Being the end of a branch line calls for a couple of buffer stops. These have been made as compact as possible to give the maximum amount of space for the runaround loop. They are made from offcuts of rail, copper clad and soldered up. One complete, one more to go. Should be ok when painted and weathered.

The basis for the cattle dock is from card glued with PVA. It holds 2 wagons. I need to decide the best surface texture to use before adding the fencing. The ramps are likely too be a mix of ash and grass and I still need to work out how best to blend into the backscene.

More work on the cattle dock. Stone embossed plasticard has been added for the base same as used on the bridge and the station platform when I get to that item. A card overlay has also been added to the deck embossed to represent the edging stones with smaller insets for the main dock. The ramp will be a mixture of dirt, ash and grass. The fencing is laser cut from Ancorton Models glued with pva. Finally some rope to keep the gates closed when not is use. It's turned out a bit bigger than those on the original line but then it gives me an excuse to run plenty of cattle wagons and even the odd horse box, in this case an ex Taff Vale one from a London Road Models etched brass kit. Next up some painting and weathering, and add some steps at this end to the small gate.

Hi there PUASHP, thanks for posting brilliant, modelling in the process of development, its great seeing what clever modellers do to make layouts look truly prototypical.

As a returnee septuagenarian, your photo posted @ 15.37 on 11/11 confused me somewhat: was the gate on the end facing the viewer:-

  • A kamikaze means of escape for livestock allergic to railway vans?
  • The unfortunate lack of the usual materials to build the cattle dock, led the builders to use materials requisitioned from a neighbouring farmer?
  • Or a deliberate, but risky, evacuation gate for a soon to be gored, railway staff dealing with frisky cattle.

I’ll get my coat!

The idea for the gate is that it will lead to some steps down to rail level then a barrow crossing the tracks to the station platform. The plan is to keep the gate locked when cattle are in the pen. The wooden railing is similar to that used on the cattle pens on the chosen line, however the pen is a bit bigger.

Glad you like what you've seen so far and it's all make belief and a bit of fun anyway so perhaps the cattle will escape from the pen.

It's looking great – your back scene is one of the best I've ever seen. The sky is particularly well done. Your architectural modelling and the painting of the surfaces is really superb and very inspiring.

May I ask why you chose grass for the ramp to the cattle pen – is that a prototypical feature you've noted?

Thanks for the comments on the backscene. It is not 100% complete but I'm happy so far.

My main source of reference for this model is the book on the Golden Valley Railway and this shows a grass ramp to the cattle dock so I went for that. The finished model will be a mix of various stations and details on long the line. The backscene is painted based on actual views from along the line, courtesy of modern day Google Earth.

In a bit of time off from building the layout scenery and buildings, thoughts turned to stock required for the layout. Coaching stock will be mainly of the 4 wheel variety and as such I have a number of Ratio kits in build or being modified for the layout. First to complete is a composite to diagram U4.

Work includes adding an interior, no passengers travelling on the train today I'm afraid, wire grab rails on the coach ends, gas light piping, simulated brake gear and painting in 1923 livery. It is planned to have a set of 3 for the passenger, and 2 for the mixed

Second 4 wheeler completed. This time in an all over dark chocolate lake colour dating back to 1918 and looking a bit tatty by the time of our model in the late 1920's, early 1930's. This was a second hand kit painted, lined and weathered. The coaches sport the small destination boards used on some branch trains around this period. This mixed goods represents the longest train the loop will take.
