wireman
Last week, following all the rules and maintaining safe distances, the three of us met for pre. Christmas coffee and mince pies. I had taken my new class 73 and my own Gaugemaster DCC handset and we had a short running session. Unfortunately, athough my 73 had chance to stretch its legs, I didn't take any pictures there. The pictures here are of recently weathered 73050 with a freight entering Coleborne Junction. It is with mixed feelings that I come to the end of the year, but ever hopeful for 2021. Thanks to Nick and Graham for their comradeship, making the best of the situation and to wish every one as best a Christmas as they can but please, all stay safe. Hopefully a few exhibitions in 2021. Regards Brian. ( wireman ).
wireman
Happy New Year to all. Yet another Lockdown prevents any visits to Coleborne for a few weeks again, but modern ( to me ) technology enables Nick to send weathering updates frequently. This time it is West Country , Plymouth, which has been the the receipient. Looking forward to our jabs, and possibly some return to normal. Best Regards. Brian. RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted January 18, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 18, 2021 Glad to see the windows are open. It has always amazed me that kits and ready to run have all three pains showing when the first thing you do in the morning, unless the rain is horizontal is open them, which is where they say. Lovely engines and layout. 1 1

wireman
An operating day at Coleborne this week plus Grahams new Bachmann 121. Excellent detail and sound although Nick is beginning to depair of both of us. Graham had only received the unit in the post that morning, so much playing with the various sounds ensued. All in all, excellent. The long awaited new Prodigy handsets have now arrived and fitted so this will allow up to four drivers at any one time or one driver driving four trains. ???? I now have a phone with a much better camera but what is really needed is a much better photographer. Regards Brian. ( wireman ).
wireman
The last couple of weeks our visits , summer weather and other things , have been in the evening . Despite a slightly shorter time being available we are still able to manage at least three tea breaks , and put the world to rights. It has always been difficult to see trains in the storage lanes without lifting the Wimhill boards. Two weeks ago Graham produced a 5 metre length of LED's which have now been attached to the frame work which supports Wimhill, being switched on by a micro switch activated on opening one of the drop down flaps. The reason for using the micro switch is because he just happened to have one. The days of a ten minute search for the torch are over. The next pics. are of Grahams latest addition to his own layout. Class 24. D5149. Sound fitted, all adding to Nicks anxiety about Graham and I. Who knows what next week will bring. It's about time Scott paid another visit with some of those yellow things he seems so keen on. Regards Brian. ( wireman ).
pitbull1845
Evening, Last night my membership was renewed at Coleborne Junction, and I was rewarded with a nice coffee and a cadbury boost bar! As always it was good to catch up with the 3 Amigos and the developments on the layout. The Prodigy Gaugemaster contollers were there now, replacing that awful ZTC system.. (my opinion only) I much prefer the ergonomics of the Prodigy controller and the ease of use. The plan for the night was to have a running session and that's exactly what we did. From shunting the yard, to running up the branchline to Wimhill. The turntable even got some use. The Pines express made an appearance and the milk from the dairy left for London behind a Q1, but more importantly I got to take the sound fitted 47 up the branchline. Overall a very good evening and long overdue. Thanks to Nick, Brian and Graham

