Thanks number6, its fascinating the things I've learned about these remarkable units. The way the BR Southern tried to re-use and recycle the stock it had available to it, such as passenger units, de-icers and service vehicles is just incredible. It was truly an age of intercompatibility!

It seems only natural now that the 6REP is finished that work begins on the successor, 5WES.

post-20061-0-58934300-1489405025_thumb.jpg

I built it back in 2006 with very limited skills, time and resources so I've wanted to go back and revisit it for some time now. Working on one vehicle at a time, I'm stripping each coach back to the basics and replacing some components, rebuilding some elements and repainting to a higher standard.

First up is the Driving Trailer First

post-20061-0-87113300-1489405006_thumb.jpg

The original Hurst cab has been completely replaced with a 3D printed one from eBay. After some minor modifications to the Jumper Cable boxes and lighting panels, it's come out to look pretty much like the real thing.

post-20061-0-59159100-1489405044_thumb.jpg

Using the Lima Mk3s as a base, the bodyshell has been adapted with plug doors, roof corrections and a fair amount of filling work to ensure its a true representation. With the paintjob now done, I'm moving onto lighting and interiors before I restore the laser glazing.

Lighting coming along.

post-20061-0-43204400-1489668142_thumb.jpg

Mini LEDs from Express Models are fantastic

post-20061-0-74025200-1489668162_thumb.jpg

need to secure them and eradicate the bleeding

post-20061-0-16444500-1489668179_thumb.jpg

Fiddly but effective. The Mk3 underframes are fantastic for hiding all the electronics.

Internal lighting next once the interiors are complete

After waiting a fair while, a project I've wanted to do for 2 years now was build a class 319/1. Bratchell Models have been undergoing some manufacturing changes so having received my kit after some delay, I'm building it "undecorated" instead. Last night I put together the bodyshells for 3 of the 4 vehicles.

post-20061-0-66881900-1490267311_thumb.jpg

I already have the motor, bogies and pantograph which all fit well.

post-20061-0-73851500-1490267325_thumb.jpg

The cab is clear plastic and as i want working headlights, I have had to cut out the original fitting and insert solid precut light fittings to prevent bleeding.

post-20061-0-98806600-1490267340_thumb.jpg

They seem to work a treat. I'll also need to cut out part of the skirt to fit in the coupling.

post-20061-0-04509500-1490267353_thumb.jpg

The unit is brilliantly produced so I'm really pleased to finally be building it although I am having to complete my 5WES upgrade alongside it due to poor timing but it's all good fun.

Built the PMS last night...

post-20061-0-93962900-1490863586_thumb.jpg

Wasn't overly happy with the supplied undercarriage components so I scratched my own following the diagrams supplied and a few pics from SEMG Online website.

post-20061-0-07311600-1490863609_thumb.jpg

The bogies were adapted from Hornby Sprinter bogies to provide lighting inside and interior is prepp'd for seating

post-20061-0-99988600-1490863544_thumb.jpg

The Pantograph will need additional parts added too

Multi-directional headlights kit from Express Models fitted

post-20061-0-01404700-1492592724_thumb.jpg

The kit is designed for a Lima Class 156

post-20061-0-98901500-1492592746_thumb.jpg

but fits perfectly using the white plasticard headlight surrounds which will prevent light bleeding

post-20061-0-16693300-1492592763_thumb.jpg

Just the interior lighting to install but I'll do that once the unit is painted

post-20061-0-95939000-1492592780_thumb.jpg

Next stop, priming! It's going to be 319186 in this weathered state.

Lighting to complete on the interior

post-20061-0-42286500-1493740875_thumb.jpg

followed by some tweaking on the vestibule door (the door backing is too high)

post-20061-0-48221300-1493740892_thumb.jpg

and restoring all the glazing.

post-20061-0-00038800-1493740908_thumb.jpg

Started painting the cabs on 319 with the first coat going on last week

post-20061-0-64373400-1493740927_thumb.jpg

to be followed by the NSE stripes next week.

post-20061-0-85582600-1493740945_thumb.jpg

And for the first time, it is actually starting to resemble the real thing!!!

post-20061-0-40828700-1494842443_thumb.jpg

This coach is almost complete, just need to seal the roof and add mild weathering.

post-20061-0-04633500-1494841978_thumb.jpg

319 had running tests at NSE Latchmere and runs really well on it's Hornby motor completing all inclines and crossovers smoothly.

Paint job has begun with cabs and NSE blue in progress.

post-20061-0-73408600-1494842586_thumb.jpg

Even managed to give the Eurostar test train a run although I haven't yet built the 6TC in Departmental/NSE livery

(it's next on my to do list with all components ready and sat in a box and nagging me to get started on regularly, lol).

Very jealous of your Wessex. I had to use vinyl overlays for the livery as at the time I couldn't paint NSE livery. Think I need to revisit the thing

It's a slow process that takes a lot of tweaking so I'm working on it around all my other projects.

That said, I'm starting on upgrading the other driving trailer (current look below) very soon so updates on that to follow

post-20061-0-92881800-1495616431_thumb.jpg

Yes, the Wessie is stunning. Great job on the Eddie Pond murals.

Thanks, it great to be able to actually see them now :)

Did you paint your own rendition of those Eddie Ponds or use a photo? Weren't they signed Edward Pond on some of the posher routes?!

You never said how you formed the windscreens...

I printed them from versions i found on the internet. There's not that many but enough to do one unit. Each unit I believe was fairly bespoke in that regards but I have found enough so each coach has it's own. I literally printed them off in colour and "wallpapered" them in.

post-20061-0-86756300-1495642158.jpg

post-20061-0-25806000-1495642178.jpg

The windscreens were a proper Blue Peter job as the acetate i used on the original was too thin and crumpled and the thicker stuff when folded for the curve, went pale white so i cut up a Tonic Water bottle and used that. It is the perfect thickness so i was able to fold over a 2mm section and get the curve perfectly. Then i just applied a rim around the edge to blend it to the unit and hide the glued edges. It looks way better than the original and with wipers, looks pretty authentic.

I believe it depended on the age of the mural - they started with "Edward Pond Associates", then gradually morphed into "Eddie Pond"

319/1 Progress update...

post-20061-0-12174700-1497285242_thumb.jpg

Paint job coming along well now with one side on all four coaches completed and the other side almost done.

post-20061-0-46348900-1497285263_thumb.jpg

Roofs and inner ends yet to paint

post-20061-0-79531300-1497285279_thumb.jpg

Still have some paint job tweaking to complete followed by decals and varnishing.

post-20061-0-58733200-1497285299_thumb.jpg

Then it's glazing, interiors, lighting and all the detailing to do which is the bit i enjoy the most.

post-20061-0-56610200-1497285314_thumb.jpg

The weathering will be fun as I'm basing it on 319186, the unit below...
