It's interesting to see from the pictures that Dave posted of the Tarmac/ Ermewa batch that they have the same style buffers as the EWS type rather than the 'bread loaf' shape fitted to the Mendip/ VTG ones built at the same time. I don't know if it's something that can be reproduced on a commercial set of transfers but each of the debranded Cemex wagons is patched slightly differently and several have bits of the Cemex logo showing through the patch and it'd be a nice touch if this was carried across! The map looks really good too, and like the TEAs and KFAs gives a good quick check of where they run. If you make any changes in the future, a couple of minor bits that may be of interest to you, the Whatley - St Pancras and Whatley - Hayes (same path, 10.37 away) is a Tarmac train, hence the use of DB wagons not Mendip. Also, the Mendip HOAs also visit Allington in Kent (ex Whatley), Wootton Bassett (ex Merehead) and could potentially (and probably already have) visit Stud Farm/ Cliffe Hill in Leicesteshire, thus. I have a consist of the Allington train that's 100% HOA. Page 62 of 'Rail Freight Since 1968- Bulk Freight' by Paul Shannon mentions the Anglo-Scottish flow. It initially ran to Mossend (Presumably P D Stirling's terminal) then to Ayr; in both cases, the sand would have been carried onwards by road to Irvine. The flow ceased in May 2007. The customer would seem to have been the Ardagh Group, who mention on their web-site that they now use mainly cullet (recycled glass), rather than virgin materials. BTW, my understanding is that the Revolution wagon will have Cemex branding, it will be up to the user to debrand them, but having seen the real thing that would seem to be dead easy as they didn't bother to match the shade of grey they used to the original wagon body. There has also been more recently a flow from Shap Summit quarry to Mossend; I am hoping to get some pictures of this soon. I am going to update the map to add the flow from Middleton Towers to Arpley/Ince as that's missing, and I will also make some adjustments to the Whatley traffic in the light of Jo's comments above. Please keep the information coming; it seems these wagons travelled even more widely than we realised when we selected them as a candidate for a model. For the Cemex models it seems easiest to produce rub-down blanking patches in a pale grey colour as an aftermarket product for those that want them; but they would also be a very simple mask/spray job too using Halfords grey primer. The wagons are now used on traffic from other places as well as Peak Forest, the repaints from EWS into Cemex livery, and the later patching out of it presumably reflects changes in the contracts with that quarry over the years. pharrc20 Posted December 6, 2016 Share Posted December 6, 2016 The Cemex branding seems to have been painted out towards the end of 2008 (along with the similarly branded IIA wagons) according to my photos. And also when first delivered new in early 2007 the first 6 EWS Construction HOAs I saw were in traffic from Tunstead with the JMA hoppers on aggregates traffic these being noted being loaded at Tunstead after a long hike up on top of Great Rocks Tunnel hillside. These were 320006 / 000 / 015 / 004 / 001 + 002 followed by 8 JMAs on 18th February 2007. You don't tend to see many at Peak Forest now sometimes the odd one in the sidings next to the road but I haven't seen a full rake there recently most of the work being done by the HTAs now. Having done a little more work on establishing the routes taken by the various flows I have tried to tidy up the Midlands, reflecting that the Peak Forest - Bletchley trains travel appear to travel out via the WCML and back via the Bedford link and the MML. It's great that for you can run authentic rakes of anything between just four HOAs and 19, mix in PGAs and JGAs, and for those with a little less space the average number of HOAs seems to be 12-14 which is a lot more modellable than many freight trains; intermodals and coal trains are usually significantly longer. Steadfast Posted December 8, 2016 Share Posted December 8, 2016 (edited) When the first batch of Mendip wagons was delivered in the summer, they ran as a block of 20 with 16 EWS HTAs on the Theale and Colnbrook trains. As more HOAs were delivered the HTAs were stood down and the HOAs can now appear on any Mendip service, mixed in with the Mendip IIAs and older Hanson and Yeoman JHAs. The one exception that springs to mind are the sand workings in the London area - this uses a dedicated set of IIAs that can be differentiated from the others as they are VTG not Nacco owned. Whilst the majority of Mendip operations originate from Merehead (AI, ex Yeoman) and Whatley (Hanson), other loading points for these services include Avonmouth, Machen, Angerstein Wharf and Cliffe Hill, in Leicestershire. The only comparable bogies I am aware of in British N are those on the Voyagers, and have much more drag than the pin-point bearing types. This isn't a huge problem on a four car passenger train, where there are six trailing bogies, but on even a relatively light aggregate train of 12 hoppers you're looking at 24 bogies. Cheers Ben A. It is getting pretty crowded around the London area so I won't be adding any more - I think the picture is pretty clear that these trains hit most, or all, of the freight routes across the capital. Backing in to Peak Forest The train was quite a mix of hopper types. Ignore the file names - just my quick shorthand picture edit..... Makes total sense, you've only got 3 livery options and more limited distribution too, plus no ARC/Hanson 59 haulage (yet!), so I think the HOA is a far wiser choice. I just like the JHAs! Many TOPS codes cover more than one type of wagon now, presumably because there isn't enough codes for all the possible variations. There used to be some logic behind the codings under BR but as things have evolved since privatisation there is less and less logic behind the codes, as reasons for decisions become irrelevant over time. You are better off not trying to understand the logic, some ways things are coded in 2016 are 'wrong' based on the original BR logic for example - including private owner bogie hoppers getting the code HOA!I know that doesn't help much, sorry!To your specific query:IIA-A was used for some GBRF and Fastline coal hoppers (some since repurposed)IIA-B was used for the above EWS (Cemex) and similar MRL aggregate hoppersIIA-C was used for biomass hoppers based on the coal hopper design Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
