DavidB Posted October 27, 2016 Share Posted October 27, 2016 The latest edition of Garden Rail magazine has a piece drawing attention to the Garden Railways sub-forum and encouraging people to make use of it. So here is a small update on one of my latest projects, which is a 7-car rake of modern WHR coaches in 16mm scale. The coaches come from various sources - replica car 24 is from a slimmed-down IP Engineering wooden kit, while the two 42 foot saloons are Garden Railway Specialists resin kits. The 39 foot saloon and service car 2010 are cut-and-shut GRS kits, while semi-open 2021 is scratchbuilt. The latest addition is observation car Glaslyn, which I am building from a Worsley Works set of etchings that were blown up from 4mm for me by Allen Doherty. The etchings for the curved end went together very easily, with minimal fettling needed. It rides on GRS whitemetal bogies with brass bearings, and is a good match for the other cars. The next big challenges will be the painting and lining, the creation of the interior and the glazing of the end. Anyone who knows the prototype will understand why I'm putting all of those tasks off at the moment and building some FR Barns and Superbarns instead! DavidB Posted October 28, 2016 Author Share Posted October 28, 2016 From the same WHR rake, but in a slightly less green environment, here are semi-open car 2021 and replica NWNGR car 24. Car 2021 is scratchbuilt, using a brass frame and plasticard panelling. Like Glaslyn, it rides on cast white metal archbar bogies from Garden Railway Specialists. The seats and tray tables were a bit of a labour of love, but they are a very characteristic feature of the real thing. Car 24 is from an IP Engineering kit. For some reason this was 8mm too wide, so had to be slimmed down. It runs on IP's wooden bogies with heavy metal wheels from GRS - as a former 4mm and 7mm modeller, I was originally appalled at the thought of wooden bogies, but in reality these are the smoothest and most free-running of all my many different types of 16mm bogies. Door bump stops are household pins. I'm hoping that my wife doesn't notice the use of her kitchen work surface, but it's easier to photograph these big beasts there than in the workshop. The latter in particular looks most impressive and I await with interest to see the completed vehicle. The Barns and Superbarns also sound most interesting, I hope you will keep us posted.
