Aldersgate buildings 10 Zetland House

Recommended Posts

Here he goes again, next up a typical warehouse factory from the Liverpool Street/Farringdon area in London.  I pass it every week walking from Liverpool Street to Old Street.  I should have more time soon to dedicate to modelling.  Work is definitely ......"the curse of the drinking classes." "Zealand House, 5-25 Scruton St London EC2A 4HJ

Zetland House is a unique and striking property, situated in the heart of Shoreditch.

The building was originally a Print Works for The Bank of England.

Today, it has been refurbished with modern businesses in mind, whilst maintaining its existing structure and original period features."

It's a home to start ups and creative types so no one minds you walking about and taking shots and measurements.

I'll probably do a potted version because it's actually huge!

Watch this space..

That reminds me - after its redevelopment in 1991, I was asked to take some photos of Liverpool Street Station and its surroundings to show my father what it looked like. He was housebound by then and couldn't get there himself. I made a quick lunch-hour visit, from my work in Southwark and made up an album of photos for him. It is one of the few parts of his railway photo archive that I still haven't scanned and uploaded to my pages on the ipernity photo-sharing site. So thanks for the reminder.

I did look through the photos but didn't have any of the Aldersgate building.

For those curious about progress, not much has happened.  I have been loitering around the prototype taking some measurements (and forgetting others so I'll need to go back, again!).

I am trying to do most things on the computer but I still need to get a feel of the dimensions with a freehand study.  This is as far as I have got but mojo has returned.

That's a pretty big building, with an awful lot of glass in it.

Mmmmm yep, see below.

The building is two wings with an inner courtyard.  In the "original" (this isn't a proper copy of a prototype) the courtyard is fully enclosed.  I am going to try to come up with a solution where one can see in but still have an impressive central entrance joining the two wings.  I haven't work that one out yet!

The first wing has its roof and internals done but still needs a lot of detail.  I sealed it up and then realised that the windows open the wrong way!

The night before we went on Eurostar we stayed in London over night, on the journey into Liverpool Street and the open sections of the circle line plus the view from our window at the Hotel (which overlooked both the circle and BR lines)  all showed how the railway is surrounded by old high rise buildings, which your models cleverly replicate.
