silverlink Posted December 8, 2016 Share Posted December 8, 2016 This is my first venture into '0' gauge modelling so I thought I would share my experiences with you, I have just retired my last layout, Haymarket Cross' from the exhibition circuit after six years and thirty plus shows. I am trying to make the layout as easy as possible to move when I start taking it on the road. it measures 20' x 2' and will have three scenic boards 4'x 2' & two fiddle yard boards with traversers 4' x 2'. Here are my first photos This time I have started with the scenics as I'm finding everything so much bigger than 4mm, I have found a really good source of textured brick which looks really good. I have also decided to use Foamex for building which is both light and strong and when glued together with Pipe Cement I get a permanent bond. Andrew P Posted December 8, 2016 Share Posted December 8, 2016 Hi Ian, I always admired Haymarket Cross on the Exhibition circuit, the first time I saw it was at Model Rails Barrow Hill Live in 2012 when I had my Glen Roy Layout there. Obviously none of the buildings are finished yet and I've still got more to make. I've just completed one of the two points that will be on the layout, I'm using C&L Fine scale B6 which I really enjoy building. All trackwork will be C&L fine scale with point operation via Tortoise Switch Machines which I used most successfully on my Haymarket Cross layout. I have also managed to keep all my Digitrax electronics from the above layout which I intend to use on this project. silverlink Posted December 18, 2016 Author Share Posted December 18, 2016 Have spent quite a lot of time this week on the layout, have concentrated on getting track laid which has gone well so far. Have finished constructing the C&L Point kits and laid the 6mm cork underlay. I have used a length of string tied at each end of the layout to get a straight line to work to. I have also been working on the buildings making chimney stacks and chimneys, I have also assembled and fitted the York Modelmaking laser cut doors. silverlink Posted December 24, 2016 Author Share Posted December 24, 2016 Brickwork is from Country Scenics and the guy you need to contact is Martin Wood : martin.s.wood@gmail.com He does around six different brick colours and a couple of stone, its embossed and really good. I use UHU to stick it to the Foamex. The arch in both the overbridge and tunnel are done with 300grms card and then covered with the embossed brick. silverlink Posted December 29, 2016 Author Share Posted December 29, 2016 (edited) Good afternoon all, Have spent some happy hours over Christmas in my garage getting on with laying track and have now got all the track on the scenic part of the layout laid. Next job will be wiring which fortunately is one of my favourite parts of layout building. Have also just started scratch building the North Eastern signal box which is a first for me as this is my first completely scratch built layout I have done, previous layouts I have used and modified building kits to make what I wanted. The windows have been specially made for me by York Modelmakers. I just hope it turns out ok. silverlink Posted December 31, 2016 Author Share Posted December 31, 2016 Have carried on today assembling the sides of signal box and added channel for windows to run in I have also been putting together the York Modelmaking laser cut signal box steps which go together really well. Am now going to fit chimney stack prior to adding the textured brickwork, please feel free to comment as any advice and tips would be most welcome.
