So, what do you do if you fancy a Southern C class and don't want to shell out on Bachmann prices? You get yourself an Airfix LMS 4F and a GBL C class and start hacking!

The C class comes apart eventually

I accidentally sliced through the wires connecting the loco to the tender

Eventually though, we get this. I'm experimenting with shortening the chasm between loco and tender so hopefully that will work

Lovely work.
I run two Airfix 4F's, still with their origional power-drives. They have run well since the 80's when I bought them from Cheltenham Model Centre during their Airfix sell-off.
I wouldn't change them for anything.
Regards,
Chris.

Inspiring stuff, Sophie. Couple of questions - is the Airfix 4F a tender drive model? And what did you have to do to the GBL body to get it to fit the 4F chassis?

Yes the 4F is tender drive and the only real modifications are to remove the plastic from the middle of the running plate and add a little plasticard packing under the cab. Also a little bit of shaving around the splashers so the wheels fit. It'll need plenty of weight in the boiler too

I like the blinds that hide the motor on the lower middle picture (3rd picture down). It is not often one will see this on the prototype.

Remember this....?

I was wondering if I could find a use for that spare Class 06 radiator grille.....what do you think?

Work in progress 1 - more later!

The 06's 15-spoke wheels have been replaced with more appropriate but slightly smaller 10-spokes, with some difficulty as I didn't realise the latter's throw was 3.5mm instead of 4mm, which didn't affect the wheels themselves but played havoc with the free-running MTK cast jackshafts which had to have new pins inserted 0.5mm inboard, not easy when the assemblies are solidly glued to the chassis! Done now, and it actually runs slightly better too. Good job I didn't toss it out of the window after all then!

I wanted to reclaim the 15-spoke wheels for use in my Nellie Restoration Project. Nellie was my first ever loco purchased in 1966 as part of the R24S set but has been chassis-less since 1976! It's progressing well, I've duplicated the 06's copperclad pick-up plate (which avoided having to 'reinvent the wheel'!) including the brass tube mountings for the MTK plastic brake shoes, and over the past couple of days I've just about sorted the chassis including new gearing. Work in progress 2.

I've posted this photo of the 'raw materials' previously in a different thread but it seems more appropriate here because of the Class 06 link - before work started (other than the Dock Shunter's Millholme brass wheels), my old Nellie body perched atop its chassis donor....

The intention is to make them look like a sort of 'matched pair', as if they belong to one company, and Nellie can only be blue so that's a clue to the colour the Dock Shunter will end up in!

I took a break from working on more modern models to do these, and it has been a lot of fun!

It would be a shame to change the dock shunters colour as it is stunning in the red.

I was surprised how glossy the bog standard red plastic came out in the lower photo, it hasn't been varnished, honest! But more work has been carried out since the top photo so a full repaint is definitely required......

I've been following this thread for a long time but have only just made my first Pugbash:

IMG_20210801_223701.jpg

It's a normal pug with the body trimmed and a 3d printed cab of my own design based on a L&YR cab I saw recently. The lining isn't the straightest but I have no red lining transfers.

Thanks for reading :)

Almost within the scope of this thread, this weekend I acquired this motorised (Tri-ang chassis) Airfix Std4 2-6-0 for £10.  It's just a bit of modelling history/nostalgia as this is what everybody used to build in the 1960s, 70s and 80s until Mainline started building realistic models.  The motor seems to be dis-engaged as the wheels turn but it should be fun to get it going.  It was a TENNER!  I have seen the regular kit made up and badly weathered (described as "professional") as a scrap loco for twice that.

Unfortunately it's another distraction from getting on with any Pugbashes of my own......

I remember when Quainton Road put the Fireless back in 'steam'. She was charged from Coventry No1 a NB 0-6-0 tank, that had benn modified with a steam take off.
The heady days of Quainton Road. I've always enjoyed going there!

Ideal for a battery-powered model. Rechargable battery of course, with hidden charging leads in the model steam hose. (The stationary boiler being part of the set, of course - got to be thinking Triangularly here.)

Yes, but a Continental H0 one: https://www.reynaulds.com/products/Liliput/103020.aspx

There’s a few others as well if you search. I’m sure I saw someone do quite a good Anglicisation/bash of one (very much in the spirit of this thread) somewhere online a few years ago. Though this isn’t strictly necessary as in reality several German-built fireless locos actually ran in Britain. The problem I would have with the RTR models (for use on British layouts) is that they seem to generally be large 0-8-0s and 0-6-0s rather than small 0-4-0s. An Andrew Barclay fireless design would be nice, but surely an RTR one would be less fun than building a Pugbash?

Please show us more of that NER long boiler you have lurking in the background it looks absolutely fantastic!

I'm currently working on a CAD (at a snail's pace) of it so I can have my own.

Liliput makes an 0-6-0 and 0-4-0 model in HO. Lovely models that run beautifully. They'd be a good base for converting to a British outline loco or just running as is.
Trix International made an 0-8-0 loco. Once again, lovely model. Barclay made a narrow gauge 0-8-0 which this loco could be converted to.
The problem being, is when I got my examples, they were being sold off in deals and the price of the 0-8-0, which I bought from Walton's in Altrincham was not as high as the price of quality european model railway kit is today.
Now, that would be a brave step for Hornby to produce a Barclay loco. They make the powerdrive already.
Chris.
