80's Scotrail services

Hi all,

I am currently building a new layout based on my childhood layout which had a Scottish theme back in the mid 80's.

I am interested to know whether anyone has any recollection of Dundee to Edinburgh services or similar (Arbroth/Perth etc..) which used ScotRail liveried mk2's in 86/87 hauled by class 26/27's ?

I only ask because I took a pic in 86' of 47604 on an Edinburgh to Dundee service with at least one scotrail liveried coach in the consist. Surprisingly the web/Flickr has been fruitless, plenty of 27's but stock is all blue and grey.

I have several Regional Railway mk2's to convert to Scotrail, but I don't think full rakes were ever on the scene, if not, perhaps a swap for more blue and grey if anyone is after Regional Railways stock?!

Many thanks

Mike

Please bear with me on this.

From the winter of 1986 the hourly Dundee services went over to DMUs.

Going forward in time, during the winter of 1987/88 there was one diagram that used some of the ScotRail Mk2z stock on a regular basis:

0710 Perth - Edinburgh

1330 Edinburgh - Glasgow

1500 Glasgow - Edinburgh

1713 Edinburgh to Dundee

Although booked for a push-pull 47, the 0710 and 1713 were not push-pull workings and the DBSO was normally left off the rake (FK, TSOT, BSO, 2 TSO). The TSOs were the Mk2z stock in ScotRail, the BSO was normally 9440 (a Mk2c in Blue and Grey), the TSOT tended to be 6605 in ScotRail and the FK was booked as one of the two Blue and Grey Mk2a vehicles but 13588 (a Mk2D FK in InterCity executive livery) has also been noted.

Back to the winter of 1986, the 0710 Perth - Edinburgh and the 1715 Edinburgh to Dundee were booked as loco hauled. These services may well have used the same rake which, again I am guessing, may have used some of the spare Mk2z stock. The 0710 was booked for a 47/7 but the 1715 was booked for an Inverness 47/4. This may well be the service you have a photo of.

The following photo on flickr states 1988 but all the 27s were withdrawn by 1987, this also may well be the 1715 Edinburgh - Dundee service:

(Mk2c BSO, 2 Mk2a TSO, Mk2z TSO).

Brilliant, just the pic I was looking for but like you say more likely to be 1986! My pic of 47604 was on the 2nd April 86' and there were still a handful of 27's kicking about on the Dundee's but mainly 47's, I encountered a number of 27's myself in the summer of 86' so was hoping to come across some pic's of mk2a's in ScotRail like the one provided. Many thanks

Bostin' little video here should help! :

Many thanks for the headsup, seen this a few times and no sign of any ScotRail liveried stock unfortunately.

Luckily I kept a combined loco and stock pocket book for 1986 and it shows 6 mk2a's in Scotrail from the beginning of the year so slim chance they were all on the same train!

If memory serves, they were former Edinburgh-Glasgow push-pull stock and, again if my memory is correct (very possibly not!) were used as a scratch 'shove' set with a spare DBSO. I'm fairly sure none of the vacuum brake Edinburgh-Dundee stock received Scotrail livery. Most received Scotrail branding however, as per the video link.

Many thanks, I guess the mk2z in scotrail being hauled by 27052 in the above link is air braked and one of the 6 in scotrail in early 86 and could be found with mk2a's on Dundee services?
