Buy & Sell to CLOSE

Might it be worth taking the Buy & Sell images off the homepage (I see that they are no longer links)?

I hadn't realise the B&S had closed and had to search for this thread when I found the links didn't work, I filter out the BRM forum as I model foreign stuff. I was expecting any announcement to be in the Site Information  forum

While on the subject, might it be worth un-stickying the threads about the Classified and Marketplace in the Site Information forum?

As the formal Buy & Sell has now departed is there any informal way to offer things to fellow RMWebbers?

I recently bought a coach kit on eBay that was advertised as having EM wheels. When it arrived it had double the quantity of P4 coach wheels!

I therefore now have 8 axles of P4 14mm coach wheels that I have no use for. Any offers?

Any news on a replacement for this ? Possibly a return for the classifieds ? I think it's pretty well documented they were missed. I must admit I have used RMWeb alot less since the classifieds demise having found a thriving selling community on Facebook.

I can't say I miss a place to sell items, for me this place is about the exchange of ideas and somewhere to learn something.

If that's not what you want there is always Ebay, which has proved useful to buy and sell stuff.

I prefer not to use Ebay. I associate it more with scalpers, who buy stuff new and then sell it on at vastly inflated prices. They're no different to ticket touts.

That said, if you're prepared to wade through the mire of greed, you can get some good stuff from people genuinely passing unwanted items on.

I can certainly appreciate though how an RMweb member would prefer their surplus item(s) to be passed on to somebody else in the community, rather than a complete stranger on eBay.

Likewise whilst I know things didn't always go smoothly with Buy & Sell, I would regard most of the regular contributors to the forum as 'friends' and would expect them to be less likely to 'try something on' if I purchased an item off them than off someone I didn't know on eBay.

I cannot  agree  with  this statement   Having  been  an  eBay  user  for  several  years 80% SELLING  20% Buying  I have  never  sold  anything  for  an  inflated  price,  nor  have  I  purchased  anything  which  was  not  as  described,  you will find  me   on  eBay  as    Stevesoller

I would  of  course  welcome   the  return  of 'Buy & Sell'  or  something  similar  I used  it  when  it  was  available on  here  many  times!

I wouldn't get too hung up on it.

People buying things at the "right" time and selling for a profit is essentially what capitalism is founded on. It's no different to playing the stock market or buying a house you don't live in.

Not saying that it's OK - but it's certainly nothing new...

The great majority of items I've bought on ebay have been fairly described and at a fair price. A small number were sub-standard, which were sent back, without problems. Ebay sides with the buyer, which is sensible, or the whole thing would collapse. There are often cases of people offering shoddy goods or silly prices - usually this is obvious, and just ignore them. Having said all that, I do feel ebay need to refine their website, it is awkward to navigate by modern standards. A more modern competitor would find it easy to make inroads.

Edited for a spelling mistake and to add: Don't get caught up in a bidding war. just decide what the item is worth to you, and stick to that as your maximum bid.

Whats the name of the Facebook forum?  I have a load of stuff that in the past I would have disposed of via the Buy and Sell which living in the GWN was very useful.  Because the market is very limited over here and because I don't have the forum media, it is just sitting in my basement.

The classified section that used to be on here offered a platform where you could sell without being stung for comission.

I developed a fair few good relationships with like minded modellers through the classifieds who I learnt alot from.

The classifieds have been closed for 3+ years, what have you done in the interim ?

I can certainly appreciate though how an RMweb member would prefer their surplus item(s) to be passed on to somebody else in the community, rather than a complete stranger on eBay.

Sadly that is not what happened, if you read back you'll find that Andy had quite a few problems sorting out disputes as just because someone was on RMWeb it didn't mean they were a modeller. Many people will look for an opportunity to purchase for a reduced price and then sell on elsewhere (as happened).

Having sold a deceased friends estate, mainly through the classifieds then the remainder through B&S I'd say that there are quite a few 'chancers' on here who will take advantage if they can.

Sadly no one's your friend when it comes to handing over money.

Hankered longingly every waking hour for the classifieds ....  What do you think I have done?

If you refer to my original post, It mentions what I have done. I have merely mentioned that the classifieds were a big asset that I miss.

So you did.

I didn't state that all Ebay sellers were scalpers, only that some of them are and, unfortunately, they seem to be the top of the pile. I have bought some very good Hornby Maunsells off Ebay before now, and the Hornby Southern Suburban train pack (which was sold as new, but the loco was damaged, ne'vermind).

But the Southern Suburban coach pack, which originally retailed for less than £75, is now going for ca. £175. Yikes! I guess that apologists (not a comment aimed at you!) might say something along the lines of "fetching its worth", and good luck to them.

Not sure I'd agree with this - Ebay should be neutral.  Unfortunately there are chancers who'll claim non-delivery, damage, not as described, return different items, pinch bits etc. etc. and it's the seller who'll usually lose.

As for the feedback - that's a joke.  I got ripped off to the tune of 120 quid (claimed back via paypal) due to non delivery. And Ebay then would'nt give me the chance to leave feedback. So Mr. Scrote still appears to have 100% feedback. He later disappeared from Ebay, so I'm guessing his account was terminated.

I'm sure some people use Ebay as a free payday loan system by selling items and not posting them (or they never existed in the first place).  Easy way to borrow a few quid for a month or so at zero interest

I use eBay quite a bit. Most sellers and buyers seem to be fair, genuine and honest
However, you only need one or two bad apples to ruin it, and lately I've come across a few, and know pals who have had bad experiences....
It's a shame, as for years I found it to be trouble-free....

I do miss the buy & sell section on rmweb though. I never bought or sold anything via it, but now find myself in a position where I'd like to sell some stuff
and I'd prefer to pass certain items on to other rmweb members, who will appreciate the items. It also gives buyers some background knowledge / info on the seller, and in the case of a kit build or layout,
the seller can often trace the progress / development of the item they're buying

However, I can see that it could be a headache to Andy Y to run, and moreover, to sort out other peoples problems, should they arise.....

I am still working on stuff but it still take a little time as I need it to integrate with other systems in the company as there will be a charge for any classified adverts, in some form or another.

I don't agree with your editing of my comment. There is, in my opinion at least, a clear difference between straightforward capitalism and scalping/opportunism. Selling for a profit is what makes the (capitalist) world go around, but the markup is the differentiator: 10%, OK; 50%, hmmm; 100+%, you're extracting the urine.
