Excellent progress!  :clapping:  :clapping:

It is a pity the OO got taken down, but my Dad never really operated it. It was briefly rebuilt, albeit alot shorter, but again nothing really happened.

I do highly recommend a fiddle yard, especially inside a shed/workshop. By the end I had about 3 rakes of wagons/carriages which I used on usual running session. It reduced time in setting the line up. I do miss the OO, and looking at those photos have reminded me about how much fun it was.

Looking forward to seeing a train run up that spiral!

Morning vjonesiong, many thanks, yes agree was sad would of being a great to see the trains running.

I am planning a four track staging yard may be five being on a budget holds me back but I get the there, when my station complex expands, I  have on the drawing board a vertical staging yard in the garden shed.

I can't wait to run the first test loco on the spiral was hopping April but not to be taking a lot longer than  I thought, this weekend I am spending a few days on the layout, Friday finishing off the corner spiral module and heading over to the last station module finishing the bus wiring, go two more bus wire panels that slide up inside the module  , aiming for the end of June.

How is your new layout going.

Morning Tony. Your plan sounds good. Its worth keeping some stock stored on the track, then trains can run at a moments notice. Keep plugging away, you'll soon get there. And please take a video when you do!

Out of curiosity are you going DCC or simple DC? Would love to see your progress with the electrics.

I've started a topic over in another section (see http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/121588-the-dragons-friendly-light-railway/). Like you I'm in the middle of construction, and I'm trying to push myself to get the trackbed down this year.

Hi MRG Hooper, many thanks I would say the same as well with your links on 3/D printing 00m scale Indian railways, could you be able to print a row of 10 pedestal fencing and what would it cost, I am modelling Sydney Central in 1/87 scale and the station building has a heap of those fencing,, have never heard of 00m before is the scale larger than 00 or smaller.

Afternoon vjoniong, yeah I could also turn those tacks into a container or piggy back yard, the length of the yard is 18feet and going to have at the other end track that will move along to each tack so the locos  can run move out the way.

Wont be going DCC straight away later on I will be, I have two remote control throttles I be using for the main line and two walk around type for local use or on the main line if I have more the two people running on the  layout., I hope to be starting on my main control panel after the spiral is finished built , painted and track laid down.

That is pure awesome your garden railway which is coming along nicely I could do the same but my yard isn't all level like ours same with the pergola the car pot is 12 inches difference to the  pergola, a pity as  I could of moved more out into the yard pity.

I am planning a busy weekend this Easter, have being busy in looking at a different way to bold the spiral corner module to the first station and finishing off the  bus panels and wring.

Everyone have a great Easter

Evening vjonesiong, no worries be keeping a close eye on your progress as well very good work there.

Do you go away for Easter, hate to think what your roads are like holiday time ours are bad enough and can't cope with the traffic  north and south high ways. and 4 lanes wide on the south coast WHY same  up Caboolture north coast WHY, and they charge double the price for a unit close to the beach.

Enjoy Easter.

Had a busy day today but I didn't achive a lot, worked on the corner spiral module cutting the legs and screwing the legs onto the module and adding hinges, have decided to modify the module by cutting it back a foot where the suburban track is and cutting back 18 inches on the temporary main line. I may be best buying an off cut piece from Bunning tomorrow., the problem is they come in 1200mm long 19mm short of 4ft , I will try out joining the two pieces together first to make 4ft.have done that before with no problems, sadly the track has to come off and unsolder the feeder wires.

Pic one and Sydney Central suburban rail bridge I be modelling with the aches as well showing the path way arch both sides of the street, the pics are of  street view from Google Earth  I use a lot what I am modelling , pic two and the SC bus lane as well, pic 3 is both modules together, where the missing sleepers  on the first module are is the join for the lift out section, with the lift out section down I am modelling East Perth station terminal where the Indian Pacific ends her journey across Australia will make hat journey one day.

