New brand, new model - Rails Limited - LNER Dynamometer car

Just a bit of speculation on my side, with this "Rails Exclusive - Corporate Partnership" with the NRM - reading between the lines, with what is currently going off at Shildon Locomotion Models and staff redundancies, is this a move by the NRM to slowly disband the Locomotion Models side of things and farm this sort of work out to retailers who are already geared up for arrival of shipments and despatch rather than doing it in-house?

Hoping this isn't the case as theres nothing better than arriving at Locomotion Shildon, being greeted by super staff, taking a trip to the cafe for a coffee, take in the surroundings of the national collection - can't be beaten. Don't think walking into Rails and seeing your face in a cabinets reflection having the same effect.

Back on topic, the price appears to be on par with what i'd expect to pay for a model of this nature being specialist, but i'm not so sure I want to start venturing into LNER stock. Did this ever run with any BR Stock anyone know?

Hi,

No this is not the case at all. Locomotion Models and the NRM have and will continue to produce their own superb special edition models.

Rails becoming corporate members of the NRM was done to help support and promote the National Railway Museum.

D'yer know, I had a similar thought.  Over the past year or two, I think there's been a definite movement of the Locomotion strategy, away from exclusive editions and new tooling, towards issuing special editions of existing or 'already in the pipeline' tooling. Hence all the HSTs, Class 20s, Deltics etc. To my mind this suggests a move to minimise risks.

If companies such as Rails can be persuaded to take the risks associated with new tooling in exchange for 'corporate membership(*)', then this will be an ideal outcome for the newly risk-adverse Locomotion outfit.

Incidentally, I'd dearly love to be proved wrong when Locomotion announce their new models at York. A return to the 'good old days' when the NRM blew us away with DP1, City of Truro, Midland Compound etc would be very welcome. Tarted up versions of old or flawed tooling (Class 66, Class 20, Dean Goods etc) doesn't really cut it, IMO.

Fingers crossed!

Adrian

* Whatever that is. How does one become a member, corporate or otherwise, of a national museum? If they were members of the FNRM or similar, or corporate sponsors/supporters of the NRM, either would make sense, but to be a member of an institution that has no membership seems nonsensical.

Not until the end of the year at earliest,I am informed. I agree we have a deluge of goodies arriving at the moment .We are all feeling the strain...hard to bear isn't it ? :jester:

Indeed very hard. If they make release late, first quarter of 2018 at the earliest, that would help. To come this year I have a 4- TC, 2 Bullied diesels, 1 remaining Merchant Navy (on top of 2 I just received), 2 H. Class Secr, 1 H Atlantic, 1 Golden Arrow 71, 3 B4s, 1 Ivatt Duchess, 1 L&B loco and numerous sound chips!

I am tempted to get a Golden Arrow set, but must wait....

Edit: plus £500 worth of birdcages to come too...

Is anyone else having trouble getting on to the Rails website?

Hi, I have checked the site and it seems to be down to the sheer amount of traffic currently on the site. Please bear with us and it should be back to full strength shortly.

I was planning on selling my soul to Satan for one, but then the website came back on and I decided not to... I sell it instead for a GWR (ex-Port Talbot) 813...!! :P

Order officially placed for Version I :)

I never expected to see this announced. But does it actually work and measure the performance of our model locos?

Only joking!

US company Walthers did produce an RTR HO-scale model of an US prototype dynamometer car that could measure the performance of model locos. so it isn't actually a joke at all. Now how accurate the measurement was, and what you could usefully do with the information once you had it, that's another question.

Station Road Steam do one for those of us in the bigger sizes too...

Trouble is the site keeps crashing, and with a part complete order via pay pal pending, due to a "time out" and I deliberately ordered in a quiet early morning time, with the only recourse to wait till they are open and phone Rails to see what is going on.

Stephen

Edit......Further efforts to place the order failed again, due I suppose to site volume, but worryingly with a 9/10 th completed purchase, at least not recoded yet on Pay Pal, so looks like another wait to confirm the order., and all of this with a deposit involved, which should mean a better service.

At least it indicates successful pre delivery sales for Rails

Stephen

I believe it was E902502/DE902502 but have been trying without avail to find a pic in say late 50's as I'd like one for that era.

Vintage Carriages Trust's entry: http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=910

Built 1906, retired 1951, numbers: 3591 (NER), 23591 (LNER), DE902502 (BR)

Well ..all change... to the 1948 version which the website accepted ( still site out on the Mallard run version ). Well I have not got a Mallard anyway, so the Loco exchange version will do fine. I wonder if the Dyno wheel will be able to turn in contact with the rail, it was raised and lowered as required in tests

An interesting question. Looking at the 3D print, it seems to be set in the scale position, i.e. farther out than the running wheels. That could be just because the running wheels  have moved to one side due to gravity.

Humph! I thought that Hornby had the monopoly on flangeless wheels. :D

A challenge for Rapido to raise and lower using a DCC controlled servo!
