JAMO
Now it's time to add sound to the Alco: I love the Alco 539T (and else) clung. I've just bought a Loksound V5L sound decoder and its adapter from ESU. The installation to follow...

Boxcab
That sounds absolutely wonderful. I have the same sound file in a V4 L for my S2 that I am working on. The V5 wasn't around when I started on mine.

jasond
Nice pic Jack. What we can do if we don't have enough matching parts for a project ... mix the steps this time. Oh, and the necessary height difference for head clearance above the steps. Jason

RMweb Premium Northroader Posted November 23, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 23, 2021 I think it’s needs must, the bogies aren’t the same distance from the ends, so there’s no clearance for a set of proper steps at the one end. 1
JAMO
Yes a nice disimmetry of the ends. And with Arch Bar trucks, it'll be better.

In which case I'd have thought it was the right hand side that would need the type of steps that are fitted at the left hand side? It's a dodgy 'cut-n-shut' job by anyone's measure!! I note there looks to be extra metal bracing plates on the left side, maybe to add support for the truck pivot, which isn't directly under the bodyside bracing like the right hand truck is.
JAMO
Hello there! By theses days, I've started to modify one of my Weaver PS-2 covered hopper with fine grab irons. This is a lot of work but the result looks better than the original plastic thick mouldings. I use 0,6 mm blackened wire. It's strong enough to resist and fine for the eyes. 8
F-UnitMad
Good job! I need to do that on my Weaver hopper.
JAMO
My "problem" is: I have a dozen of similar cars to upgrade and it's a long job. I have to find a solution to make these grab irons faster
JAMO
A little trick about how to straight the wire: I just use a wooden stick for ice cream to roll on the wire. The result is interesting: I've finished to make the grab irons on Yesterday. After that, I've protected some areas against the paint. 1
stewartingram
Put one end in the vice. Hold the other end with pliers, and pull - hard. That will straighten it.

It gives me an idea! I go to make a jig with the help of a piece of hardwood like some beech or oak.
JAMO
The body before painting... And after... The Tamiya colour isn't bad. I'm glad with the result The weathering will help me more. Now, I have to find photos of the braking system to upgrade the Weaver one. What Tamiya colour are you using? Also, spray or bottle? It looks really good for a mineral red colour. My brain is already ticking over. And as to the jigs and such, you can make them out of 60 or 80 thou plasticard. Anything thick enough to allow you to bend them up. Car looks fantastic by the way. The Tamiya paint is a "red oxyde primer for plastic and metal" spray . Military modellers use it as a realistic tank anti-rust paint. A thick plasticard jig can be easy to make and enough hard to resist to the use. Thank you. Good idea.
F-UnitMad
I did this boxcar with red oxide primer, not a bad match to the real thing.