Another day on the corner module again tomorrow modifying it, having trouble joining the two modules together, this will sort it out, making the lift out section 4feet long, more pics tomorrow., hope it is ok to post Google earth pics

I prefer to integrate the railway into the garden without a baseboard except under stations.  Apart from one terminus station it barely affects the garden at all, just the step in the wall shown, it crosses two paths on the level and runs along walls and around the boundary of the lawn before diving through an 8 ft or so tunnel to a station built on a ledge in a grass bank.  Its the complete opposite to the Original Post but achieves the same object of not having raised wooden baseboards impinging on the garden when the railway is not running.  The downside is the very high maintenance is involved in ground level railways,

Hi David, that pure awesome more pics please, yeah I would but on a budget I am limited and can't have a perameant layout this is the best way to go how I love to do what you have done and my pergola araea isn't level 12 inches difference, has worked out well, I want to model the raod as welll infront of  Sydney Station and can leave the the road for the East Perth station scene.

Have modified the first station module lift out section and now is 4feet long fits in quite well need to strengthen the extended section with 19mm pine timber to hide the bus wiring, also I modified the spiral corner module will tak somce pics tomorrow when I set up the two modules to see how they fit  together. Coming along nicely will have to re-nail the track and  the bus wiring, this Time I will have to solder in place the brass coated fish plates on the other end of the lift out section where the set square is.

Update on the rebuild of the first station module and spiral corner module, a lot of work ahead modelling a road to pass in under the new extended rail bridges, I have found some more pics of Sydney Central street scene I be modelling around the station building with the road on the lower level. and this scene become a different station scene as the Indian Pacific pulls out of off Sydney a very quick fast clock pulling into East Perth terminal at the end of the day journey takes 3 days.

The station complex be built in two stages the best way to do it on a budget, can't build Sydney station build till then  taking up two modules wide being over 4feet in width will stand out so a couple of engineering feats with the bridge at the back of the layout.

Stage one be modelled on East Perth terminal and later will have four tracks for a staging yard  to become station track for Sydney Central, moving the staging yard into the garden shed becoming a vertical yard will run off the spiral, the extra throttle become a local throttle and forth throttle become late DCC.by passing the main DC  control panel, the two mainline throttles are remote throttles.

The pics I have loaded in sequence showing my modules and real pic what I am modelling, the road level scene come later  and looking back on the second last post I be changing the 3/4  inch ply sides to 100mmx12mm ply sides mainly because of the road being 20 inches wide with the second pathway tunnel on the other side of the road, I like design the modules so I can add on as I go.

Pic four and the pic after is East Perth terminal where the IP ends her journey across Australia which one day  I hope to go on, the last two  pics, pic 5 showing the ply top pulled out the way to show later Sydney Central station road level access to the suburban platform,.

Pic 5 and last pic is what I be modelling with the ply top lifted out, looking at the last pic left hand side of the pic is what the scene be modelled on lot of work there can't wait.

Hi vloneslong, many thanks the progress of the layout going to long going once I get past the the front spiral corner and first station module rebuild be easy, achived a lot on Saturday di da lot of cutting with the battery saw finely cut the last curve to the lower level of the spiral connectiong the spiral deck to the back of the layout, I sill have recut new legs for the spiral just as well with the new sides of the spiral corner fixed up the bow in it. It has 100mm sides on it now so I plan to remodel the join of the first curve to the spiral, the old way isn't as easy as I thought had trouble pushing it into the other module big improvements there, I want to make it very easy to set the layout up, the wiring is plug and play set up.

The rail  bridge section is coming along nicely as well the pic with the bus in it is where the   tunnel will go pedestrian tunnel is going wanted to check the clearance in the height wise, will cut out that tunnel first one on the other side as well, this scene be a good viewing point.

The double deck cable stay bridge,, the sides I cut will become the frame work holding the road deck up and the cable stays , making them out of 5mm dowel, too much work using wire, each section is 6foot long and will have half of the main tower, each section will be bolted together , my bridge will have 305mm clearance would like to have 600mm not to be.

The bridge is modelled on the Oresund bridge bridging the huge gap between Denmark and Sweden , I be only modelling the main span and that is cut back to fit it in will still look good when finished planning to only build the rail deck first and the sides of the bridge so I can attach the cable stays too the full height of my tow is 7feet and the tower is 3inches deep and inch and a half wide.

