1977joey
Some very atmospheric photo's there Mark, Keep them coming! Enjoy your break, any chance Shrewford will migrate north of the border? I think it would look good with a push/pull set in the platform! Cheers Mark Many thanks Mark , I can't see Shrewford going north of the border as all the stock I have for it is definitely for the London Midland region of BR, although I do have loco no: 47711 'Greyfriars Bobby' so I'll try over the next few days to get a shot of it in the Platform with some air con Mark 2's for you to give the impression of a push pull set . It's been a hectic time since I've got back from Scotland so not had much chance to do anything on the layout.. Cheers, Mark
1977joey
Hi Everyone, A bit more done to the layout. I have edged the board along the track next to Platform 5 with some clear plasticard just in case of a would be derailment. Also added scatter & am yet to tone it down & add vegetation, I'm hoping to do this over the next few days. Today I've also had a bit of a running session, portraying a summer saturday circa 1987. I always loved to run down to Aberystwyth station in the late 80's to look at the 2 extra Class 37 hauled London services, there was one in the morning at 11:12 & one in the afternoon at 15:10 to London Euston with Mark 1 stock, usually the Rasberry ripple Intercity set on the morning one, & the afternoon one produced the Network SouthEast rake that was normally used on the Euston- Northampton service during the week. Some of this activity is depicted here at Shrewford today... 1st a look at the south end of the station showing a 5 car Class 101 set ticking over on the centre road waiting to form the 12:00 to Llandudno. Tyseley are short of sets at the moment so the NSE Class 101 is on loan. A hustle of loco's can be seen on the stabling point. A 2 car Class 150/2 has arrived at platform 5 with a terminating service from Chester A look at the south end of the layout showing where the scatter has been added & the terrace houses now have gardens. Still lots of finishing off needed to this end of the layout. I also want to add porta cabins or huts next to the carriage sidings A class 108 is seen waiting in bay Platform 2 which will form the stopping service to Cardiff Central The 12:19 Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central approaches Platform 5. Class 33's finished on this line in 1986 but with a little modellers licence, they still appear in 1987 sharing these duties with class 47's. passengers board the 13:01 all stations to Cardiff which waits at Platform 2 Next the double headed Class 37's bring in the 12:41 London Euston to Aberystwyth summer saturday only service into Platform 4 in BR Blue & Railfreight liveries. The loco's would have attached to the train at Wolverhampton having taken over from electric traction. On arrival at Shrewford they will be uncoupled & run round the train to take it on to the Cambrian coast The class 33 departs Platform 5 for Cardiff The class 37's stand at Platform 4 while the shunter uncouples them from the train ready for the run round Cheers for now, Mark Edited April 24, 2019 by 1977joey
1977joey
Hi Everyone, No more modelling done this morning but I did play trains & took a few shots ... Sunday morning & Loco's & units can be seen on the stabling point having spent the night at Shrewford A 3 car Class 150/1 Sprinter (With Class 150/2 centre car) approaches Platform 4 with the 11:45 Wolverhampton to Chester service A look down the Platform showing the Sprinter next to a Class 56 which waits on the centre road (Or up & down goods) with a Margam to Dee Marsh steel coil train The 150 then departs Platform 4 where it will go forward to Chester, next stop Gobowen The 56 starts to rev up & follow the 150 up the Chester line Cheers for now, Mark Edited April 24, 2019 by 1977joey
1977joey
Hi Everyone, I've started adding vegetation to the area's that need it, Especially castle hill, tho this is slow in progress as I've been working a lot of late shifts recently. Castle Foregate (The road on which the station front sits) now has a zebra crossing, the lighting posts made from a cotton bud stem & a yellow painted bead on top. I'm yet to purchase more road vehicles & taxi's to populate that area & also the short stay car park next to the main station building. Also had a running session this afternoon, so here's a few pictures I took while playing trains... A shot of the Chester end of the station showing 2 Class 150/1 Sprinters. 150148 is leading a 5 car set & has just arrived at Platform 4 & will reverse with the 13:25 to Birmingham New Street, having originated at Pwllheli just under 4 hours ago. Next to it at Platform 3b is a 2 car set 150114 on the 13:19 to Chester Passengers join the Pwllheli to Birmingham New Street service, showing 150148 in 'revised' provincial livery with a Class 150/2 centre car, & nearest the camera is 150128 in original Provincial light blue livery A little later a Class 33 opens up after departing Platform 5 with the 13:31 to Cardiff Central (ex Manchester Piccadilly) A look at the gardens on the terraced houses at the southern end of the layout, more detailing needs to be done to these Next the station pilot Class 03 is coupled onto a rake of Royal Mail stock, ready to shunt them to Platform 2 to form the 13:58 Parcels service to Bristol Temple Meads A 2 car Class 101 has arrived at 13:44 on Platform 3b from Crewe, this will go back as the 14:05 all stations to Crewe A look down Platform 3 showing the Crewe local & a Pair of out of service Class 108's stand in Platform 1. These form the 14:25 to Wolverhampton a little later. Next the Class 03 eases the Parcels stock ready for the working to Bristol. The Class 25 seen on the extreme left of the shot is being prepared for this train. A couple of Class 20's are approaching Platform 5 ready for a crew change with the Mossend to Llanwern steel coil train A cross section look at the station A look at Castle Foregate, which has had lamp posts added aswell as it's zebra crossing & finally the station front. 1977joey
