Coleborne Junction - Southern Steam 50's - 60's era

Recommended Posts

Coleborne Junction was on the previous RMweb and I am now in the process of starting a new topic on the updated site, below is an itroduction prepared by the owner of the layout. I and 2 others attend on Thursdays and help build and operate it. I will try and include early pics of the development and as we go on I will put up to date pictures on here also.

Coleborne Junction is a fictitious southern region main line layout with inter-regional connections mainly Great Western.

The time is set in the 1950's-1960's. The model is not based on any actual site, but could be likened to such a location as Basingstoke or Salisbury, with the main line trains from the capital and inter regional trains from the North feeding through to the south and south west of England.

At the west end of the station, situated between the junction, is a four road loco shed and a yard with a turntable and coaling stage. The layout is a continuous circuit running into a 12 road storage yard at the back, underneath the GW branch section.

The layout itself is 22ft x 10ft (22ftx6'6" at the narrow end). Frames are constructed of 2x1 soft wood with 9mm ply for the tops (suspended elevation). The track is all peco code 100 and the layout ic DCC wired, the control unit is a ZTC 511.

The layout may not be a complete and accurate account of how things were or should be, but we will no doubt have a great pleasure in building the layout, and feel that it will offer great operating potential..

These picture are quite old now and things have moved on quite a bit but they are just to give an idea of the layout. When we have our next session I will put on some newer ones.

Many thanks

Scott

Hi all,

This thread has been lying dormant for quite a while now, but work has continued on the layout despite the lack of updates. I popped across this evening to see the boys and took a couple of pics of the shed area. There will be more to follow in a few weeks.

The layout is really coming together now, with the scenics a lot further on. The branch terminus is still to be started but the lines leading to it are done.

I will put on a more detailed progress report once the pictures have been taken.

The groove to the right of the first picture is where the shed building goes, its being detailed at the moment which is why its not in situ. The double tracks to the left of the picture will eventually lead to the Terminus.

Thanks for looking.

Love those sweeping curves - they make a much more impressive layout that an equal-length straight, and you've mastered the art of landscaping them, too. Ditto the curved platforms - always more interesting IMHO, if also rather more trouble to create in the first place. And we can never have enough Southern layouts!

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in replying, been away for a few days..

There will be more pictures in the near future, susch as the station area, and the owner of the layout is sorting out a track plan.

There will be s shed Kris, as explained above, the grooves are where it goes but its away being detailed at the moment and I have been reliably informed that it may be away for a while. Lets hope the weather stays fine for the fitters!

Olddudders, thanks for your comments, the sweeping curves do look good when 4 trains are travelling on them.

Thanks for taking the tiem to view and comment, I must express though that this is not my layout, I am just one of the helpers and I use that term loosely, there are two others that help a lot more than I do, I see myself more as an annoyance!

There is a break of two weeks for holidays but when we are back on I will sort out the above requests.

Cheers

Scott

Hello,

They have been a while coming but here are a few more pictures of Coleborne Junction, as yet the track plan has not been done. This is due to the busy life of all involved, it was the first time I had been to clubnight for a while, but at least I remembered my camera.

Progress continues, with the shed almost finished, the tunnel mouth and bridge at the far end complete and now the high street is starting to be built.

There is no particular order for these photos but I have taken a couple of long range ones so you should be able to work out most of the track plan for yourself.

Any questions then please feel free to ask. I'm hoping the Coleborne crew will pluck up the courage soon and assist. If not I will post pictures of them! I have to say that most of the work is doen by them so its only fair they take any credit or indeed constructive feedback...

Frankly, Scott, you're not doing much of a job as an annoyance, because this continues to look lovely! Must try harder!

Hi Scott

Fascinating to see the layout develop, and the depot shots are excellent. I am intrigued by the standpipes / hydrants with what looks like solder for the hoses, were these scratch built? Great detail and atmosphere, looking forward to more!

Hi Unicorn 1 Thanks for your comments, the hydrants are from the GEM range, excellent detail parts. The hose is produced from 1mm heat shrink sleeving with a piece of copper wire to form the shape. We hope to place more pics soon. thanks again for taking the time to look, and for your coments

Hi, The low relief town area is coming along fine and the turntable is shortly to be motorised we hope. The scenics look great now and must soon have a running evening. The time it takes to make just 1 housing kit is unbelievable but is sure worth it. Pooleboy

Its been a while but I managed to get to Coleborne Junction last night, the most exciting thing is that the radio station has finally been changed. I actually knew most some of the tunes! So that was a result. Good old Wave 105.

There is still no diesel refuelling point and I don't think its going to happen, although I have seen the perfect spot for one! I'll keep pestering...

Things are progressing well and the boys (loose term) have been working hard. Trackbed has been working hard on the footbridge, Wireman is busy painting bicycles and trying to work out how to fit the motor to the turntable and Pooleboy continues to keep everything in order...

The houses and shops have come on well, they are situated low down behind the station.. There is even a small park for the Coleborne residents to chillax..

I have taken a few pictures, once again I can't seem to stop the blurring on a lot of them, but they give the general feel for the layout.

The shed looks really smart now, the staff have arrived and its looking the part. Once the turntable and lighting are in it will be fab, a layout in itself I guess.

Now for the pictures ( in no particular order)

Hi,

Just a few more pictures of Coleborne.

1. My favourite part of the layout. The bay platform leading to the future branch line terminus above the fiddle yard.

2. A shot of part of the MPD, note the blind member of staff! Although I'm reliably informed he's actually a wheel tapper and he's carrying a hammer!

post-6849-0-53098100-1315935104.jpg

3. Catching up with the yard gossip.

post-6849-0-19279000-1315935106.jpg

4. A view across the table. The branch line can be seen rising in the distance.

5. A view of the station and the fiddle yard entrance.

Thanks for looking

Hi Scott, just came across these latest pictures. The layout is looking good, especially the yard shots - as you say this could be a layout in itself! I particularly like the scenic colours. Looking forward to seeing the branch terminus developments.

Regards, Les
