Class 142

I'm trying to remember whether any Provincial-liveried 142s ran in the NE—some Skipper-liveried ones did initially when they replaced the 143s—or whether they were in RR livery by then. I'd also be interested in a TWPTE or Provincial 143 if you ever do them...

So many versions of the provincial 4 leaf doors e.g Newton Heath or the other side of the pennines. Plus the Network North West label that made it to all parts of the network. Also there was an engine swap on the 142 from the Leyland units to the later and still current units there are changes in respect to how the units looked under the floor how well they appear on the model we will have to see.

Several mods over the years,

Brakes changed from cable to Direct Acting

Doors changed to two leaf

Engine changed to Cummins 225hp with transmission changed to Voith

Seats changed by several TOC's

Sanding gear added

not much changed over the years!

was there all that much of a difference in the look of engines fitted that you could pick out bearing in mind models will be viewed at most side on? are most of the engines not mostly behind the fairly deep solebar?

Its going to be difficult and expensive for Realtrack to cater for absolutely every combination 100%

We have to have a cut off point due to costs & production run sizes, correct comment above, its not viable to do 'every' difference, honestly thats commercially very silly!!!

For example we bring out the perfect model, then Hornby bring out theirs £100.00 less.  Who will win here.

The example I quote above is not as daft as it sounds, take our Class 156.  IF we do the new Northern Livery at say £240.00 then Hornby bring out there old model at £120.00 I know who will loose out in sales.  Yes the Hornby will be wildly incorrect, wrong windows, no detailing, lights etc.  BUT its half the price.

On the 142 we are not doing one model, we are doing:

Different Route Blinds.

Different Roofs

Different Roof Pods

Multiple Liveries & Numbers

Advanced DCC Features

Full Lighting

Twin Decoder & Speaker fitted

Micro Motors (Totally Hidden)

Dummy BSI Couplings

Detailing Pack

BUT we cannot cater for everything, sorry.     Charlie

An interesting one I heard the other night (Christmas piss up) was one of the 142 is getting a original paint job in a few months, I have an idea which one but lets see.

142001 in GMPTE Orange is the story,  The TOC concerned has to recieve 'A big thanks' if true.   The NRM have been allocated this one.

HOPE ITS TRUE!

Charlie    PPS Thats is one we are going to do as well.

142001 is listed for saving by the railway heritage committee but will it go to York, they have a 101 that's never even been to York. All we know is 1420001 is to be saved like 58080 but that's another story

Browsing and found a very large number of locos and units are allocated to the national collection from TOCs and leasing companies after they have finished their useful life. e.g Class 60, 150/2, 159, 139, 66, 92, 142, 2 of DRS’ DBSOs, Caroline, a Mk4 DVT, a 442 Driving car. a full HST set with coaches and an example of numerous wagons and snowploughs.

A really interesting read.

Its more of an expression, than an allocation. I think there is claims on at least two class 91’s.

Whether they are accessioned into the collection is another story.

A full HST is quite an under taking, indeed probably the NRMs biggest single undertaking, whether they have space or resource or maintain a full set is another matter. Theres not a lot of preserved railways that could house a full HST set, and probably none undercover, let alone make use of it.

It would be nice to see a few more pacers make it into preservation thsn just 001.

Whilst unloved, their contribution to railway history is the same as the HST, without them much of our branchline network wouldnt exist and certainly not as thriving as it does today. From a preservation perspective, these are towards the last of the low Tec/ non computerised equipment remaining available to preservation, which will be an issue in the future.

I have heard at least one preserved line that are in talks with Portebrook with a quoted price of £20,000 for a 142.

24t per vehicle, Steel underframe with Aluminium body... £160 per ton for scrap steel x 48 tons puts it at £7.5k.

It’s is basically a lump of disabled non-compliant, non-toilet water retaining unusable scrap at the end of 2019 after all, which needs £175k of overhaul with an extremely good salesman and a brave faced rail operator to put a longer Mainline life back in it...

Any further use for the engines ?

Cummins LTA10 seem to be worth around £2.5k overhauled, so knackered isn’t much, maybe as a super charged longailboat engine in Bangkok ?

It is after all just a steel framed railway wagon, with a truck engine and an aluminium bus skin.

Hope it’s a runner with spares, delivered for £20k, you could probably get CVRs class 141 for sale for that, which includes its historic / rarity value.
