K14
Depends whether you want to depict the securing bolts. 5 or 10 thou brass (or maybe plastikard) would be my choice - stick a slightly oversize piece to the old cabside windows with double-sided tape & use them as a filing template. A smidge of CA superglue wicked round from the inside would hold them in place.
RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted January 29, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 29, 2017 So right now, progress has been slowed due to one screw. Whatever i try to do, it will not come off. It's the one right underneath the front bogie. I believe that I am using the right screwdriver but the screw just will not turn. K14
That screwdriver is a good first choice, but I always find that you can't always get a good enough grip to apply sufficient force. Something with a better handle would be the next step:— https://www.radioshack.com/products/radioshack-6-piece-precision-electronics-screwdriver-set If that doesn't work, then it's time to get creative... what's it screwed into - metal or plastic? RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted January 31, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 31, 2017 Problem solved: I was thinking of soaking the body in 90% IPA for two hours ish, is that reasonable?
RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted February 1, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 1, 2017 A box came in the mail today, it's the basis for the future 5001 Llandovery Castle.
RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted February 4, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 4, 2017 Hi everyone, So I soaked the model in IPA for about 75 minutes and used a toothbrush to wipe the paint off of the model. Here are the results: Overall, it's a bad job. There are a few places where the plastic has been slightly damaged but I don't think it's a huge deal. What do you guys think? RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted February 4, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 4, 2017 I think you just need to put the chassis back on and you'll have your black king lol. Ive seen locos a lot worse than that after being stripped. Looking forward to the end result.
RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted February 4, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 4, 2017 I forgot to mention that I was a bit clumsy and I lost the brass effect on the safety valve. Any ideas on how to fix it?
RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted February 4, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 4, 2017 I forgot to mention that I was a bit clumsy and I lost the brass effect on the safety valve. Any ideas on how to fix it? I believe during the war the Safety Valve bonnet was painted over anyway so I'd leave it as it is. If you do want it brass, then some metallic paint would do the job easily. Regards, Hilux
RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted February 25, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 25, 2017 So the operation has been halted as the weather has been too cold lately to spray paint and I have been advised not to spray paint inside. RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted April 3, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 3, 2020 This is my first time with a spray can. I think I was overzealous with the can on the loco but not enough on the tender? Please comment.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted April 3, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 3, 2020 Another waft all over would not hurt. I was more concerned at the rough area on the smokebox door. I would try and smooth that down. Cheers, Ade.

Can you kindly describe how i would smooth out the smokebox?
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted April 3, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 3, 2020 I would give both another waft over. As the smokebox is the face of the loco, I think any imperfections there will always catch the eye. It would be worth spending a little time at this stage to get it just right. I would use a very fine wet and dry emery paper. You will then need to give it another coat or two of primer. Hope this helps? Cheers, Ade.
RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted April 5, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 5, 2020 (edited) 2nd coat of primer, used a bit of very fine sandpaper on the smokebox (did not have emery paper unfortunately). In the second picture, there's a bit of irregularity in texture nearer the front of the engine but I'm not sure if it's worth it to try to fix it with some more sandpaper. Also, how do I get back my pictures?
