I've always said is the best view of the layout,

from outside the room. Although in this instance the low level

perspective gives depth to the new corner, rather than a view

across the whole.

1965499938_DSC_1359(2).JPG.1e6053a3adbd2757447ef3b1e53e31f4.JPG

If I've not got one, yet, I will take an updated version of this view, from

a higher level.

More will follow, no doubt.

For the record - these are the pics I put in the realistic modelling thread.

So far there has been 23 "likes" etc, which is better than I expected,

especially with a different audience.

Trouble is although I have taken some of the best pics to date, in the

past week, I'm struggling to find any more to back these up with.

They are either too similar, or have points which detract from the

realistic bit.

On the other hand it will mean I've more to share here amongst

friends.

So more to follow.

For this morning we find a prairie on the am down goods, just crossing the

unclassified road at Sodley.

Not visible in the above pic, but present centre top, is this guy.

DSC_1283.JPG.6ef215f52ade0a9f2aee7b16dab7b805.JPG

Some say it's the detail that counts, and so this is evidence that it's there, but

you do have to look for it. His mate is present too, but has hidden from the

camera, behind the foliage.

Over the last 2 evenings I've written and illustrated a piece for the club website.

Covering the redevelopment of this corner section of the layout. Only to find

it's too big to send as an e-mail attachment. Doh!

All the best

Sorry I missed out yesterday, so a couple of pics and a quick update for today.

Think you might like this one Bill.

Also here is one to show status of the 94XX. Currently awaiting either a coat of

matt varnish, or some weathering then varnish. Both are dependent on some

better weather. It's been either too cold, or too wet, and I daren't even hint that

should do either indoors.

Hi Tony

Yes I do like it..... Very nice indeed....

I take it the yellow flags on the 94xx are a forerunner of wasp stripes.....Ha Ha......

Thanks to all for the responses of late, and welcome to those who have

newly wandered this way. I have seen the notifications ticking up.

Now some may recall I was dabbling with drawing in inkscape. Well I decided

that, although the cutter is on the back burner, I could design my own "kit".

As in something that could be printed out, and stuck on card. For

reproducible basic buildings. I reconned that should be doable, as I didn't

need to worry about cutting paths.

So a pair of basic cottages were drawn out, and come to printing, half of

the lines were missing. Now I could understand that I might have the format,

or similar, wrong. BUT part of the plan had 3 concentic rectangles, each of

which had been drawn with the "box" tool. But what came out was a section

of the top and left hand side, the other 3/4 was missing. I can't work out

any logic to explain this, let alone work out how to correct it. To rub salt in,

I can copy the whole diagram, and paste to libre office (= word), which then

prints complete (if marginally smaller).

Any ideas?

In recompense a couple more recent pics

Bit of a diversion this morning.

I noticed that one of the local photographers was about.

Gwillam Prouse, a local farmer, who likes to slip away for a bit of breakfast

after milking. And on a nice day to photograph a morning train, or two.

Here we see his tractor parked safely off the road, leading back to Sodley

Crossing.

110795928_DSC_1294(2).JPG.adbdcb2e14b81790541b44da09a30fb4.JPG

Of course being a farmer he can access some more unusual locations. And he is quite well known to

the lines staff, which gives him access lineside also.

And here a view of the camera he uses, on such occasions.

Pretty much a (digital) Box Brownie.

More soon, I hope. Keep smiling,

Sorry missed a few days. I thought the pics were getting a bit samey, being either from the

practise set, or "THE" picture shoot. But also 'cos bits of mudlling were being done.

I have, in effect, produced my first building kit.  i.e. I drew it in inkscape, printed out, and

pasted it to mountboard. Then cut / built, the small generic cottage. (Well it's still being

built, but you know what I mean).

Here's the start, i.e. the kit.

DSC_1372.JPG.7b090b5236b1114b509f99bc5df918fc.JPG

I have a number of changes, yet to make, to the drawings. As there were a few, small, discrepancies.

Also, the nice tidy grids, didn't readily cut into regular lintels or sills. Also, if I'm honest, the roof is a bit

too flat, especially as it's going to be thatched (I hope).

The station is also now re-dressed, and re-installed, so I'll try and put up a spot the difference, when I

can find a suitable "before" pic.

Also managed to get one of the photographers to capture a more recent working, although it's

a bit of a time warped effort. Maroon colletts, behind a green 25. I don't think the Western had 25's

before about the early 70's, and by then I doubt there was anything in maroon, let alone collets.

Never mind, please treat as a dream, not a nightmare.

Good morning all.

For starters today, another view of the station, this time the South end, with  a train due

drekley. although there does seem to be one (lady) passenger about to leave. She's

giving up her ticket, and another porter is carrying her bags to the car. Must have

stopped for refreshments, on arrival.

DSC_1378.JPG.616dcad29a56fd94c76662ce33b76361.JPG

The cottage build continues, but I seem to have missed some pics. I've used some windows

from fair price models. Pretty good, but they did bow when drying, which makes them tricky

to seat correctly.  This was compounded by my kit cutouts being a little oversize. I have, I think,

adjusted the inkscape drawing. And I will use these windows again, but will keep them flat whilst

assembling.

Have started on the thatch, but at the moment looks like it's been through lockdown. But it

makes me feel at home.

The train pending, above, has reached sodlley crossing. Gwillam Prouse was a bit late, so

grabbed a distant shot, from the top meadow.

DSC_1389.JPG.ed4e875737500fa25aa2e7f9e4ad3c15.JPG

Another new development ould mean this is your last sighting of the bookshelves.

Another view of the South End of the station, which for many would be the main entrance / exit.

DSC_1383.JPG.be81258abec987ab4472fcc842e2991b.JPG

And the Down excursion, pushes its way into the station yard, passing the shed.

DSC_1390.JPG.4db84ee29b9c4e09f00d2801349c91cb.JPG

The cottage build has been held up. Seemingly it takes a long time for all that wet hair, to set.

(The Pendon booklet did say to use plenty of PVA). For once I both read, and followed instructions.

The thatch has made it all look very flat, at this stage. So I'm hoping I've got some of my mothers

genes (she was a hairdresser), and can get some shape to it. When dry!
