Whilst Bachmann are working on a 'Rheneas' that will be ripe for conversion, I figured that a 'Sir Handel' was still some years off, and the whitemetal body kit is rather cheap. It seems that the coupled wheelbase is the same as Skarloey's, so I can use elements of that. These are the basic components mocked up. Now, the Skarloey chassis block has been cut down at the front and rear, and the side bits lopped off. It looks like it's fitting together ok. RMweb Gold Corbs Posted August 30, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 30, 2017 (edited) Whilst I've had to pause 'Sir Handel' for the time being until I can get my hands on a motor (in case I need to dig more of the bodywork out), I purchased a 3D print of the Talyllyn coach No.4 in FUD from Elsbridge Productions' Shapeways shop. https://www.shapeways.com/shops/elsbridge-model-shop It's really good! The wood grain has even come out well. This is my first 3D printed carriage and convinced me never to order anything that requires detail in WSF as it's just not worth the preparation hassle compared to FUD, which is easier to sand. While FUD is excellent for bodywork detail, its inflexibility and brittleness makes fitting wheelsets in the underframes very difficult. I have temporarily mounted the coach on some wagon wheels, by trimming the ends of the axles down and gently easing them in, but feel a better (and more free-rolling) solution may be required, possibly some brass bearings. Possibly the underframe may have been better in WSF. Here's the coach in primer prior to white coat. 'Agnes', the 3D printed copy of TR No.4, has had more painting done. It runs very roughly, I've glued in a load of liquid gravity, which has helped. The paint needs a bit more tidying up, and then I can glaze it and add some suggestion of an interior. Since I had the lead out, I added some to one of the vans and the slate loads. I've also splashed out on a 3-pack kit of the Penrhyn quarrymen's coaches, to become 'Ada', 'Jane' and 'Mabel', from Narrow Planet. Very nice kits to make, satisfying! Unsurprisingly the wheels weren't turning! Following some advice, I filed down the ends of the axles and opened the holes a bit, and set about adding some weight. I used some L-section styrene to build some underframe boxes, splashed some glue in there, and poured in 'liquid gravity - small lead pellets. From outside it should hopefully look like reinforced solebars. Here they are with the paint drying I am pleased to say it works well! Skarloey can pull the train without many issues, but... The curse of Talyllyn strikes again! I've just finished reading 'Talyllyn and Corris Locomotives Vol I and II' (great read, full of anecdotes and info) as well as 'The Chronicles of Pendre Sidings' (also a good'un) and the trials and tribulations of TR No.1's long fixed wheelbase. What is happening now is that, without much in the way of springing or compensation in the trailing axle, over any undulation in the track, Skarloey's middle drivers are being lifted up and unable to make enough contact, resulting in wheelspin. I'm going to see if simply adding weight will work. I removed the ballast weights early on to fit the RC gear, but I may be able to saw off the bunker weights (it's all one piece) and just glue the tank weights in on their own. We shall see....
