I had just been to a History Event, organized by the Friends of Bishopstone Station. I had hoped that the interior of the fortified upper floor of the station building would be accessible, but it was not. There was a good display of photographs, plans and documents, sourced from the Seaford and Newhaven Museums, the county archive at Falmer and local historian Kevin Gordon. Wonderful picture that brings back memories of family holidays in the early 1970s - we used to visit my Uncle (who lived in Fairways Road) and then my Gandparents (Claremont Road). Going under that bridge was the offical start of the holdays as the sea would soon be visible. I remember there used to be a motel on the other side of the bridge called the "Mercury Motor Inn" - presumably no longer there, like the Buckle Inn. Many thanks Peter, for the update. Can't get out so often these days, due to legs and eyes not co-operating with command/control. That's answered a question that occurs to me in an idle moment - the coat-hanger has been removed from the centre car - not that it would get a lot of use on the South Coast... RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted September 18, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 18, 2019 The 442 version seems to be the best so far of the 101 variations of SWR's Battleship Grey livery, just a pity said 442's have been grounded!! It would be nice to think that SWR might one day actually crack open a few cans of paint and get on with it but there seems to be a general air of 'we can't be bothered' in the TOC, even external train cleaning, one thing that SWT were very hot on seems to have been largely forgottten.
royaloak
I thing First Group got their sums wrong on the franchise bid and are having to cut costs where ever possible to try and balance the books, the ongoing DOO dispute isnt exactly helping the revenues either. Edit- Back to pictures I think as we dont want to hijack an interesting thread with <that subject>. Edited September 18, 2019 by royaloak

Actually its not hurting them that much as the DfT are compensating SWR for lost revenue. Yes you heard me right - the DfT categorise strike action as 'Force Mejure' type of thing and suspend any performance penalties, franchise payments to the DfT, etc for the duration. https://www.rmt.org.uk/news/south-western-set-to-receive-at-least-32m-in-strike-bailout/

RMweb Gold 4630 Posted October 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 SWR 450124 inside the shed at Siemens Northam Traincare facility during the open day on 28th September 2019. 'Barry' is not the destination but one of the arranged activities - having your name displayed in exchange for a donation to charity. I've no idea who Barry is. SWR 450004 having a spin on the wheel lathe - a facility that'll probably see a lot of activity over the next few weeks. SWR 450120 working 2B23, 10.33 Basingstoke to Poole, passes 450560 stabled adjacent to the wheel lathe building.
RMweb Premium Northmoor Posted October 1, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 1, 2019 Then I wonder who this was - spotted on a 450 at Waterloo one evening a couple of years ago: 5
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted October 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 I think in South West Trains time there was some fairly ‘creative’ use of the displays. I seem to recall seeing a photo of a 450 displaying ‘bed time’, or something like that.
RMweb Premium Chris116 Posted October 1, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 1, 2019 (edited) About four years ago the 10:44 from Alton that connected with the Real Ale Train on the Mid Hants Railway regularly had the display showing "RAT Special". The display used to cause a fair amount of fun at Woking and Surbiton as people wanted to know what it meant. Sadly I never took a photo of it in spite of being guard on the RAT regularly. RMweb Gold 4630 Posted October 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 (edited) A few minutes at Totton on 28th September 2019 produced... SWR 444026 as the lead unit working 1W67, 12.19 London Waterloo to Weymouth... ...with 444045 as the rear unit. Followed by 450005 leading 2B52, 13.50 Poole to Basingstoke... ...with 450120 as the rear unit. I've always thought that a layout based on Totton would offer good operating potential, whatever your chosen era. A busy mainline that over the years has seen a wide variety of traction and traffic; a reasonably compact yard; the junction for the line to Marchwood and Fawley that generates some traffic even today (although currently that's very much reduced); and if you go back several decades the short link to Eling too. Not quite as busy as its near neighbour across the causeway over the River Test at Redbridge I grant you, which I know has been modelled. Perhaps when retirement eventually beckons.... RMweb Gold 4630 Posted October 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 (edited) A few taken on 28th September 2019 from the footbridge adjacent to the busy Mount Pleasant level crossing near Siemens Northam Traincare facility, which was having an open day. SWR 444045, with 444026 approaching with 5Z54, 11.55 Brockenhurst to Guildford. This pair later picked up the diagram for 1W67 from Guildford, as I subsequently photographed them again at Totton. Southern 377159 followed closely behind with 1J35, 12.13 Southampton Central to London Victoria. Southern 377424 passing the entrance to the reception road at Northam Traincare with 1N12, 11.06 Littlehampton to Southampton Central. SWR 444022 with 1W63, 10.19 London Waterloo to Weymouth, on the Down Slow as, due to engineering work, it had been routed via Havant and Fareham... ...with 444004 as the rear unit passing Northam Traincare.
