Little Muddle

Kevin this is an excellent addition to a great thread. Apologies if you have already explained but how did you build Misty? Is she scratch built or did you use a kit as a basis?

best wishes,

Alastair M

Alastair

Thanks

The basics of this model is a 1:72 steam drifter that was originally designed as a working model for radio control use from a company called Model Slipway. I have no need for that side as it was to be waterline model so I contacted them and they sold me the kit without all the internal bits and pieces - i.e. prop shaft, propeller, rudder, RC items etc. I then cut it down to a waterline model (easier said than done!!), braced internally and started from there.

The other items from the kit I used were the lower part of the superstructure (grey item - but not the bridge), funnel, main hatch and stern housing under the lifeboat. The rest, including the bridge, ended up being scratch built except the lifeboat which came from Cornwall Model Boats..

It sort of started off as a kit which was my originally intention to build as one but with a few tweaks as I went along, then I sort of kept adding bits, or changing them, or building my own....!

Not sure if this model is made anymore...doesn't appear as listed on their current website.

Once I've finished this one I have the Gramodels Clyde Puffer to build but that will be next year now.

Beautiful looking boat Kevin. Real masterly crafted and will enhance Little Muddle wonderfully.

Derek

Thanks Derek.

It certainly turned out better than even I envisaged when I first started it, there are still a few more thing to add before I'm totally happy with it.

A few more pictures from yesterdays photo shoot...

The next picture is one of my favourites as I got the lighting/shadow and reflections of the grey backing board just right.

This is it before I start messing about with 'tweaking it' and you can see the board behind giving back reflections and it standing on the cake stand which makes an ideal turntable for models.

The camera has been lined up with the waterline.

Please Kevin if it is to be moored in your harbour, make sure it is moored correctly with spring ropes etc. Nothing spoils harbour scene ,to me, is incorrectly moored boats. It would be a shame to spoil such and excellent model.

Don't worry she will be...….

This was how she was tied to the harbour wall for the BRM article.

No springs where used at this time for two good reasons

1 - I hadn't decided how tidal the basin was

and

2 - Andy Y was arriving the next day for the photo's so I had run out of time...…!!!!

Must retake that series of pictures just see how much more I have added to her, when you do it bit by bit you loose track of exactly how much extra has been added.

Now for something completely different.

I thought it was time I delve deeper into Serif Affinity and understood a few more basics.

So here is an original picture

Then I turned it B&W but selected areas I wanted in remain in colour

Turned out to be rather easy using an adjustment layer.

I can see a use where you would want to highlight an item from the background like 2322 for example

Interesting, will appear again know doubt!

Might be useful for landscape shots to increase the apparent distance of background elements by making them slightly washed out and slightly bluer than the foreground (rather than full-on monochrome).

P.S. The image of Misty at her home port is sublime! :-)

Just messing about learning the power of Affinity.

I can see applications where this sort of thing would work but if you think the previous was weird try reversing it!!!!

That I think looks strangely OK.....!

Kevin,

If you've enjoyed the boat build and knowing how frustratingly enjoyable it can be have you thought about a scratch build ?

I would imagine with the skills that you've got it would be an interesting project for the winter months if you fancy a go.

There are lots of frame plans out there that can be enlarged / reduced to suit and material are relatively inexpensive, other than maybe buying in a few of the more specialised bits.

I have built quite a few boats over the years, having jumped in at the deep end and really found it fascinating, its also quite relaxing.

I chanced upon a book detailing the restoration of the Tamar barge "Shamrock" during a visit to the NT Property at Cotehele, in the back of the book are two full detailed plans so.......challenge on !

post-20303-0-58692800-1542810140_thumb.jpg

Ironically it has sat there for about 5/6 years and needs finishing but its just to show it can be done by us railway modelling boys.

Kevin - what is the wooden screen-like structure against the siding that lies between Misty and the GWR wagon being loaded from the van near the buffer stop? I thought they may be coal bins but I am not sure, looks like the lower sections have roofs over some kind of bunker or container...?
