D860 VICTORIOUS

Recommended Posts

Bit of a long shot, but here goes..

On September 16th 72,my mates and I were on the platform at Ealing Broadway, awaiting the arrival of a "Merrymaker" to Dawlish etc and Plymouth.832 had already passed through,a good start. We were confidently expecting a Western or Brush 4 for the journey, but the sight in the distance of a Warship on the slow line suggested otherwise. Sure enough, our train had 806 Cambrian up front,we were beside ourselves!!

My question is,did anyone on the forum get a picture of this train, 1Z15? I took a couple of b/w shots at Plymouth, pretty poor unfortunately.

Cambrian didn't work the return, I think the class were more or less confined to working off Laira by then.

832 was on 1B15 08.30 Paddington - Paignton and your train, 1Z15 was the 08.40 Paddington - Plymouth. 806 didn't return as it was required at LA for an A exam... What did you have back out of interest? And you should post your pictures too....

You would of passed 821 on the 10.00 Paignton - Paddington, followed by 818 on the 10.43 Newton Abbot - Paddington.....

The pictures are not mine, just in my collection so cannot take the credit, although I wish I had :-)

Mark,I don't mind admitting that I got a lump in my throat seeing the picture of Cambrian at Exeter, just completely and totally fantastic...

There was a signal stop near Taunton, and Greyhound and Glory were indeed seen.

We bunked round Laira, Newton Abbot and Exeter SP that day.806 was already on shed when we arrived. 824 was also at Laira, plus withdrawn 825 and 829.

While waiting at Exeter for the return, 821 appeared again on a down express. The return was worked by 1602 (boo hiss..) My notes also indicate haulage by D1066,

either between Plymouth and Newton Abbot,or from there to Exeter.

My b/w picture effort of Cambrian at Plymouth was fairly disastrous,I managed to chop off a bit of the nose..However my mate, who had a slightly better camera using colour film,

got a pretty decent result,so I'll try to post one of his shots when possible.

Thank you so much Mark for posting the pictures and information, it really is appreciated. That was my only Warship haulage, and around three weeks later came my final sight of one in service,

at Old Oak Common, kind of appropriate for me.
