Replacing the steam Kings and Castles on top link duties from 1958 on the Western region of British Railways and with two preserved examples the Warship diesel has become a popular model. Heljan have produced one in 0 gauge, Bachmann, Hornby Railroad, Jouef, Lima and Mainline have made 00 gauge versions, Fleischmann and Trix have made them in H0 gauge and the Graham Farish and Minitrix examples are in N gauge.

The prices range from about £25 for a second hand Mainline model to about £700 for a Heljan model. The cheaper models help people with limited budgets to enter the hobby but the most expensive models may be better value for money in the long run.

The picture shows a Hornby Railroad D853 Thruster on the Purbeck Model Railway Group's 00 gauge layout at the 1st floor of the stables at Godlingston Manor, Swanage. Hattons are offering the similar R3491 Class 42 Warship D805 'Benbow' in BR green for £39.

Perhaps worth pointing out in the interests of clarity that;

The Hornby Railroad product's bodyshell is the same as that by Lima, I think with a new chassis, specifically an improved powered bogie.

The Bachmann 42 is similarly the Mainline 42 body with a better chassis, central motor drive rather than power bogie.

The Bachmann 43 is a new moulding and chassis altogether from the 42.

The Trix one is probably only an approximation to HO, as it followed Trix's own "OO" scale of 3.8:1, their EM1/ class 76 was the same.

I've never encountered a Joeuf one either, but remain open to persuasion!

A Heljan 0 gauge Warship. These come without numbers or names so the owner can choose a suitable identity.

That's a cracking model! No problem to change the identity of Bachmann Warships though...

Just to add to the above, Bachmann 42's seem to go for £35-50 on Ebay, quite a bit less than a new, discounted 43 for just under £120.

On a purely personal note, as an analogue (DC) operator, I rather prefer the older Bachmann 42 chassis to that of the new 43, as the latter seems too highly geared. The 43 bodyshell is however far more detailed with see through roof grilles and lots of little bits to add on that in terms of appearance produce a very fine model indeed.

The Heljan 7mm example is quite wondrous, as illustrated above, and goes for around £550 from the likes of Tower Models in Blackpool.

Fleischmann continued to make their HO gauge Warships 'Glory' and 'Greyhound' for 27 years. Perhaps they would have done better if they had made some Mk1 coaches to go with them.

According to page 52 of the January 2017 free guide to modelling produced by the Railway Magazine Marklin made an HO gauge model of a Warship diesel in 1967. Sales were disappointing so Marklin did not produce any more HO items for the British market.
