Do you mind me asking what method you’ve used for painting these tiny vehicles?

I model 1980s era N gauge and I wouldn’t mind getting a couple of the cars mentioned a few posts earlier (the Maestro appeals to me), but they don’t half look fiddly to paint!

That’s a shame, mine haven’t arrived yet. I have R Parker and a Redandy767 ones to compare with.

Is the CF similarly small?

For the main body I’ve used spray cans and brushed on acrylic paint. Small details are touched in with fine point paint pens, red, orange, white, silver and black. Other details are painted in with small brushes and a steady hand. I also use an illuminated magnifier.

 

I think Grahame has used similar items.

Afternoon everyone.

 

I’m just working my way back through this fantastic thread (I really don’t know why I haven’t looked at properly before actually) and I was wondering if anyone produced something like a classic 1980s/90s Scania 112 or a Volvo 10 Turbo 6 (F10) tractor unit and trailer in N gauge?

 

I’m very taken with the Ford Cargo because that fits in perfectly with my era and I used to work on the things when I was an HGV apprentice at British Road Services.

As an aside we used to service all the Lynx lorries that were based in our yard at Exeter and they had a large fleet of Leyland Terriers - which required copious amount of Easystart on a winter’s morning!

A Scania cab is available through Shapeways and RailNscale do the Volvo F10. The Tomytec tractor units and trailers scrub up well and can be easily be modified. The Gibb’s trailer has been converted to a Reefer. The Edwin Shirley trailer is scratchbuilt. The TOE trailer is also a modified Tomytec one.

Lovely models, I’m very taken taken with the Volvo F10 I must say. 

Thanks for the advice, I think I’ll get a couple of things and report back.

Not promising that I’ll achieve the standards you’ve attained on here mind!

I’ve just finished painting a small batch of cars, Allegro, Maxi, Princess and Marina. All from Redandy767 on eBay…..just realised I’ve missed painting the quarter lights on the Marina….another job for tomorrow.

Tomorrow I should get a Mk1 Transit, BMW 2002 and a Mk1 Fiesta finished along with another Maxi.

Camera phone closeups are never kind but here's todays results, they aren't quite finished but I am pleased with the progress... Roll on the to the windows stage! From left to right, Princess, Datsun Cherry, Austin Allegro, Ford Granada and Rover 100 these are all from my range.

I did a a bit of measuring today both the Transit and CF should have wheelbases of 2690mm which in 1/148 is rounded down to 18mm. They are both 17mm which makes them 1/160 scale.

 

My Transit is very sticky does anyone know is that just that the resin needs washing?

 

The Redandy 767 Transit is pretty well spot on for WB but looks a bit narrow. The other transit looks better proportioned

Yep, I thought the Redandy version was too narrow. And the Replitek one too small overall. I don't understand why anyone would want to produce a 1:160 scale right hand drive version - it doesn't appear to suit any particular market. 

 

The RailNScale and R Parker 1:148 trannies seem the best. But we're waiting on the N'tastic version.

IS it a resin printer output? If so implies the model hasn't been cured completely, stick it out in the sun for a bit. Oops, forgot you are in the UK, UV light then.

Yep, similar. I clean (with cream cleaner) after any smoothing required, prime and give an overall top coat from Halfords or Humbrol aerosols, then pick out the various details. I don't use an illuminated magnified as I'm short sighted and can focus on models held close to my eyes. These are all N gauge 3D printed vehicles (from various suppliers):

HI all Just been having a look at Butlerprinted models web site. Yes I know they are military vehicles but there are a few that might be of use and they are cheap compared to some. Its a shame that  the cabs are solid( might be able to drill out the windows and clean up) . then fill with plastic glass.

They are not actually solid, the interior is a honeycomb so are fairly easy to hollow out in 1/76 at least.

Package arrived from Shapeways today. I've given them a scrub with cream cleaner and a dusting of grey primer:

These are the Ford Cortina Mk4s from RedAndy. I managed  to knock off a pair proportion of door mirrors when handling them during painting.

Also shown the finished Mk1 Escort van, the EA van and CF Van have had their first top coat.

Here's some more vehicles that arrived in the post this morning. The Foden FG truck is RTP from ODC and the two cars, a Cortina Mk2 and Rover P6, are 3D printed from Redandy (on ebay) and supplied painted (as in the pic).

 

The ODC truck is a big improvement on their earlier cast metal body models and has nice clear flush glazing with a decent level of paint finish. The radiator trim is particularly fine and neat. And Redandy appears to have improved his paint finish also with finer and neater trim. They do also include wing/door mirrors and number plates although the windows are a bit milky and a little opaque (but probably acceptable as light does penetrate).

 

 

I must crack on with painting the details on my mOrris/CMAC cars and glazing them.

The Morris Minor Van that came with the Bedford CF and Diesel Transit is unfortunately massively oversized……and the brittle nature of the resin resulted in me snapping a big lump off the Transit when trying to tidy up the cab window.

Are these printed using the standard resin meant for SLA printers?   I've found that way to brittle for day to day handling or any fiddling around with the finished model, adding 10% flex resin to the standard resin turns it into a material more akin to plastic model kits, things don't  shatter when dropped or twisted slightly.
