Vanguard 5374 Posted March 5, 2020 Share Posted March 5, 2020 A rebuild of the Mehano 0-4-0, with the addition of parts from Bachmann, Hornby and Dapol. Hacked off some of the 14xx metal chassis to give room for the trailing bogie, which I'll be scratchbuilding as the H class has a distinctive short wheelbase bogie. I think a bash beckons... I think it might look quite natty as an 0-4-2T - can anyone suggest any donor chassis/mechanisms that might be suitable please? Not sure about r-t-r 0-4-2s, but somewhere on RMWeb there was a Dapol Terrier chassis cut down into an 0-4-0 to power a jackshaft drive diesel shunter. Firstly I went and dug my Terrier out of the cupboard for comparison: The two are very close in size and it looks like a Terrier mechanism would fit nicely without too much cutting. Sophia NSE Posted March 10, 2020 Share Posted March 10, 2020 (edited) My first attempt at building a trailing bogie. It needs some weight to hold the rear end down but overall, not a disaster. The bolt will be chopped down to accommodate the motor I said it wasn't a disaster, but I was slightly wrong. To use a hole already in the chassis the bogie sat too far back once the test body was on. A bit of chopping later and it looks better. A quick trial fitting shows that getting the body to fit is going to require some major surgery with tolerances being very snug. Hmm. So to recap; a terrier 0-6-0 chassis fits without too much bashing, whereas an 0-4-2 involves heavy-duty slicing n' dicing? Challenge accepted! Fetch the razorsaw!! :^) As feasability studies go I think this has got potential. The next step will involve slicing chunks out of the chassis mazak casting to get the cab/tanks to sit lower, and getting the front splashers/buffer beam height and proportions right might be a bit tricky... 10 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
