Hello

No it's not Mick, blackmail is such a wonderful feeling.

  • 1 month later...

whilst it has always been a good show, I (and Natalie) have elected not to go this year due to things that are mainly beyond the control of the show organisers. Just find it too tiring and difficult to manage due to health mainly now (that and dealing with London traffic, trains not being a viable option).

Hope everyone who goes has a cracking time though and I look forward to seeing video and photos of the show.

Not booked your tickets yet? Here's a reminder of why you should...!

For some people, this show will also offer the first chance to find out what the "new improved" BRM is likely to be like. Whether we also get a chance to ask the new BRM Editor about his plans for the magazine remains to be seen.

Strangely enough, I didn't notice any stuff in that YouTube video about seminars - which I've come to regard as a major selling point of the "Ally Pally" show over the last few years.

The area where these are normally held at the Doncaster show had additional layouts in it this year. Possibly they've decided to drop the Seminars from the Exhibitions.

Sorry Huw, I should have confirmed earlier that there's no theatre at Ally Pally this year with more space being used for exhibits. As at Doncaster I am sure my time will get amply filled with other activities!

Fair enough.

I'm still looking forward to the show.

Has the floorplan for this year's "Ally Pally" been (more or less) finalised yet?

I was just wondering if there are any plans to put this on the show website - some people have been known to try and work out in advance which hall / where in this hall / which layouts, traders etc to concentrate on first.

Saying that, any money I spend there is more likely to be with specialist traders - not all of which are noted for attracting enormous scrums - but I'd prefer not to waste too much of the day trying to find my way around.

Hi Huw

If you go to http://www.warners-shows.co.uk then follow the show link you should come across the trade plans in PDF format. These show the location of the layouts and trade stand numbers. Then finding the list of traders - they are called exhibitors - you will have their booth/stand number. Hey presto!

First time visit for me with the 'Woodsville' layout.  Sort of looking forward to it but I anticipate a tiring weekend!

3 layouts from Wakefield there this year.  Is this a record?!

Just realised that Woodsville's name is still misspelled in the layout info despite this being notified some time ago - and spelled correctly on all the forms.  There is definitely an 'S' in there.

This may be considered pedantic but somebody will be shown up if it's wrong in the showguide - and it won't be me!

Interesting to see that Hornby have moved from the back wall to the front, separated from Bachmann only by the BRM stand!!  Do we know if Bachmann are reintroducing the returned items sales stand this year please?  If not then I won't bother hurrying to get there for opening doors.

It's unlikely I'll be there either this year as it clashes with the next round of the London Undergound Random 15 Championship, and having missed two rounds and failed miserably in the third I'd really like to get some points on the board! I suppose if the start turns out to be Manor House or Finsbury Park or Archway, then it might be possible to get there for a couple of hours, but I'm not really sure the ticket price would justify such a short stay.

Hi Manxcat,

Sorry to hear about this, we've haven't been made aware of any problems with the code. Please can you email me with your details and I'll ask Ticket Factory to look into it.

Thanks

Philippa

philippae@warnersgroup.co.uk

This problem still exists today, 2nd March 2017, as a friend was unable to book 2 tickets this morning. After going round in circles which included a call to Warners he is awaiting a call from the Ticket Factory!

Bachmann will definitely not have a returned stock sales stand at the exhibition.

That has probably saved me a few hundred quid and earned an extra hour in bed!!

So where do Bachmann dispose of their returned items now?

There was a stand at Warley last year and I would imagine there will be this year but they haven't got a lot of stock comparatively at the moment that has had to undergo service/repair.

Now if they were offering a couple of their On30 streetcars, I might be interested ... .

Seriously though, this sounds good. I take it anyone visiting the show will be able to enter. Would I be right in assuming that forms are to be dropped off at the BRM stand (without a requirement to subscribe)?

If I've got this right each exhibitor was asked to supply a question based on their layout. I am open to offers.......... However this might be a children's competition. Those of us in their 2nd childhood might not be able to enter.

On a slightly more serious note to my answer above, can anyone give me an idea of how long it will take to travel to and fro between the Palace and the hotel we have been allocated, the Premier Inn at Enfield. My route planner says 30 minutes but I wonder if anyone has any experience of doing that journey in Friday evening and Saturday morning traffic.

My Google Maps route planner states 40 minutes in current evening traffic. From my experience driving round Enfield I would say those times are about right. However "it depends" is a good idea to keep in mind. Google maps live traffic has all the road works etc.

There are 2 Premier inns in Enfield according to Google!

That spoils the fun!

If they were to ask all exhibitors, I could imagine the sort of questions they might have got if they'd asked a controller supplier - or MERG, for that matter:

  • What nominal track supply voltage is used for most DC powered HO layouts ... and what's the real maximum track voltage?
  • How many wires do you really need to get the "juice" to the track with DCC?

Seriously though, I'm sure that (just like me) some exhibitors would be rather more interested in the technical side of model railways than they might be in what they look like.

However, one of the great things about this hobby is the fact that it's got so many different areas, that interest different people. Long may this continue.

Returning to the survey, it sounds to me like the show organisers might be more interested in what draws people to shows in general - this one in particular - and what we might like to see more of in future.

The show organisers would only need to look at this site to get a good idea of the sort of answers they'd be likely to get from people like me. However, I suspect that the majority of show visitors are unlikely to be members here - even less active posters. I'd imagine they're particularly keen to get the views of this silent majority.

Huw.

Jamie, can I ask how you were informed where you would be staying as an exhibitor, as none of the documentation I've received so far gives me any accomodation information?

I got the info direct from Nick Freezer. Off the top of my head I couldn't tell you which of the Premier Inns it is at Enfield but apparently they did a much better deal than the one by the dog track.
