On Monday evening, shortly before Sils station in Domleschg, a train composition of the RhB Rhaetian Railway collided with several stone blocks. Three train carriages derailed.

The train, which was carrying 27 passengers, was travelling from Tiefencastel towards Thusis station shortly after 7.30 pm. Shortly before Sils i.D. station, the composition collided with stone blocks of several hundred kilos, which lay on the tracks as a result of a rock fall. The control car and two passenger cars were lifted off the tracks by the collision with the boulders and came to a halt after another collision with a catenary mast. The train driver was moderately injured and was taken to the hospital in Thusis with the rescue of Mittelbünden. A train attendant, a catering staff member as well as the 27 passengers and two dogs were evacuated unharmed by the emergency services. Two ambulance teams from the Mittelbünden rescue team, twelve rescue personnel from the Thusis fire brigade, an employee of the Office for Nature and Environment and five specialists from the Railcenter of the RhB were on duty. Together with the Swiss Safety Investigation Office (SUST), the cantonal police and the public prosecutor's office in Graubünden are investigating the cause of the accident.

I wonder which Allegra that was?

It’s an Albula set driving trailer so it could be an Allegra or 4/4iii on the rear, you can just see the 5 series number amongst the snow. Apart from the windscreen it looks to have held up well structurally. Having seen a unit here that got breeze blocked through the windscreen glass dust in the eyes plus the impact injuries from being thrown against the desk are highly likely. I have my fingers crossed that moderate means bruised and cuts.

Thanks for the additional photos. Overall, it seems to have survived pretty well. I did not know the RhB had sensors placed in various locations to warn of a rock fall or avalanche. Good idea in that kind of terrain.

Agree with your hopes on "moderate".

From one of the other websites linked it identified it as Alvra set 5705 with matching driving trailer 57805.

As a consequence, two "scratch" sets of stock on the Albula today - both are Allegra powered push-pull sets:

One thing I noted from the second link of photos was the corridor connection was broken even with a minor lateral separation, I wonder if that’s being investigated. The sets are still in use on the webcam today but I wonder why two sets are replaced with steuerwagen and EW1’s?

They have 6 Alvra sets in total and believe it or not the schedule needs 6 sets to run!

Journey time is just over 2 hours, so in the middle of an hour there will be 4 trains en-route, plus one sat at Chur and another at St Moritz.

So one scratch set in use I think must be fairly common every time one needs maintaining (there was one out and about during the week we were there.) - this will mean 2 sets out if one is having its normal maintainance cycle.

(Downside of long fixed formation trains, at least if you haven't got spares!)

Thank you. That is a superb bit of video - albeit it now seems strange to us - there is not much "social distancing" on view?

I know the following is not now news, but I have only seen one rotary plogh working and that was in January 2011 on the Bernina line - see below. That was quite something, but there was nothing like the depth of snow to shift as there was on the DFB line last Friday!!

Just as i've not seen it mentioned yet, from the webcam Capricorn's now seem to be the default type on the Chur-centric commuter runs, the 4 car Allegra's which used to run those now seem to be showing up on some of the Scuol-Pontresina diagrams, with a bike coach and push pull trailer for company.

That is correct. Capricorns are now diagrammed for:

Landquart - Klosters - Davos - Filisur

Landquart - Klosters - St Moritz

Chur S-Bahn

The 4-car Allegras are moved from Chur S Bahn to Scuol - Pontresina

For the sake of completeness, locos operate:

Glacier Express workings: GE4/4II

Alvra Albula workings that are not Allegra: Ge4/4III (occasional Ge4/4II)

Albula non Alvra fil ins: usually Ge4/4II

Disentis - Scuol: Ge4/4II

Vereina tunnel car shuttles: Ge4/4III

Freight: GE4/4II, Ge4/4III

Albula new tunnel service freight: Ge4/4I (yes, still!)

Ilanz fill in: often Ge4/4I

Heritage Davos - Filisur: Croc unless there is a mech problem
