bigbadbadge
Hi All I have been working on this one recently after replacing the chassis with a SE Finecast one a while ago. (we are having building work done so all my stock is packed away except for a few items such as this, a Triang L1 4-4-0 and a Chivers Fineline D3 0-4-4T. This has forced me to concentrate on one model at a time instead of the numerous aircraft and railway Items I usually have on the go and get no where with all of them. I have added cab floor, bunker wall and back head, new clack valves and pipework, Westinghouse pump, pagoda roof lips, window bars, handrails, lamp irons, steam and vacuum pipes. I will sort out the coal load and whistle after she has been painted. I bought the model from Ebay for a bargain price as it was running poorly, however I noticed the boiler had had the lower section added so there was now daylight underneath, the poorly running chassis was cleaned up and lubed and ran reasonably well so that has been put aside for a 1/32 narrow gauge project and the very nice SE Finecast chassis used in it's place. The clack valves, Westinghouse pump, and smoke box door handle are very nice items and have come from Branchlines and the etch brass items have come from MT trains sheets. Will get round to paint this week hopefully. Thanks for looking All the best Chris
45568
Look forward to seeing it fully painted. SR or BR(S)? Cheers, Peter C.
clarkeeboy56
I have two of these on the go Chris......one for the 'Spratt & Winkle' line and one 'Normal'. The body's were £8.50 off of e-bay and in bright red plastic! Considering their age the plastic was in very good nick. Plenty of scope for some serious butchery...... I'm considering either getting Branchline' s chassis or like you SE Finecast. And I like your novel approach Chris.......one model at a time! It'll never catch on! bigbadbadge
Hi All Thanks Guys and thanks for all the likes too. I have been painting and now she is ready for a coat or two of Klear which I will do tonight. I have cheated too and been working on my Triang L1 which I have re motored using an SE finecast Motor and gearbox and have done some adjustments to the Top of the rear of the Tender and will be adding new Westinghouse pump and pipework etc. Will post more photos soon. Thanks for looking. All the best Chris
Poor Old Bruce
Nice work Chris. The photos seem to show brass Ramsbotton safety valves on a round base. Where did you get them please?

bigbadbadge
Hi Guys Yes Horstan is correct, they are very nice items from Branchlines as are the Clack Valves, Smoke box door dart and Westinghouse pump. Thanks Guys All the bestChris
Horsetan
Some of the Branchlines parts are also found in their SECR "O"/"O1" kit.
Nick Holliday
Hi Guys Yes Horstan is correct, they are very nice items from Branchlines as are the Clack Valves, Smoke box door dart and Westinghouse pump. Thanks Guys All the best Chris Just to be pedantic, the twin barrelled bit of kit on the front of the offside tank is actually a steam reverser. The SECR was a vacuum brake line, and the only SECR or SER locos fitted with a Westinghouse brake would be the select few dual fitted to handle foreign rolling stock. The LCDR used the superior Westinghouse brake, but I am not sure whether this was phased out following the formation of the SECR. Certainly the SR would have removed any surviving ones, unless used on the push-pull conversions.
bigbadbadge
Hi Nick Thanks for pointing this out to me otherwise I would have been blissfully unaware. All the bestChris
bigbadbadge
Hi All A bit of further progress on the R1, paint now on and ready for weathering, will start on this soon as I have been medalling with another loco a Triang L1, which has been re motored using a South Eastern Finecast motor and gearbox and runs very well. Various additions to the body as the images show and also re worked the tender top. I will let the images explain. Thanks for looking All the bestChris
bigbadbadge
Hi All Thanks for the likes, I have been able to complete the brakes and sanding pipes as below Will get some paint on in the next few days and start to weather both. Thanks for looking Chris
SRman
May I ask what driving wheels you have used on both of these locos, please?
Horsetan
Looks like Markits wheels.
SRman
Thanks Ivan, but I was also interested in the sizes used too, as I have similar projects underway. The Romford wheels I used on my L1 are correct for scale size but make it sit way too high, so I was wondering what other possibilities are around. bigbadbadge
Thanks Guys for your kind comments. How is your L1 progressing ? The wheels are Markits ones and I measured them and they are 26 mm wheels 22 spokes. Hope this helps. The Ramsbottom valve set up on the R1 is from Branchlines with the base filed down to suit the base already in place. All the bestChris
SRman
Thanks, Chris. That information is, indeed, very helpful. My L1 has stalled for the moment due to my dissatisfaction with the riding height. The detailing work on my R1 has also stopped but it is operational, including on DCC.
bigbadbadge
Hi All SrMan - No worries glad this helped. BTW the measurement was from tyre edge to tyre edge, If you want an accurate measurement by calipers I will be able to oblige at the weekend, but I am sure when I ordered them a few years ago it was from Mainly Trains and they had a chart with all the wheel types/sizes and spoke numbers against the real size and loco type so it was very easy. Let me know if you want me to measure up. I have added a quick first coat of paint last night and have attached photos, it gives a better impression of the loco now. bigbadbadge
Just added another coat of satin black to the loco body and the first bit on the tender top. Will remove the Southern decals on tender and replace also. Will have to do this tomorrow now as going to have to do something else now. Londontram
Just found this thread, excellent work I've always thought some of these old Triabg/Hornby bodies with a bit of sympathetic work have a lot of mileage in them yet plus you've got the satisfaction of having done some real modeling not just opening a box. Already looking forward to your next project, Steve
bigbadbadge
Hi all Hope you all had a great Christmas and I wish you a happy and healthy New Year. Thanks Steve for your very kind comments. I have done a little more to both, I have decalled both and have started weathering, just some bits to touch in and couplings to add and coal and I think that is about it. Thanks for looking All the bestChris
RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted December 28, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 28, 2016 Chris, Those are incredible. You would never guess that they were the Dublo / Tri-ang models. Well done! Gary
Nearholmer
Very true, especially the L1. I remember them from the 1970s, and finesse of moulding isn't what has stuck in my mind at all. They seemed to be made of unpainted, green, semi-translucent plastic, so looked fairly toy-like. K
Stuartthegrant
I really like the L1, great job.
