This looks rather good. Really like the description of the construction of the signal box. I'm contemplating building something similar for my own project.

I'm looking forward to the finished article.

Do you scribe the planking in prior to cutting out?

Rob.

Yes. Marking out first in pencil, then scribing the planking. The hard part is cutting the windows to make them square and clean. Not 100% happy with this attempt so I may have another try. It's fairly quick to this stage for the wooden planking, although scribing the bricks is a bit tedious.

Managed a bit more time today on the signal box.

I decided to recut the outside and use the first attempt as the interior. Next up the tricky bit as you need to make a v shaped cut in the card without going all the way through. You can then bend it up into a box and glue it with pva. I then added the corner bracing from thin paper and painted in the dark stone colour.

Window frames are etched brass from Ambis Engineering picked up at Expo EM yesterday, painted, glazed and fixed with Evo stik. The interior is pretty basic with Peco lever frame, a table and a chair.

I may decide to add lighting as you won't see much when the roof is on. Next up is the plinth, roof and guttering, plus a few notices, nameboard and maybe the signalman inside looking out the window by the door.

Almost finished. Just needs the name board and the steps to complete.

Light is provided by a small LED which will run from a 12v supply through a small resistor, value yet to be decided.

The roof was painted in Humbrol no 27 with a bit of no 79 for variety. The station master come signal man peers out though the window.

Started to add the curved back scene. This is a bit experimental so not 100% sure it will work. Base is polystyrene cut with a hot wire, glued with pva. The skin is photo paper and finally a roller blind material is added. I shall then paint a sky colour with a roller before adding some clouds and countryside. Have to wait and see how it turns out.

Apologies if the first photos are a bit of a funny camera angle.

Whilst the back scene is drying out and the bubbles are disappearing I thought it would be good to post another couple of pics of the yard hut. The building is a model of that at Marlborough on the old MSWJR and has once again been built in card, scribed and painted. I still need to finish the roof, add the chimney, guttering etc.

Thanks to a suggestion on this forum and to speed up/improve my model making I have now invested in a silhouette cutter. It's first job was cutting the roof slates for the yard hut. So much easier than cutting by hand and I am looking forward to how it can help for window frames etc. To give an idea of scale the slots between the slates are 0.25mm.

It came from CPL (Creative Printers of London). Excellent service and very quick turnaround. It is a Silhouette Cameo model, and was very easy to set up. I am fortunate to have an Autocad programme to make the files for cutting which are then imported as a .dxf file. The machine does come with its own drawing software but not tried this.

Next up I will make some window masks for a coach that is already glazed so I can paint in the drop lights. I will then move on to a thinker card and the shell for the hut that will cover the well and steam pump for the water tower. So far very pleased with the results.

Is my maths faulty or does that mean 19mm between slates at full size?

I suspect a single knife cut would be sufficient.

Your maths is 100% correct. I wanted enough gaps to stop it filling up with paint but probably could have done a bit smaller.

The hut has now been completed and weathered so here are a few more pics. It's amazing what the photos show up (such as the wonky window bar) but overall the result is something I am happy with.

The handling area at the base will be cut off when the building is ready to be installed on the layout, leaving just 3mm to sit into the foam track base.

Station building coming along nicely. Based on that at Vowchurch with demensions from a drawing of a similar building at Lydney Junction, it is built with the same techniques as the signal box. Not sure how best to do the windows yet and the plan is to have the doors open to the booking hall so you can see inside. That will be the only part of the building with a fully detailed interior, although the ladies waiting room may have some interior detail.

May I ask how you do your scribing so perfectly? It's a work of art

Look closely and there are a few errors. I mark in pencil in this case 2.5mm plank width, only small marks outside the finished area. Then scribe with a steel rule using the scriber you can see the tip of in a previous post. It takes concentration but not very long to do.

Brilliant! Certainly must be therapeutic too

Could you have also cut out the outline of the walls and the door and window apertures with the Cameo cutter?

Is it the Silhouette Cameo 3 by the way?