Hi Everyone, Well after a bit of an absence, i thought it time i revived my thread. I have been working on the revised version of Shrewford after the spare room in which it is housed has benefitted from being redecorated which was much needed, plus the baseboards strengthened after some slight warping. I also felt that the original Platform layout of the real Shrewsbury is what really works best for me in the end, as I've tried a few concepts of this now, none has really worked. Also I've moved the carriage sidings so that they now sit within the station area better using curved points, it's been an expensive game, but worth it in the end. With work getting in the way & life in general, its took almost 4 months to get the track pinned into place after sorting out the baseboards. So here is the revised plan & a couple of pictures showing the rescued buildings & backscene from the previous effort... 1st up is the new Shrewford plan trackwork in place & finally a drawing of mine dating back from 1999 of the first Central Trains liveried Class 158 at Shrewsbury that now hangs above Shrewford cheers for now, Mark Edited April 6, 2018 by 1977joey
1977joey
I thought I'd best describe the operations of the revised plan... The station, loosely based on operations of 80's Shrewsbury will feature 7 platforms, though only 5 are in use with bay platforms 1&2 being disused with the trackwork lifted, only a stub of track will exist into platform 2 which is one of the 2 loco stabling points. Platform 3 can be used for north bound trains aswell as being used for much of the parcels services. The big island Platform features Platform 4 the main up & down Platform, bay Platforms 5 & 6 & also platform 7 for mainly southbound services though this will be operated as Bi directional as operations require...Trains featured here passenger wise are the Provincial Express Marches line services from South wales/South West to Crewe, Manchester & Liverpool, Normally loco hauled, though Stopping services are operated by DMU's or laterly 'Sprinters'. Birmingham/Wolverhampton to Shrewford stopping or semi fast services. The line to Chester via Wrexham & the local service to Crewe operated by DMU's & Class 150 Sprinters, then also the cambrian lines to Aberystwyth & Pwllheli which are exclusively Class 150 Sprinter operated (as was in the late 80's) InterCity services are around every 2 hours to & from London Euston, one of these, 'The Cambrian Coast Express' continues to & from Aberystwyth featuring a class 37. On summer saturdays there are 3 extra Loco hauled services down the Cambrian including 'The Snowdonian' to Pwllheli. With modellers licence I will also run an 'InterCity 125' service between Swansea & York, & have also pinched a Network SouthEast Paddington to Wolverhampton to extend to Shrewford ( giving me an excuse to run a Class 50 when they eventually come out ) Cheers, Mark
1977joey
Hi Everyone, Over the last week or so I've managed to get the platforms constructed. I've always used the metcalf one's as they're solid once done, tho this pack I've not been too impressed with the adesive flagstone platform edging which has been lifting since it's been added on, so will have to glue it down in places. Now all the main work is out the way such as the track plan, track pinned down & platforms are now done, I can start work on the platform canopies. Here is how it looks as of today... A fair way to go before proper train operation can commence.... Cheers, Mark
1977joey
Hi everyone, Well almost a month past since the last update, but slowly & surely I have been constructing the Platform canopies for the north end of the station. This time I've gone for a more complex design, similar to the ready made design available from Metcalf kits, but I wanted a bash at making my own out of thick card & clear plasticard. The design I've gone for is similar to that of the real canopy that covers the real Shrewsbury station at its north end, albeit without the tapered slant towards the edges which would have been too difficult to achieve with these materials.. This was time consuming enough to construct but well worth the effort Here are some pictures of how it looks so far.... Construction begins... I then mark out where I will attach each 'segment' of the new canopy roof The first segment is glued into place ...Followed by more segments... until all segments are on & & the sides made from card & slaters canopy valance are glued on & finally placed onto the layout, some adjustments need to be done to get them properly level The canopy along Platform 3 is yet to be finished Cheers for now Mark
1977joey
Hi Everyone, I've completed Platform 3's canopy this evening so this is now in place on the layout. The next job after these is to add the final details to them & adjust the supports to make them completely level. I also need sort out the area around the station front, resurface it with slab effect card, & box in around the main station building.I then want to get the ballasting done before adding the 'butterfly' style canopy's down the bay platforms..Here are the pictures of Platform 3 canopy now pretty much complete... Cheers, Mark
37038
That canopy is pretty impressive! The new layout looks great - plenty of track, but doesn't look 'squashed' into the space.

