markyb208
Hi All, I'd be grateful please for any information and where I might find pictures/books about what steam locomotives were running on mainline excursions and the like in the early 1990s and the type of stock used (mainly Mk1s?). I believe there was an 8F and Duke of Gloucester but that's about all I know. Regards, Mark
RMweb Premium Ian Smeeton Posted March 29, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 29, 2017 The Six Bells Junction Website will give you all sorts of info on these. You will have to check each tour individually to work out what loco powered it, but it will eventua;lly give you a picture of Steam in the 90's Regards Ian

Steamport Southport
A list of most of the locomotives that have worked on the mainline here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_98 There are a few omissions but I think that was before they had to have TOPS codes. I definitely know that Liverpool and Manchester Railway's Lion and Jinty 7298 have travelled on BR lines under their own steam. But I think this fits into the 1990s era. You just need to work out what years those engines were running on the mainline. Jason
RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted March 31, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 31, 2017 (edited) I photographed the following tours during the early 90s please excuse the shorthand for the liveries. Highlights on the stock front include the Queen of Scots observation saloon, a set of maroon MK2s a maroon 4TC set and MK1s in Green, Maroon , Choc & Cream, Blood and Custard and NSE! Edited due to word table looking fine in preview and then going pear-shaped when posted! Edited March 31, 2017 by colin penfold

RMweb Gold adb968008 Posted April 2, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) In addition to above, 4472, 5080, 4498, 6201, 5407, 35028, 60009, 5305, 44932, 48151, 2005, 3442, 75069, 80080 are numbers I recall. Popular 80's locos like 5593, 5690, 850, 7029 53809 and 34092 missed much of the 90's Mainline i recall. The "big" thing in the early 90's was the S&C (as ever) but also the North Wales Coast an express that ran in summer with Intercity MK1's, as well as Scarborough Spa expresses, Cambrian coast express and the ever present West Highland. There was also a quite hideous looking "pilkington glass" green liveried set (known as the special "k" set around), the SLOA Pullman set, WHR green / cream set. Not sure if 4930, 7819 were still Mainline. A lot more were in pre1948 liveries then. By the 1990s 7298 was running at Llangollen and Bury, not the Mainline, but it did feature at Padiham power station and with 4566 and the class 501 at Port Sunlight, There was a few one offs to..76079 ran at longsight open day, 34072 at Folkestone. Another oddity was the 2bil unit being in passenger service for an extended period from Sutton to Epsom Downs and E5001 returning to Railtour use, Sarah Siddons did a few Mainline Railtour as tooled D172 returned to the mainline.
