Not actual modelling, but this just arrived. Should be helpful.

I'm also considering painting the WKR'S coaching stock a similar colour to my nails...

An excellent book; I have a copy although it's over taken by events to a degree.  Some of the loco types created by conversion are now available as RTR.

The loco I intend to bodge together is available RTR, but where's the fun in that?

A rebuild of the Mehano 0-4-0, with the addition of parts from Bachmann, Hornby and Dapol.

It qualifies as a double Pugbash as it uses both parts from the Dapol L&Y and Hornby Caley examples.

Very nice, Vanguard. Though, do you plan to alter the cylinders to be more realistic or just leave it as-is?

New weapons for bodging! I might be able to cut a straight line now :D

Just make sure your thumbs and fingers are well clear of those razor saws!

It's more my nails I'm worried about :D

Now I know why you bought the razor saws. With those nails you could need another pack of saws to deal with the nails!

Can confirm that the razor saw is an amazing tool. Hacked off some of the 14xx metal chassis to give room for the trailing bogie, which I'll be scratchbuilding as the H class has a distinctive short wheelbase bogie.

Bogie in position is just for show. The flared bunker is pretty but it's a right pain in the posterior!

Hello All,

I was intending to repair this little Jouef H0 0-6-0T but on closer inspection the crankpin holes on the nasty brittle plasticky wheel inserts are too cracked and broken. I think a bash beckons...

I think it might look quite natty as an 0-4-2T - can anyone suggest any donor chassis/mechanisms that might be suitable please?

Peter.

My bash above is using an Airfix 14xx with the huge motor, though the Hornby and Dapol ones have a smaller motor

Not sure about r-t-r 0-4-2s, but somewhere on RMWeb there was a Dapol Terrier chassis cut down into an 0-4-0 to power a jackshaft drive diesel shunter. For a small loco (the one above looks pretty titchy) it might be a useful approach.

Sophia and Pat, thanks for the suggestions.  Firstly I went and dug my Terrier out of the cupboard for comparison:

The two are very close in size and it looks like a Terrier mechanism would fit nicely without too much cutting. However I also found a running Hornby 14xx  chassis only on eBay for what I thought was a good price, and it should be with me by Wednesday.

My first attempt at building a trailing bogie. It needs some weight to hold the rear end down but overall, not a disaster. The bolt will be chopped down to accommodate the motor

I said it wasn't a disaster, but I was slightly wrong. To use a hole already in the chassis the bogie sat too far back once the test body was on. A bit of chopping later and it looks better. Just need to find a way to attach it again

The 14xx chassis was waiting when I got back this afternoon. A quick trial fitting shows that getting the body to fit is going to require some major surgery with tolerances being very snug.

Hmm. So to recap; a terrier 0-6-0 chassis fits without too much bashing, whereas an 0-4-2 involves heavy-duty slicing n' dicing?

Challenge accepted! Fetch the razorsaw!! :^)

As feasability studies go I think this has got potential. The next step will involve slicing chunks out of the chassis mazak casting to get the cab/tanks to sit lower, and getting the front splashers/buffer beam height and proportions right might be a bit tricky...