Many thanks 37083 I wanted a large station and carriage/DMU sidings in the same space, the curved points helped me achieve that Cheers, Mark Edited June 9, 2018 by 1977joey
1977joey
Hi Everyone,Time for an update, despite the spare room being too hot at the moment, I've managed to crack on with the station platform buildings. I wasn't happy with my previous efforts so decided to purchase the Metcalf Warehouse. I chose this because of it's victorian look & thought about hacking it up & creating my station Platform buildings. The one on the island platform 4 & 7 is big enough to house staff accomodation, male & female toilets & the Buffet & bar. I didn't want too bigger building on the island Platform as it just hides the trains...as nice as buildings are. I wanted to keep much of this platform 'open' tho considering passengers needs in real life The building along platform 3 is just a facia that attaches to the back of the main station frontage building. As this platform is lightly used passenger wise, it houses Staff messrooms aswell as the red star office & station managers office. The train announcers office is also located on this platform...So here is how it is all looking so far... 1st up, i hacked up the Metcalf factory into suitable sections The island Platform building ready to be glued together & finally the almost complete facia on platform 3 Cheers for now Mark Edited July 11, 2018 by 1977joey
muddy water
Great to see your progress! Are the canopy support columns 2" nails? At least they will not get snapped off!

1977joey
Hi Everyone, As it's gone a bit cooler from that crazy heatwave, I've managed to have a bash at getting bits done to Shrewford. Mainly concentrating on the Red Star Parcels office & also the Railway bridge at the Chester end of the station. Instead of cutting through the board, as before, I've made an illusion as if the road dips to go under the railway, & putting a tin foil screen to create a mirror effect which was suggested by someone on the forum before.. Here are some pictures of the latest progress... First a look at the new Red Star Parcels office to the right of the main station building The I begin the screen for the Railway bridge Construction begins with Brick card by Matcalf A look from what the Bridge looks like from the street & from the other side as an empty stock from London Euston departs platform 4 Still bits to do to completely finish off this area... Cheers for now, Mark
1977joey
Hi Everyone, Thought it time for an update. The station itself is now nearing completion. I've built the canopies for the bay Platforms, printed off the signage & also the dreaded ballasting of the track. Signage printed out imitation lighting with the name attached to look like the 1960's style lamps fitted under the canopies I then had a brainwave thinking about the retaining walls pack I purchased, the tiny round pieces that hold the model together look a little like PA system speakers, so as there's a fair few of them...I chopped them up then this is how they look under the canopy! The bay platform canopies in situ station signage at the north end Then as of yesterday, I completed the Passenger information monitors aswell as fit the platform lamps (by knightwing). these are very fiddly to make but well worth the effort once they are in place. Now i need to populate the platforms, create a lip along the edge of the board next to Platform 7 to prevent any would be derailment causing a train to fall to the floor & sort out the area behind Shrewford No1 signal box.... so these pictures are from yesterday... The Customer information monitors ready to be mounted & a view showing the back of the 'Arrival & departure' screens what passengers see when they arrive at the top of the stairs from the subway Then a zoomed in shot of platform 4 showing a 2 car Class 150 Sprinter on the all stopper to Crewe Now looking at the south end of the station with the platform lamps in place. The signals are scratch built none working using knightwing traffic light heads..tho I am thinking of replacing these with something more accurate in the near future. & finally a zoomed in shot showing a Chester based unrefurbished 3 car class 108 DMU at platform 6 with the Wolverhampton stopper Cheers for now... nharding99
It's looking really good beneath those platform canopies. There was many a time that I caught a DMU at Shrewsbury for Aberystwyth from Platform 5 in the early to mid 1980s. Your layout certainly recollects those days. Keep up the good work! 1977joey
Hi Everyone, Just thought I'd post a few pictures from the other day when I gave the trains a bit of a run, tho I only run the trains slowly along Platform 7 as i'm yet to add the lip alongside the board just in case of any derailment. this will be the same as last time with strips of clear plasticard glued alongside, this has worked well in the past 7 is on my next 'to do' list after I've constructed all the signals. I have also started work on the signals, starting off with the gantry for the north end of the station controlling moves out of platforms 3 & 4. These will be completely none working, I'm just happy with a good representation. Maybe in time i may go for electrifying them. I have purchased dummy CR Signals (3 aspect) for the signal heads as these are an excellent representation. I'm using painted pin heads to represent the bulbs & they look really good. Here are some pictures... An overall view of the station showing a Class 25 at Platform 3 on a parcels service that has terminated, waiting for the signal for shunting the stock to the sidings, while in the bay platforms a 2 car Class 150/1 Sprinter waits at platform 5 with an Aberystwyth service while a 4 car DMU waits at platform 6 with a Cardiff all stops via Hereford Meanwhile a 3 car Class 150/1 in revised Sprinter livery has arrived at platform 7 with a chester to Birmingham New Street service & finally the in progress signal gantry for the Chester end of the station Cheers for now, Mark Edited November 21, 2018 by 1977joey
