Class 86 Liverpool St - Cambridge line (inc Churchbury loop)

Recommended Posts

When the Class 86s were being used with Mk2 on the Liverpool Street - Cambridge line from 1987 to approximately 1989, I do have a couple of queries.

Does anyone know how often (if any) there was use of Class 86/4 on these turns? From what I can see on most photos I can find online there seemed to be a preference for Class 86/2 being sent over from Willesden each week.

How long was 86401 actually used on this line?

Were there any regular appearances from any particular 86s?

From memory, I recall a school trip in late May / early June 1988 to the swimming pool at Broxbourne. We had about 90 minutes to kill in the playground next to the line & then eat packed lunch. Those Exec liveried 86s on Mk2 in mixed NSE / Blue-Grey thundering through. Also recall an exec 86 hauling Mk2 stopping at White Hart Lane station after a Tottenham v Liverpool match in autumn 87. Happy times!

I worked at Cambridge station at the time, but to my regret didn't take many pictures of the 86s - I suppose they were something I thought would be there for a long time, not realising it would only be for a couple of years.  However I don't think 86401 ever worked on the line despite being in NSE livery.  For a short time there was a Liverpool St.-King's Lynn and return trip in the middle of the day worked by the full "East Anglian" Inter City set including appropriate loco, which made an impressive looking train but I believe caused problems at the short stations due to the length of the train and the brake van being in the wrong place at short platforms!

Hi 31A. I have seen one photo of the working that 86401 made to Cambridge in 1987 where it set a record breaking time between Liverpool St & Cambridge - https://www.flickr.com/photos/52087249@N07/14087018360/

I have not seen any other evidence beyond this of it working these turns as it was far more often seen on parcels turns on the WCML & when it was named Northampton Town when working the Cobbler.

Some pictures I have found:

I think I recall a couple of blue class 86/4 at Liverpool Street when they were first converted from 86/0 or 86/3 as at the time I had never seen an 86/4 and did not know at the time that they had been converted and numbered. That just give a fair narrow date range but I think earlier than 1987. At the back of my mind they may have been 86405 or possibly 86402 and 86420, but I can find no evidence of them in blue with these numbers so it may have been two others. Maybe they were on test.

Thanks, I had in mind that 86401 DID visit the Cambridge line once for a 'special occasion' but couldn't remember the details!