Guess what I am even going a step further modelling a RORO ship, found one that has a line drawing and will just fit under the bridge, my ship be a water line model , come in handy as I have a spine car rain with 25 spine cars and trailers awesome site indeed, I love long trains going to add on another set  of 5 to make 30 spine cars, got two sets of container trains as well working on wheat silo train and later oil train,  train and a mixed  manifest train as well, longer the better.

I have some British trains as well, my favourite loco being the famous Flying Scott 4472 she has two tenders and this will blow you away, the water tender is powered as well, both motors are 5pole gee she can pull 11 coaches on the clubs layout I used to belong to not any more, she will  pull 16 cars I reckon on my layout., got to fix some cheap coaches I have, they derailed on the clubs layout a lot..

More progress work tomorrow in the afternoon ANZAC day big march in Brisbane in the morning watch it on TV.

Phowar! You have quite a project on your hands! I really look forward to seeing the bridge, thats going to be one hell of a structure, even in HO.

I like the idea of the roll on/roll off ferry as part of the layout. I attended an exhibition last year and saw this layout:

I think the harbour side of railways is much overlooked.

Oh and happy ANZAC day!

Hi vjonesiong, many thanks , yeah sure is the bridge is going to be the main feature of the layout in some ways modules in its own right something different, again too much module top why I have cut back the  two front modules for and adding a scene .

Yes have to agree what you are saying about modelling water fronts and harbours, thanks for that video link of that layout, I figures it had to be modelled on the build up to D-Day , very awesome  indeed, there is other area you don't see is airports and planes, Have a project on the go modelling 737 fuselages for a train load built the first fuselage out of 1mm cardboard wasn't happy with the way it turned as the cardboard soaked the paint up making it darker.

Planning a second737 fuselage nest series up 737-800 and it be built out of plastic styrene last one took a month to build and I built it wrong anyway after seeing a bloke build one in 1/35th scale, will be using some of his technics, got 6 planned, #/D printing be the way to go but very expensive.

Back to the RORO ship I am going to have to do some homework here and get hold of a scale plan of any RORO ship, the way I worked out the height she was over 365mm high from the water line, decided to get out one of my trailers .to work the height out a lot lower and fitted in under the bridge, ringing a model boat club this week and my local hobby to see if he can get hold a model plastic kit.

I did some more work on the two modules yesterday afternoon and finished the lift out section ready for painting now, today will start filling up the holes with plaster, the spiral corner module I am improving the way the first curved section is bolted to the module was having too much trouble joining them up , give my wife a break for the cutting for a while, next week start cutting out the sides of the bridge.

Found your post , gee you sure are moving along well with the construction out of brick we can get that brick you are using over here but quite expensive, does your wife help you in the build, my wife isn't interested in the hobby, only ask for help if needed do the lot myself.

An interesting proposal Tony. I've not seen anything like that over here, I guess in part because you can't transport aircraft on our railways because the loading gauge is so narrow. What about a piece of small drain pipe or water pipe for the fuselage?

Thanks for the comments re the railway. Bricks aren't terribly cheap here either but I had a plentiful supply left over from the building work we did on the house. I'm hoping that this railway will last me a few years unlike my previous incarnations.

Hi vjoneslong, no worries will keep a check on your progress, the way I am building my layout so long as I get a few years running out of it, the whole layout modules fit in the garden shed stacked up \, I am yet to cut strips of ply to screw to the curved sections to stop them from bowing and twisting while in storage, I will only be running the layout in the cooler months of the year, have designed the layout so I can set some of it up to run trains on those rainy days .

Yeah all to do with the loading , same here even though our loading is different to yours we can't have US trains running over here a lot of their wagons are double is size to ours, but I can't work it out the Flying Scot is a huge loco bigger than ours proved it when she visited us in 1988, a same I wasn't into trains back then as she visited Brisbane double heading with 3801

Back to the 737 fuselage project, I have thought of piping getting it the right size still need to shaft the two ends, I even tried turning a piece of pine but found it to hard to shape, thinking of balsa wood, it also comes down to detail on the fuselage like where the wings bolt onto the fuselage and they have a special cradle the fuselage bolts to you can see right through,. you will see in the pic.

