Would a few layers of satin or gloss varnish help hide the build lines on the car windows?

Steven B.

I’m hoping that’s the case. I left some constructive feedback with the seller who is aware of the issue. I should get my next order over the weekend. For the price they are pretty good...and only £2.50 for the unpainted ones.

My order arrived yesterday including a Rover SD1....I’ll pop some pictures up tomorrow. The seller has increased the number of items available again, including some twin packs.

I have just received these two from redandy, a Ford Escort and a Morris Marina in primer:

3D printed cars

I used to own cars like these, so they will be painted light blue and dark blue, and suitable registration numbers attached. I already have a whitemetal Ford Anglia and Volvo 850 estate, and an Oxford Models Westfalia VW Camper Van, other vehicles I have owned. I suppose, I need to start looking for a Vauxhall Viva HB90, Hillman Avenger GLS, Wartburg, Vauxhall Cavalier 2000 GLS, Volvo 240 estate, Fiat Tipo and MGB Roadster to complete the early years of my motoring history before company cars came into the mix.

I hope the front wheels don't fall off the Marina, like they did on my real one.

I've also got a couple on order - for a comparison with vehicles I've already got. I'll probably try Klear for the windows - aeromodellers use it to make plastic canopies clearer and more like glass. Also being a high quality acrylic gloss varnish with self leveling properties it should help fill any ridges/depressions. It'll be a matter of ensuring it dries as wanted.

If you're after Vauxhall Cavaliers, Volvo 240 estates and Fiat Tipos then RailNscale offer those models.

It would probably be worth varnishing the inside of the windows as well as the outside, assuming they're to some degree hollow.

They are hollow, but have very small access holes in the floor. They are also very thin and could be damaged easily, I suspect.

Thanks, I had spotted them. DM Toys also have a Wartburg, albeit 1:160, but it is the estate version.

I’ve found that if you ask RailNscale to resize things for 1/148 they will do so.

The stratification stepping seems quite pronounced on the bonnet and roof. Do you plan to try and smooth it down? And it looks like the wing mounted rear view mirrors have been snapped off. Did that happen in transit? ;-)

My undercoat Transit has also lost a wing mirror (nearside) but the print lines don’t seem as pronounced as yours.....although I can feel them under my fingernail. I’m going smooth mine, I’ve done two of the marinas and the roofs are a lot better, snapped the wing mirrors off them. They are very, very fragile.

I did post an upside picture of the painted cars and van on the previous page.

Here's my two that arrived today. The stratification ridges aren't overly pronounced but do exist and would probably benefit from a little rubbing down where possible. Details are nicely rendered and fine (like the rain strips/gutters and door handles):

However, in comparison with two other similar 1:148 scale SWB Ford Transit models that I have (R Parker, cast white metal in green and RainNscale, 3D printed in beige) the new one looks, particularly the roof, to be somewhat thinner and a little smaller and not a lot larger than the Escort (above):

Perhaps it's 1:160 scale or maybe the other two are oversize (although they are pretty much the same size)?  Apologies for the cruddy photo.

I asked the seller when I first saw these what Scale they were and he stated 1/148.

Mk1 Transit should be 4192mm overall length. 1960mm wide, over the bumpers.

1960mm width equates to 13.25mm at 1/148 N gauge scale. The RailNscale and R Parker versions are pretty much spot on while the Redandy one is rather narrow at a little less than 12mm. According to this:

https://www.transitcenter.uk/transit-mk1-data-specification.php the short wheelbase/low roof version is 4192mm long (scale 28.32mm) and the long wheelbase/high roof is 4944mm.

The scale width of the Mk2 Escort seems to be correct although the length is probably about 1mm too long.

My sources give a length of 173" (4390mm) or 174". Width agrees. Wheelbase is 106".

I got my dimensions from a Transit spares company on line but it did look odd. They show the Mk2 as 4563mm, I know they increased the bonnet end to fit a newer engine in.

2692mm wheelbase.

Found a Ford brochure that shows 4425mm

It looks like you are all set to create a scene from "The Sweeney", all you need is a Mk.II Jag.

I actually will be. Need a Mk1 Granada for the main car, having watched a few episodes recently the other cars the Sweeney Use include Mk3 Cortinas, dark blue and white versions, neither yet done by ODC. They also have a Marina.

You need a Ford Consul GT (rather than a Granada) for the main squad car:

although it is basically a Granada Mk1 - if you can get one in 1:148 scale please let me know

Back in the 1970's, I did some work up in the wilds of Scotland, and we had a Grandad Granada as a hire car from Godfrey Davies. One evening, watching The Professionals in B&W on the TV at the Applecross Hotel (only BBC 1 was receivable there then), they were using an identical car, with the number plate one digit off from ours.
