This was my office for most of this morning. A bit cleaner this time too!

Most excellent. Had the cleaners managed to get all the dried chewing gum off the underside of the console, from the last time you captained this unit?

There was an interesting shot on a Facebook group this morning of a BR design 2-EPB unit in plain blue FYE which was actually two Driving Motor Brakes from a 4-EPB numbered 5800.  Apparently it got used as a 'tractor' unit for a while.  Must have had quite some power to weight ratio on it!!

I would be very interested to see this picture...

5800 was the '1957' type 2EPB outshopped in January 1960 to replace 5766 destroyed in the St. Johns accident in December 1957. It was disbanded in March 1964, DMBSO 61624 going to 4EPB 5352 to replace accident-damaged DMBSO 61614, and DTS 75636 used to reinstate 2EPB 5710 (disbanded so that its DTS could be used in 3R 'Tadpole' DEMU 1205) in December 1964. I have no record of 5800 (or any other EPB unit receiving the number 5800) being used as a depot tractor unit at any time in its short life, at which time it would have been in green livery. Unless modified, it was difficult to couple two EPB power cars back-to-back unless one had its centre buffer replaced by a rubbing plate normally seen on trailer vehicles, something not lightly done.

There was a two power car tractor unit, 021, which was formed in October 1986 from the DMBSOs of ex-Tyneside units 6287 (5787) and 6292 (5792) after they were withdrawn from service. By then they would have received Blue/Grey livery. 021 was withdrawn in January 1993.

This 'unit' is not to be confused with the original 2 EPB unit 5800 was was disbanded in 1964 after only a short life. The unit in the picture is a 'power unit' formed of two BR type 4 EPB MBSs back-to-back. These were from unit 5343 which had lost a trailer to IRA bomb damage near Cannon Street. 5343 ran in traffic briefly as a 3 EPB unit but this caused issues so the two MBSs were paired (as 5800) as used between 8-76 and 10-76 as a 'tractor unit' for CM&EE test trains. It was never used in passenger traffic. Both these MBSs were later split and used on other 4 EPB units with damaged cars whilst the various damaged coaches were repaired. I have never seen a photo of this later '5800' before, so this is a rare shot as it was not around for long.

Thanks for that - it's unusual for vehicles drafted into departmental service to be given a unit number in the service range, rather than the departmental (three digits starting with zero) - will look into that group :)

The “Thumper” might be off an Oxted via Lewes diagram there.  Great pic. which I am guessing was taken standing on the grit bin in Howard Place as were so many others.

A 4-LAV unit leaves Brighton in summer 1968. A DEMU is in the stabling sidings together with a green class 33.

I really like this pic - are there any more like it where this one came from?

The thumper looks like a 3H. It could also be used on a Shoreham Horsham service.

Keith

Indeed it could.  3H units worked the Brighton - Steyning - Horsham service for its last couple of years.

There may well be, 45156. The slides are all mixed up in a box. I would imagine the photographer took more.

But if so, surely not summer 1968 ?

The shadows look like a summer afternoon, would that not make it 1965 ?

Some great photos! Being a 25kv kid I have very fond memories of 4 days out of Waterloo London Bridge etc in April 1983. The sheer volume of units. 4 SUBS being my favourite. The first and last time I ever wrote every number down i could in respect of unit types seen and travelled on. Great memories.

Regards

Taken on the same day as the 4-LAV photo, the Brighton Belle approaches the station.

Interesting photo - as the BEL units rarely had a chance to be turned in service it looks as though the leading unit has been 'off piste'... they usually had the two first class cars at the London end.

Some more of the mundane in the form of Class 444 and Class 450 Desiro's at various points along the SWML. All of these shots would have been taken while waiting for something 'interesting'!