The US are crazy they build the fuselages on the east coast and ship by rail to the west coast Seattle and now the tail sections are built over seas they also shipped the 757 by rail too because the fuselage was the same diameter, I plan to build one 757 fuselage, being so long the 757 was shipped in three sections., the 767 couldn't be shipped by rail only spare parts.

I am also finding out what the different parts are of the hull of a ship measurement wise,, I worked out the height of the Hull , still working out the height of the whole  ship, works out to be  still like to get hold of plans of a RORO ship, on going research.

Hi Tony.

Didn't they modify Flying Scotsman to be able to run in Australia?

Also with the RORO ship, could you not model it just above the waterline, or are you planning on making one you can sail?

Hi Vjoneslong

No they didn't not like they did in the US tour, all they did was have special name  boards made for tours the Flying Scot  there is a DVD on the Aussie tour, toAlice Springs and tour to Western Australian where she was put on a ship back home.

I plan to build two models, fist one a water line model, I found a PDF file on a British Tor line RORO ship, would like to model a ship for  that scene want to model a container ship as well, planning a container port on day.

I didn't do much today the side the first spiral curve fits into I finished but still a bit more to do between the corner module and first station module, got  to do some drawing tonight  to do on the arches of the rail bridge. and  pathway arches.

Pic two is how I bolt the curve sections together, the track line up perfect on the joins no movement at all and only two screws or bolts.

I've done a 4mm container ship, was good fun. Lego made a good building medium for a lot of it due to the scale brick size. Not sure how well it would work for 3.5mm but I have seen a Dutch layout at an exhibition with one.

It would of being a shock when the US  put a cow catcher on the Flying Scot and larger light up the top of the front of the loco, we don't have them over here, not many pics of the US tour and sadly they didn't bring over the water tender on the Aussie tour, ours were used, was a big success.

My curves on my layout are 7ft radius even the spiral is except the large S bend its curve is 6ft and the last curve has a 4ft half radius curve the trains will fly around them with ease, can't wait to run the Flying Scot, got two FS's with different name badges on  them, I think to do with the duel tender and single tender.

The lift out section on the first station is read for painting, still have a lot of work in that area, be left for later, the  track curve closer to the module join pic two  I will replace, I use those computer brass coated boards cut into strips to hold the track down on th module join works well .

HI Satans's Goldfish, WOW what a build do to have the measurements of the height of the conainer ship will be slightly biger than 87 scale, I checked out your other links, just pure awesome, if only I had a few thousand to spare, I am pushing on, you built your own containers as well what did you use to get the corragated iron affect, had a go at scratch building smooth sided refrigerated containers, bout a heap of the frig units, will rebuild them. I am building up my double stack container well wagons got 15  so far after more, also have the 60ft and 40ft flat container wagons 23 of them longer the better, love  those long trains with two or three locos up front.

I found another RORO truck ferry this one has containers as well, will have to be a water line mode, if I make the bridge height water clearance three inches higher she will fit in fine , Finnbreeeze, I found a PDF line drawing of the side of the ship actually the ship drawing is of the British Tor line Tor Jutlandia and found out Finnlines have the same design ship ( Finnbreeze) 12 to 15inches, wont be dropping the height of the spiral 6 inched be 4 inches will have to climb up another 7 inches 25foot long ramp.

did a full size plan drawing of the suburban rail bridge crossing over Eddy AVE, worked out well , not 20inches is 22 inches , marked out a piece of 12mm ply of the pedestrian tunnel and three land road ready to cut out tomorrow., will finish the spiral corner module tomorrow and start painting, moving along nicely taking my time.

More pics pleas of your container ship and measurements be great, I plan to built two ships second one with a complete hull, with working prop second hobby .

Tony from down under cold Friday 7 degrees this morning.
