New Tooling – Graham Farish (N Scale)

Stanier 8F 2-8-0 (also with 1 version with sound)

No fewer than 852 of these heavy goods locomotives were built between 1935 and 1946. The design proved so successful that it was adopted by the War Department during the Second World War and saw service as far afield as Italy, Turkey, Iran and Israel, as well as with the LNER.

The model will feature a NEXT 18 DCC decoder socket, coreless motor, loco drive, fine cab detail and NEM couplers

372-160 LNER Class O6 (8F) 2-8-0 No. 3506 in LNER Black livery

372-161 LMS Stanier Class 8F 2-8-0 No. 8035 in LMS Black livery

C Class (which is sound enabled)

Designed primarily for goods duties, Harry Wainwright’s ‘C’ Class 0-6-0 also proved useful for local passenger and excursion trains. Built by Neilson, Reid & Co., Sharp Stewart and the South Eastern & Chatham Railway’s works at Longhedge and Ashford, they proved to be a successful and long-lived class with the last trio surviving in use until 1966. No. 592 is preserved at the Bluebell Railway.

This will be a perfect companion for the SECR ‘Birdcage’ coaches, also due to be released this year, as well as the many Southern Railway goods wagons in the range.

The model will feature a NEXT 18 DCC decoder socket, coreless motor, loco drive, fine cab detail and NEM couplers

372-775 C Class 0-6-0 No. 271 in SECR plain green livery

Refurbished Class 31

In the mid-1980s, 137 Class 31s were refurbished to extend their working lives. A number received Electric Train Supply (ETS) equipment for passenger work and a few are still in use today with Network Rail and smaller operators.

New for this year are models with the refurbished body details, together with buffer-beam modifications and revised lighting.

More there than I was expecting to see, interesting to see that there is a relatively small loco (the C class) that will be sound enabled.

I did receive the following message from my bank "thankfully we foresee a cheap year ahead". Which is true enough as there is "nothing for me", but this is not a bad this as it is not reasonable to expect there to be "something for me" in every announcement.

The Thompson coaches will be most welcome I suspect, and although nothing for the modern era to tempt me (until the 319 comes out), it's a good set of releases for N, especially whe combined with the product update, there is a steady stream of releases for the modeller over the next 18 months or so.

Nice to see refurbished 31, and retooled TEAs.must admit I had expected the freightliner flats to be shrunk, and disappointed that the MK2Fs from last time (or was it the time before?) aren't further on. Secretly had wanted an RB but nice that the RMB is in InterCity livery

An 8F at last! Yippee! And a C--most welcome. Did I see a split-box 40 somewhere on the list too? New TEAs at last too--hopefully some older liveries will follow.

yes you did see a split-box 40, 40141 BR Blue with digital sound. Forgive me for asking such a basic question: will this be able to be run on normal 12V DC?

Well, a better program than I expected.

Very nice to see the 8F getting a long awaited retool and the C Class should be a beautiful little model, although it looks like they won't be attempting the fully lined SCER livery which is a shame, but perhaps understandable! Eastern modellers will no doubt be very happy with the Thompson coaches, and I see a split headcode Class 40 is also on the cards along with the refurb Class 31.

The N Gauge 'Status Update' section raised an eyebrow however. Only 2 products at the production stage, only 1 in tooling (and thats only a chassis upgrade), and almost every single other new product announced in the last 2 years still in the drawing office or R&D. To me this shows just how much of a problem Bachmann have faced over the past few years. Hopefully the extra resources announced last year allow some of these models to progress through to release faster than we have become accustomed to recently.

I don't see why not. Bachmann are using Zimo decoders for their sound fitted models and they do allow for running on DC. You just wouldn't have access to the full range of sounds available to the DCC user.

My round up of the Graham Farish 2017 range from a SR / BR(s) range can be found here https://grahammuz.com/2017/01/08/Bachmann-201718-range-announcements-includes-a-class-410-4bep-emu-in-00-and-ex-secr-c-class-in-n

Quite disappointing for me.

Yet again only a couple of models I will buy, but as I am still waiting on all of last years re-liveries that I wanted, I don't see these coming out this year anyway.

No mention of the DBSO in the product updates either.

The Farish catalogue cover brings back font memories of the 1991 supplement - the little addition to the 1989 edition that had the explosion of intercity, rail freight sector and rail express systems releases. This was my entry point to the hobby and I will always look back on the rail freight sectors warmly because of this.

The retooled TEA is of interest - I wonder if the success of the RT later period TEA has had influence on that choice/decision. The C class is sensible to partner the birdcage coaches but I can't see either being big sellers, particularly on their own.

I agree with Tom over concerns of the apparent lack of progress with the outstanding announcements. But it's probably a consequence of their new policy over honest reports and not announcing new product until it is well progressed. Presumably that means all those in this new announcement have leapfrogged the older announcements and are well developed and near to release. That wouldn't bode well for the remainder.

No second issue of the Mk1 FK in b/g the first issue has been sold out for a year, seems an odd omission.

Mk2 FK in b/g weathered is a pain, hope it's just a light coat.

100 ton tanks are good news, as is the prospect of no class 25/3 for at least a couple of years.....my conversion can start.

Misread the carflat release with cars as n Gauge........with the NGS ones due this year.

I find myself agreeing Grahame. The C class was if I recall correctly a very good seller in 00 but I'm not sure there is going to be much more than a Union Mills sized market for it in in N.

The 8F on the other hand will doubtless prove a popular choice and I'm glad dibs on this have remained with Bachmann. A sound fitted one is now on my must have list alongside a few Thompson coaches.

However unless there is more detail to add to what has already been said, we have no details of either timescale or price and I too hope that we don't have another 4 year wait as we have become accustomed to in many other cases (and looks likely with some of the remaining projects based on progress to date).

I am also concerned that thus far there are a lot of re-releases from last year's announcements that don't have planned release dates yet and that looks like a heck of a lot of production capacity to find at the factory.

So, in summary a pleasing cross section of new releases with something for almost everyone but I do have reservations that alongside already planned announcements there will be a very long wait for anything and I am hoping that someone attending today's Trade event can clarify/reassure in that respect?

Had not noticed the Highlander set, pity it's digital.  If it contains large logo Class 37/4's and appropriate coaches then some DCC chips and controllers will be finding their way onto EBay.

EDIT: 37418 in large logo and name and Stag (prefer Terrier's but easily dealt with!) and two green/cream Mk2's.  Image on Bachmann Farish website now but unable to link to image or post it here annoyingly.
