Unusual loco's used on rail tours over the S&C

Not a railtour, but a Rugby (4 nations at the time?) special. Late 70s?

There were 3 or 4 of them heading south from Edinburgh, back to Cardiff via the S&C.

One had a pair of 26s on that got as far as Preston before being sent back on the next regular S&C Sunday diversion.

I have some dodgy pics somewhere.

Also found this on derbysulzers.com

1983

Storms on January 31st saw a late evening Glasgow - Bristol diverted over the Settle & Carlisle, being hauled by 27032 between Carlisle & Crewe.

Didn't see it though.

I know its technically not within the question but during the 90s several different classes of freight locos were used along with a class 47 for heat on service trains. These included class 25, 2x 26s, 2x 20s, 56, 58 generally with 10 coaches replacing the usual 156s.

Really ? (genuine question). I was Operations Supervisor at Appleby from 1992-94 and still quite closely involved from 94 onwards - freight locos were used on charters but I'm pretty sure (certain fof the 92-94 bit) that the only loco hauled service trains were the 'Project Leodis' top and tail 37s in the early 2000s and some WCML diversions. The 2x26s were responsible for my Railman nearly giving me a bloody heart attack.

Apart from anything else it would be pointless providing a freight loco for a service train and a 47 for hotel power, you'd just use the 47 and save the hire costs. If it's got a freight loco on the front and a RES or IC 47 on the back l'd bet money it's a charter.

Edit - talking out of my hat, see below.

It's true, they did. It was early 90s - can't remember if it was 90 or 91 - between Christmas and New Year for some service originating in Leeds. There were also some at other times originating in Carlisle. I have photos somewhere - I'll try and find them.

Well blow me, I stand corrected and educated ! Thank you!

That was just before my time, and two locos on a "End of loco-hauled services" commemoration would make sense. I'm going to have to find out the story behind that now, it has "A Kenny Harper production..." written all over it.

IIRC, it was two freight loco's per weekend, so for us at the Southern end of the S&C, it was a case of catching the morning northbound run from Leeds, bail off at Keighley, to catch the Southbound service, then spend the rest of the day doing a West Yorkshire Rover......😄😄😄

cheers,

Phil.

Is that Russ Williams of Tinsley on the 37?

I think I may have witnessed some of the above at Keighley!

But for other odd traction over the S&C, you can add all six trailer cars of 370006, dragged south from Shields to Derby on 16/17th March 1983 by a Class 40, complete with a brake van on the back - at least according to the Special Traffic Notice.

Some photos of the move passing through Leeds can be seen on apt-p.com: https://www.apt-p.com/APTGalleryColourPC.htm

There was a similar occurrence of bits of a 370 and Class 25 that "turned right" at Hellifield and headed towards Clitheroe/Blackburn.(I did see that, but it was in the early hours of the morning!)