Some good looking stock on there, it reminds me of my early period on Kings Moreton. IS THIS your NEW direction? 2
wireman
More visitors to Coleborne this week causing some confusion amongs the spotting community. First, a Thumper at Wimhill. Frantic thumbing through note books could find nothing like it. Even more alarm came amongst the noise and lack of steam when an HST appeared at Coleborne. These two, plus the resident Class 47 are sound fitted so a noisy evening was enjoyed. On my return home, I immediately checked on Brampton road for such strange things but was relieved to find all in good order. Mind, that third rail seems to be constantly increasing. wireman
Winter timetable has started, our visits have returned to afternoons after our summer evening meetings. This week , normality returns. The N clss shown snaking a goods away from Wimhill has been in the work shop after chewing its main nylon? gears. A replacement set was obtained from Bachmann and duly fitted by Nick. I have been quite keen to rebuild the control panels at Coleborne for some time, the idea mainly falling on deaf ears. However, Nick has now thought it to be an excellent winter project, so dicussions and work has started . First things first. The age old problem of room around the control area has come under discussion and the decision made to completely remove the work bench built in 2018. ( Page 13. December 2018 ) This has been rebuilt in the spray / weathering shed. Dismantling and re-building was completed in one afternoon on Wednesday by Nick and Graham. Graham thinks he will have recovered by next Wednesday, although only for light duties, ie. tea making. Progress reports to follow. Regards Brian.
wireman
Graham did recover and set to work building shelfs for the various railway books and things which now needed a home after removing all the benches etc. as explained in my previous entry . First, a new shelf had to be fitted for the coffee and tea mugs. I thought it was a piece of UPvc off cut from a window sill but am told that because of the need for a chamfered edge on one side, drilling four holes for screws and cutting a couple of inches off one end, it is in fact a bespoke shelf, made specifically for its purpose. Plus the excellent book shelfs. At this rate, we will very soon be able to find things when required. Regards Brian ( wireman ). 5
wireman
First idea for the new control panel. The new panel will use single pole sprung centre off switches instead of the present push buttons, thus saving space and hopefully make the whole thing more intuitive. The panels shown below have been in use for some years now, so time for change. ( 2010 was when I think I wired them ) First, rough sketch of idea for new panel. As I noted earlier, a winter project, although first, a small work bench which can be pushed under the layout when not in use. Just enough for wheel cleaning, adding a detailing part etc. Regards Brian. ( wireman ) Edited October 31, 2021 by wireman 11
pitbull1845
Morning Brian, Go DCC with the points, you can set routes with ease and no need for a control panel, in fact you could have it on an ipad and touch the screen to change. Simple and only 2 wires! 1 2

RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted October 31, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 31, 2021 Using DCC to control points is technically elegant. Adding a touch-screen front end to anything connected to a model railway is anathema to some of us. 3 2

For those of use that don’t want to ‘drive the train or the track’ (to misquote the Digitrax strap line) it’s a necessity, but I understand your sentiment. It’s probably ‘cos I was a signal engineer not an operator. :-) Paul. 1
wireman
Before work begins on the new control panel, the small work bench has been made and fitted. As mentioned before this will be just for light maintenance / detailing on stock and will slide back under the layout when not in use, keeping the area clear for operating. I am always impressed by Nicks wood working skills, this one keeps up the standard. ( Probably won't stay this tidy for long though.) Regards Brian. pitbull1845
An impromptu visit to the junction yesterday meant I got to give my new #cavalex kba barrier wagons a run. For the benefit of these pictures, Coleborne and Wimhill is a large heritage line and 37421 is visiting for a mini diesel gala! Thanks to Nick for playing along and allowing a splash of colour! 37421 at Coleborne Junction goods yard. 37421 arrives at Wimhill. Lined up for a photo Barrier wagons in the sidings at Wimhill. Finally a bit of steam for the traditionalists. wireman
Its seems a long time ago that I mentioned constructing a new control panel. The pictures taken then have all disappeared from the blog but in the event, although bits were purchased for what was going to be a winter project, little progress was made. It is still going to be a winter project, just a different winter. ( Which winter ? ). Things have progressed though. Going back many years, when built the extention to Wimhill allowed a train to run from the bay, platform 1, to Wimhill. Trains coming down from Wimhill could not gain access to platform 1 if required, but would run into the loop on Platform 2. Shunting back to platform1. As this did not effect either up or down trains to Wimhill from the mainline the situation has remained. An idea was put forward to alter the track by the addition of a single slip allowing trains for Wimhill from platform 1. It was quickly realised that this would mean moving the loco shed entrance point to the slow main line. The place it was when the track was first laid. Hopefully this picture of the Peco templates will make the above ramblings clear. The first point after the one of the main line was looking at the possiblity for a spur to a small diesel fuel point. Without using a small radius Y point this was not possible. Most Locos here are six coupled wheel base plus a couple of eight and one of ten, quite impossible for a small radius Y. Next. Clearing the existing track, I hope the mising pictures can be restored in the future Regards Brian.
